Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) Storytelling method in improving the speaking skills of physical education students. The study employs a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group that received instruction using the TPR Storytelling method and a control group that followed a traditional teaching approach. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the students’ speaking abilities, along with observations and interviews to gain qualitative insights into the learning process. The findings reveal that students in the experimental group demonstrated a significant improvement in their speaking skills compared to those in the control group. The TPR Storytelling method was found to be particularly effective in engaging students and promoting active participation, which led to enhanced vocabulary usage, better sentence construction, and increased confidence in speaking. The qualitative data supported these results, showing that students were more motivated and showed a higher level of enthusiasm towards learning English through storytelling. This research highlights the potential of the TPR Storytelling method as a valuable tool in language teaching, especially for students in non-language disciplines such as physical education. The study recommends that educators consider incorporating this method into their teaching practices to foster more dynamic and interactive language learning environments

Abstract

The strategy for developing Khombouw bark craft products in Asei Village, Jayapura Regency, has not yet been optimized to become an interactive learning medium for forming early childhood interest in learning and building character education based on local Papuan wisdom. This research explores the mechanical properties by testing the bending strength of Khombouw bark material as a primary material for making character dolls for Papuan children. This research uses a Research and Development (R&D) development approach, including existing, archetype, and experimental studies. The process of assembling the prototype doll from Khombouw bark uses basic patterns with manual sewing techniques and is reinforced with composite materials to give a handmade impression. The results of this research show that natural fiber in the form of bark from the Khombouw tree has a high level of elasticity that can be applied in the design of volumetric product construction. Visualization of educational dolls using natural colors (wood brown or reddish brown) produced from the surface of Khombouw bark material, which is displayed on child figures by adapting the biological characteristics of Papuans (curly hair), as well as traditional clothing such as crowns, noken and tassels to build Papuan cultural identity.

Abstract

Essential for EFL students are basic reading skills, including letter recognition, word decoding, and comprehension of phrases. Learners struggle with more difficult materials and participate actively in class discussions without honing these abilities. This study aims to investigate EFL students’ needs analysis of basic reading instruction. This descriptive qualitative research design was used with the 2nd semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Universitas Cenderawasih as the subjects of this research, using in-depth interviews and non-participant observation as data collection tools, and having 19 students as the respondents. Based on the interviews with 19 EFL students, most of them find textbook-based reading materials repetitious and devoid of visual aids, with culture, education, health, and sport. They were interesting, relevant materials that they enjoyed more. Particularly in science and academic writing, students find difficulty with longer passages, foreign vocabulary, and challenging books. They said they prefer digital resources to help understanding, including interactive exercises, audiobooks, and vocabulary lists. These findings underline the importance of level-appropriate, interesting reading materials as well as the usage of multimedia tools to assist different learning requirements. This study concludes that EFL students find challenges with standard, textbook-based reading materials, which emphasize the need for analysis for more relevant, interactive, and visually accompanied content to better fit their interests and improve reading comprehension and enthusiasm. The study recommends utilizing various reading materials, contextualized subjects, and needs-based scaffolding to improve engagement and understanding in curriculum development. EFL programmes can help learners improve their language skills.

Abstract

The integration of instant messaging services into educational settings has become increasingly prevalent, providing unique opportunities for enhanced communication and learning. This study aimed to examine the viewpoints of educators and students regarding the use of instant messaging services, such as WhatsApp, in their translation education and instruction. The study employed a qualitative research approach, specifically content analysis, to examine the utterances of two translation lecturers and fifteen ESP students. The results revealed that participants unanimously agreed that instant messaging services facilitated their teaching and learning of translation by using consistent terminology and rephrasing complex tasks to provide guidance throughout the chat. This approach enriched the translation understanding of ESP students. The study suggests using one consistent term to refer to the translation process throughout the text. In conclusion, chatting applications like WhatsApp are powerful and efficient communication tools that can facilitate an engaging, authentic, and meaningful learning experience when effectively included in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms for online translation interactions.

Abstract

This study aimed at determining whether or not the knowledge, educational level, perception, and attitude of the pesantren students affect the implementation of the multilingual simultaneous-sequential model (MSSM). This research employed quantitative research using a survey design. The sample of the study consisted of 100 students of three pesantren schools in the city of Makassar (Pesantren Modern IMMIM, Pondok Madinah, and Pesantren Darul Arqam Muhammadiyah Gombara). The data were collected through the questionnaire and be analyzed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS program. The results found that the knowledge, level of education, perception, and attitude of pesantren students collectively had a positive impact on the MSSM. However, these perceptions have no significant effect on the MSSM implementation partially. The results of this study contributed to developing further multilingual teaching and learning material such as syllabus, lesson plan, and course book for pesantren students in Indonesia, especially in Makassar.

Abstract

Pedagogical competency is essential in influencing the growth of EFL students within the educational context. This research aims to analyze the development of EFL students' communicative competence based on technological knowledge in higher education. This research used a descriptive qualitative research method. The numbers of respondents of this study were twenty EFL students by using stratified sample technique from ninety EFL students. The results of the study show what contexts students use to voice their opinions, ranging from talks about general topics (education policy, movies, everyday events) to talks about organizations, lecturing, in-class presentations, public presentations, and the final category, using media technologies (chats, recordings, and video recordings). The students reported feeling comfortable and motivated to engage with media technology. Pedagogical technologies might support EFL students in enhancing their communicative competence. Pedagogical technologies have the potential to motivate students to adopt a self-directed learning style and collaborate to enhance their communicative competence by providing them with access to a learning environment outside of the traditional classroom.
