Abstract

Penutur bahasa mempunyai hakikat kreatif dan inovatif. Maka dalam pemroduksian bahasa, penutur dapat memodifikasi konstruksi lingual sedemikian rupa demi kepentingan penyampaian informasi atau pesan kepada lawan tutur. Karena bahasa-bahasa di dunia mempunyai karakteristiknya masing-masing, maka fenomena pengemasan informasi menarik untuk diamati. Oleh sebab itu, makalah ini mengulas perihal pengemasan informasi dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Di samping itu, tulisan ini berusaha memerikan faktor-faktor internal bahasa penyebab persamaan dan perbedaan pengemasan informasi di antara kedua bahasa tersebut.

Abstract

To achieve the goal of using language, the speaker of a language is structuring the linguistic construction as effective as possible. Moreover, he is able to modify the linguistic construction based on the prominence of the information. By so doing, language will meet its function, serving as the tool of delivering message to the interlocutor. However, there are many ways to mark the important information, such as supra-segmental, morphological, and syntactic ways. Syntactic marking of information packaging is called syntactic choice. Thus, this paper aims at describing the ways to package important information in English as one of widely spoken languages worldwide. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from realiable sources, written or spoken by native speakers. From the analysis, it is evident that English has several ways of structuring prominent information and resulting in some noncanonical constructions, namely topicalization, dislocation, cleft, existential, and so forth.

Abstract

Verb is one of the most important word classes in linguistic construction due to its prominent role and dynamic nature. Interestingly, the use of verbs in different linguistic contexts might be various because the context can limit or allow certain verbs to occur more frequently than other verbs. It is compelling to study further the use of verbs in a particular linguistic context. This paper thus aims at examining the use of verbs in news section in The Jakarta Post to figure out the frequency of verbs and how it relates to the characteristics of news text. This study compiled The Jakarta Post corpus comprising news articles belong to the category of hard news from October to December 2018 with total size of 21.682 words. The verb types used in this study refer to those compiled by Scheibmann (combining Halliday’s verb taxonomy and Dixon’s verb types). Based on the analysis, it is obvious that verbal type is the most frequent verb type, followed by material and existential. As for the least frequent ones, there are corporeal and perception/relational types. It is plausible that verbal type occupies the most frequent position because the nature of news text is to deliver information and thus it needs to use verbal verbs quite often. Likewise, material verb is frequent because it states concrete action and existential verb denotes existence; both are vital in constructing news text. Meanwhile, corporeal and perception/relational types are least frequent because corporeal deals with bodily gestures actions and perception/relational shows subjectivity. Both verb types are rather insignificant concepts in news writing. Based on the results of analysis, it is obvious that there is a firm relation between frequency of verbs used in news text and the characteristics of the text: linguistic units that are not in accordance with the function of the text are not really needed and thus infrequently used.

Abstract

Teachers play a very important role in the teaching and learning process. They should utilize effective strategies that are included in classroom management. In this digital era, the teachers should adjust their methods in delivering or explaining the materials for the students. One of the technology is the web. The aim of this study is to investigate the teacher’s perceptions of using the web to enhance students’ English speaking skills. This study was under phenomenological qualitative research and characterized by an interdisciplinary approach, especially education and technology. The direct personal interview was utilized to obtain the information from the teacher. The survey encompasses twelve questions that become different categories and was done in eight grades of class B in SMP Negeri 3 Pleret. The results showed that teaching speaking using the web can effectively enhance the students’ English speaking skills and the students give positive reactions regarding this method.

Abstract

Information can be packaged based on the need of the speaker and best described in information structure. The selection of a certain package in using language is not aimless. There is special intention owned by the speaker. Left-dislocation is recognized as one of the way to package the information. Due to its uncommon use, left-dislocation construction is a non-canonical way to arrange the information flow. This paper will attempt to portray left-dislocation in bahasa Indonesia based on syntactic view and a slight analysis based on discourse view. The portrayal will deal with kinds of left-dislocation, the relationship of antecedant -- pronoun and the discourse function of left-dislocation.

Abstract

Some languages have its universal features such as subject, object, and copula. However, each language has its specific features regarding the universal ones, including in English. There are some linguistic elements similar to subject, object, and copula in English for they inherit their basic characteristics. Those elements are called quasi- and specific in English. Therefore, this paper will attempt to describe the causes and the processes of the emergence of those quasi elements. By doing so, the comprehensive analysis of quasi- will be obtained.

Abstract

Verb is considered as the central element in a linguistic construction, including in English. Chafe (1970:96) stated that verb determines the arguments. It is the semantic aspect of the verb that selects the arguments in the construction. However, a single verb can possibly have different semantic aspect in different condition. It will, then, influence the valence of the verb and definitely the argument of the verb. This change is so-called alternation. This also happens in English. One of the examples is the change of lexical verb into linking verb. Therefore, this paper attempts to describe the semantic change of lexical verb into linking verb.

Abstract

Writing is the activity of arranging and organizing ideas that need some logical connectors to make the ideas cohesively structured. There are several plausible means for cohesiveness, including linking adverbials (LAs). This study examines the LA categories found in EFL students’ academic essays and explores how EL students use them. The data were collected from students’ essays compiled as a learner corpus, Learner Corpus of Academic Writing, comprising 52,404 words. The present study employed LancsBox as the corpus tool and The Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays as the control corpus to assist the analysis. The study results show that all primary categories of LAs are found in the corpus. However, the subcategory transition to another topic is absent from the corpus. In the frequency of use, causal resultative LAs outnumber all other categories, followed by additive and adversative LAs. As for the least frequent LAs, the study identified sequential types. In comparison to the native writer corpus, it is found that there are shared similarities, including the categories and the subcategories of LAs found in both corpora. Regarding the frequency of use, the most frequent types are relatively similar with different positions, namely causal resultative and additive LAs, while the least frequent type is sequential. These results suggest more considerations in designing writing materials, especially in regard to transition markers belonging to the sequential category.

Abstract

Lexical bundles are functional units that are essential to building texts. However, lexical bundles vary due to some aspects, e.g., nativity, professionalism, text genre, etc. This study explored functional categories of lexical bundles in EFL written production, i.e., argumentative essays, focusing on 3-, 4-, and 5-word sequences employed by English major students in Indonesia. The data were taken from a learner corpus comprising 169 argumentative essays with 87.939 tokens. The lexical bundles were identified by using computerized and manual procedures. The identified bundles were then classified into functional categories and subcategories by Hyland. The results show that all functional categories were identified in the learner corpus proving the importance of those functions in students’ essays. Regarding the distribution, research-oriented bundles are the most frequent bundles in the corpus, while text-oriented bundles are the least frequent. Although all functional categories were found, the structuring signals (a subcategory of text-oriented bundles) were absent in the corpus. Moreover, this study found the gap between tokens and types of each bundle function, indicating the restricted variants of bundles used by the learners. Considering the low frequency of text-oriented bundles, the absence of structuring bundles, and restricted bundles, thus the exposure of more lexical bundles serving multiple functions in writing materials is necessary, especially bundles used for organizing and structuring texts.

Abstract

Previous studies have proven some discrepancies between language presented in EFL textbooks and the real use of English. This fact contradicts the teaching materials’ aim, which is intended to equip the learners to be communicatively competent. This study then investigates the use of adjectives, limited to ‘great’ and ‘good’ in terms of the frequent and strong co-occurrences, i.e., collocations, in a general reference corpus of Standard English to be compared with those in Indonesian EFL textbooks. The data were collected from both the corpus and the textbooks, but the analyses in the textbooks were generated based on the Mutual Information (MI) score of the collocates. Based on the comparison, it is evident that there are some similarities between adjective use in the textbooks and the corpus in terms of verb collocates of the adjectives. The mismatches, however, are quite remarkable, especially in terms of the variability of adverb collocates and the absence of prominent noun collocates in the textbooks. Pedagogically speaking, these results should be taken into consideration in writing the textbooks to enhance the quality of the language content prepared for the learners in the EFL context.
