Abstract

The film Cruella is a comedy-crime film directed by Craig Gillespie in 2021. This film tells the story of a beautiful and creative woman named Estella who dreams of becoming a designer. On a circuitous journey, Estella met a famous designer of that time named Baroness von Hellman. They eventually achieved very good cooperation, until it reached a point where they were enemies with each other. The focus of this research is Baroness von Hellman's personality as the antagonist in the film. Researchers are interested in studying the representation of Baroness von Hellman's dark personality and how this personality can dominate her. This research uses the dark triad personality theory to examine Baroness von Hellman's actions which represent her dark personality. In the dark triad of personality, there are three categories of behavior that reflect a dark personality, namely Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data sourced from the film Cruella. Abstract

Loss is a universal experience, yet its interpretation varies across cultures. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of the meaning of loss in Elizabeth Bishop’s poem “One Art” (1976) and Kurniawan Junaedhie’s poem “Tak Ada Yang Hilang” (2009) using Jacques Derrida’s perspective of deconstruction. This study explores how these poems reflect and deconstruct the meaning of loss through logocentrism, binary opposition, and difference. The findings indicate that while Bishop presents loss as an art to be mastered, reflecting Western pragmatism and individualism, Junaedhie portrays loss as a transformation rather than an absence, rooted in Eastern perspectives on continuity and presence. This research contributes to the field of comparative literature and poetry analysis by highlighting the cultural and philosophical dimensions of loss.

Abstract

Class struggle emerges due to the gap between two conflicting classes: the bourgeoisie (capital owners) and the proletariat (workers). The oppression and unjust distribution of rights lead the working class to fight for equality. This condition has been immortalized in poetry by poets as a reflection of social realities. This research aims to examine the application of Marxist theory in literature by analyzing class struggle in Ralph Hosea Chaplin’s poems, "The Commonwealth of Toil," "Sabotage," and "Solidarity Forever" (1917). The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using Marxist theory to analyze the representation of power relations and the struggle of the exploited class. The findings reveal that power is in the hands of the bourgeoisie, who exploit and oppress the proletariat without granting their rights. Moreover, the proletariat responds with resistance, starting from ideological awareness to verbal and physical confrontation against the bourgeoisie.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the portrayal of habitus and symbolic violence in the character of Vic Van Allen in the film Deep Water (2022), directed by Adrian Lyne. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, analyzing the film's narrative and semiotics to identify key scenes, dialogues, and non-verbal expressions that reflect the concepts of habitus and symbolic violence. The findings of this study indicate that Vic Van Allen's habitus is shaped by the accumulation of economic capital and a strong socio-cultural class, making him a calm and manipulative individual with significant control over his environment. This study highlights that symbolic violence, although invisible, has a profoundly destructive impact on victims and can perpetuate power imbalances in interpersonal relationships among the elite. Keywords: Habitus, Symbolic Violance, Vic Van Allen

Abstract

To a certain extent, a structural study is good enough to comprehend the very substance of a literary work. Given the above thesis, the researcher attempted to conduct a structural research on Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry (ROTHMC), an African-American novel, using actantial and functional structure analysis. This study aimed at comprehending the basic framework of the story that leads to the revelation of the plot and relations between characters, which indicated the African-American protagonist’s struggle to challenge white supremacy. Method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. Results found that the protagonist was David Logan, an African-American independent farmer that had an ambition to free African-American community from white people’s repressions. It was also found that the ambition and dream of David Logan about African-American freedom and independence and his awareness on the repression toward African-American people (Sender) has made him struggled to make African-American or African-American become a free race with dignity in the United States, where land and other things at the time was dominated by White people. Meanwhile, the functional analysis showed the plot structure of ROTHMC, which was centered on the struggles of David Logan and the family to challenge white supremacy.

Abstract

Literary psychological scholars see psychological problems faced by a fictional character in a literary work as a reflection of the author’s awareness of similar phenomena that happen to a real person in real life. It becomes a trigger to why this research is conducted. This research aims to analyze the psychological condition of Greg Heffley, the protagonist in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2007), in his early teenage year. The theory used in this research is Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. This research method is qualitative descriptive, where data is analyzed and presented in the discussion in detailed descriptions. Meanwhile, the primary data is text in the novel. The results show that Greg Heffley, as the protagonist, experiences role confusion due to the transition from childhood to teenage. He does not adapt well with his new environment. The situation is worsened by his unsupportive best friend, who still acts like a child when interacting with him. It is also found that Greg Heffley, at this stage, begins to be aware of his sexual and occupational identity. It is concluded that Greg Heffley finds it challenging and difficult to migrate from childhood to teenage with all his situation.

Abstract

People leaving their countries to become permanent residents of other countries and/or change their nationaliites are often seen unpatriotic and having not nationalistic spirits. However, facts show that many of them still show nationalism towards their homelands. This kind of nationalism is called long distance nationalism. Considering literature as a mirror of society, such an issue is found in several literary works. This study was conducted on Rojak (an Indonesian novel) and Bricklane (and English novel), in which diaspora characters were found. The research aimed at finding out if long-distance nationalistic spirits could be found, and how these characters shared their views on their homelands. Method used was comparative literary studies with eclectic approach (combination of structural and postcolonial approaches). Results showed that such diaspora figures, with different personalities and migration motives, represent different cultural identities. Besides, the differences of the migration motives also made impacts on their long distance nationalisms. It is concluded that we cannot generalize diaspora peoples qualities of long distance nationalism for they deal with various aspects, including ambivalences to certain extents.
