Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture technology continues to advance in line with global commitments to emission reduction. Glycerol, an abundant by-product of the biodiesel industry, has potential as an alternative absorbent due to its low cost, biodegradability, and low vapor pressure. This review aims to analyze the performance of glycerol-based CO₂ capture by evaluating the effects of temperature, pressure, gas flow rate, and solution concentration on process efficiency, as well as identifying research gaps for further development. In general, increasing operating parameters enhances the mass transfer coefficient and CO₂ capture efficiency up to an optimum limit, beyond which performance declines. The addition of solvents such as water and monoethanolamine (MEA) to glycerol has been shown to improve capture efficiency from 27.31% to 64.33%, although it may lead to the formation of by-products. Future work requires further laboratory-scale experimental studies, such as the use of bubble column reactors to enhance gas–liquid contact, in order to achieve optimal process conditions and maximize glycerol carbonate yield.

Abstract

The recalcitrant structure of lignocellulosic biomass necessitates efficient pretreatment strategies to enhance enzymatic saccharification for biofuel production. This study investigates a synergistic approach combining ultrasound irradiation with magnetic Fe₃O₄ for pretreating rice straw. A 2² factorial experimental design was employed to systematically evaluate the individual and combined effects of ultrasound (300 W, 30 min) and Fe₃O₄ addition (1.5 wt%). The combined treatment exhibited a pronounced synergistic effect, achieving 68.3% delignification and reducing the crystallinity index from 52.4% to 31.2%. These structural modifications resulted in a saccharification yield of 72.5%, which was significantly higher than the theoretical additive yield of 48.7% (raw: 18.5%, Fe₃O₄-only: 26.0%, ultrasound-only: 41.2%). SEM observations revealed extensive surface erosion, pore formation, and microfibril exposure after the combined pretreatment, while FTIR analysis confirmed substantial lignin removal. Furthermore, magnetic Fe₃O₄ demonstrated excellent magnetic separability, with a recovery efficiency higher than 95%, and maintained pretreatment performance over five reuse cycles with < 8% reduction in efficacy. Overall, this work presents a green, efficient, and economically promising pretreatment strategy based on synergistic ultrasound–magnetic Fe₃O₄ interactions, offering an effective pathway for enhancing lignocellulosic biomass saccharification and supporting the development of sustainable biorefinery processes.

Abstract

This community service program aims to optimize the use of Carica (Carica pubescens) waste into liquid organic fertilizer through bioconversion techniques, while simultaneously increasing the capacity of MSMEs and farmer groups in Kejajar District, Wonosobo. Activities include outreach, training, and mentoring in the production of liquid organic fertilizer on a household scale using simple technology based on decomposer microbes. The results of the community service show an increase in partners' knowledge and skills in Carica waste fermentation techniques, as well as in the production of liquid organic fertilizer with physical, chemical, and microbiological properties suitable for organic farming. Analysis shows decrease in pH and color changes, a distinctive fermentation odor, and increases in nutrient content (N, P, K), along with variations in substrate concentration. In addition, participants received mentoring on digital marketing strategies to increase the product's economic value. This program contributes to reducing Carica industrial waste, providing alternative organic fertilizers, and empowering local communities to improve welfare based on regional potential.

Abstract

The increasing demand for sustainable agriculture has accelerated the development of biopesticides as environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic pesticides. However, their application remains constrained by poor stability, low solubility, rapid degradation, and inconsistent field performance. This review aims to evaluate the relationship between bioactive compound production methods and appropriate encapsulation techniques, focusing on fermentation- and extraction-derived biopesticides. A comparative analysis of recent literature was conducted to assess the compatibility of fermentation and extraction processes with coacervation and nanoemulsion encapsulation technologies. The analysis shows that fermentation-derived bioactive compounds, including microbial spores and protein toxins, are best protected through coacervation, which enhances environmental stability and enables controlled release. Conversely, extraction-derived bioactive compounds, such as essential oils, terpenoids, and phenolics, are more effectively formulated using nanoemulsions, improving solubility, dispersion, bioavailability, and biological efficacy while reducing application rates. Matching bioactive production methods with suitable encapsulation strategies significantly enhances formulation stability, active ingredient delivery, and pest control performance. This integrated approach provides a practical framework for developing effective, stable, and commercially viable biopesticides to support sustainable agricultural systems. This review, based on a comparative analysis of recent studies, highlights that fermentation-derived bioactives are more compatible with coacervation systems, whereas extraction-derived bioactives are better suited for nanoemulsion formulations. The findings emphasise that aligning the characteristics of bioactive sources with suitable encapsulation techniques is crucial for improving stability, active ingredient loading, and pest control performance. This integrated approach provides a strategic framework for designing effective, stable, and commercially viable biopesticide formulations that support sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Rice bran, a byproduct of milling rice, has 60% nutritional content and potential for processing into higher-selling goods like rice bran oil (RBO). Degumming is the first stage of refining crude oil. This research aims to remove phospholipids in crude rice bran oil (CRBO) by optimizing acid degumming. Three variables were optimized in this study using Design Expert v13's response surface methodology (RSM) employing central composite design (CCD) experimental design: the amount of phosphoric acid (0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 %w/w), the degumming temperature (50, 70, and 90 C), and the degumming time (20, 30, 40 minutes). The experimental values and predicted results did not correlate well with percentages (%) of error, with more than 50% occurring in 4 of 19 runs. The model's p-value of 0.4939 ( 0.05) is non-significant, with the coefficient determination, R2 being 0.5026. Optimization with desirability value ( 0.5) results showed a phospholipid removal response of 40.479% under conditions of adding 0.1%w/w phosphoric acid, temperature of 83.21 C, and degumming time of 40 minutes, which were determined by Derringers methodology..
