Abstract

Lexical bundles, which are recurring sequences of multiple words, play a crucial role in both written and spoken discourse. Understanding the presence and patterns of these bundles in educational materials is essential for effective language instruction and material development. This research aims to identify the most commonly utilized functional classifications of 3-word lexical bundles in junior high school EFL textbooks. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research methodology with a corpus-based analysis approach. The study's main methodological framework is a corpus-based approach, which combines quantitative and qualitative components to offer a thorough examination of the data. The data of this research comprises a collection of Indonesian junior high school EFL textbooks officially approved by the Ministry of Education. Specifically, the study examined textbooks used in grades 7-9, published in 2022. AntConc 4.3.1 was used to analyze the corpus, and N-Gram Tool was used to generate the 3-word lexical bundles in this study. The study shows that the most commonly utilized functional classifications of 3-word lexical bundles in junior high school EFL textbooks is the referential expressions category; there are 914 bundles (44.76%). Furthermore, the implication of this research is that these bundles should be used by educators, especially those implementing the independent curriculum, to create instructional materials that enhance students' syntactic and pragmatic skills.

Abstract

Violence, bullying, and crime in schools have become prevalent issues in Indonesia, with the government and educational institutions actively working to prevent these behaviors. Peace values, which can be taught through textbooks, play a crucial role in this effort. Despite the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, no research has explicitly examined the representation of peace values in the English textbooks published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology. The study investigates the representation of peace values in the English for Nusantara textbook for Junior High Schools. Using Critical Discourse Analysis by Fairclough, the study found that the textbook represents three types of peace values, textually and visually: inner peace, social peace, and peace with nature. However, these values are still represented disproportionately. In practice, this research can be used for English teachers in selecting, designing, and evaluating learning materials which represent the peace values suitably to students. Apart from that, it could be a reference for book authors to develop materials which are balanced in presenting peace values according to Indonesian students' requirements. In addition, this study can be an alternative for the government in curricula design and evaluation.

Abstract

The controversy of whether the English language should be taught inductively or deductively, implicitly or explicitly, consciously or subconsciously does not seem to arrive at its compromises yet. In the meantime, the methodology for English language teaching in the Indonesian EFL context has been ascribed to the inductive teaching paradigm. However, practical demands seem to have forced the teachers to develop their own teaching strategies. It is a serious problem for English teachers, especially during their early-career teaching. The current study aims to investigate problems in the implementation of inductive approaches along with some key strategies to cope with the problems. The data were obtained through a semi-structured interview involving two EFL teachers. The data was sourced from the participants' stated experiences and documents of their recorded classroom practice. The results yielded numerous contextual problems using an inductive approach, including students' capability, grammar complexity, achievement, and time insufficiency. The study also revealed key strategies teachers take, including re-adjusting their instruction procedures when an inductive approach is applied. The study implies that teachers and educational practitioners should be aware of redesigning existing learning methodologies that can be more contextualized and meet the learners' needs.

Abstract

Many temporal terms in human life are frequently misspelled, particularly on the internet. This study aims to investigate the extent to which these temporal terms have been incorrectly written. The methodology involves querying the largest Indonesian digital corpus with specific queries based on commonly misspelled temporal terms in daily usage. This corpus-based analysis is intended to ensure empirical and measurable data. The study's findings indicate that errors in writing these temporal terms can be classified into spelling errors, capitalization errors, and spacing errors. Upon classification and quantification, it was found that the majority of these errors are associated with religious terms, such as Ramadan and zuhur, which are often written incorrectly. Errors were also found in the use of the preposition di replacing pada for indicating time and the use of jam instead of pukul. This study emphasizes the need for evaluation in language education and outreach to improve public understanding of standard spelling

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of modal verbs expressing prediction and volition in Indonesian EFL textbooks for junior high schools aligned with the Kurikulum Merdeka. Employing a corpus-based methodology, the analysis compares modal usage in textbooks against two prominent native corpora: the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and the British National Corpus (BNC). The findings highlight the dominant use of the modal verb "will" and underrepresentation of "would" and "shall," suggesting a limited semantic range presented to learners. This research provides pedagogical insights into improving the authenticity and effectiveness of EFL materials by aligning them more closely with authentic language usage. The study contributes to the growing body of corpus-based linguistic research and proposes practical measures to align language instruction with real-world communication demands. Through detailed linguistic comparison and discussion of pedagogical implications, this article aims to enhance textbook quality and language instruction for Indonesian EFL learners.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores gender representation in Indonesian English Language Teaching (ELT) textbooks for Junior High School under the Merdeka Curriculum, employing a corpus-assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The research identifies gender-related references and analyzes positive and negative character constructions. The findings indicate a persistent gender imbalance, with male references appearing more frequently than female references in categories such as famous names, fictional names, ordinary names, and pronouns. Male characters are often portrayed with a mix of positive and negative traits, while female characters are predominantly depicted in a positive light. The study concludes that while progress has been made, there is still a significant need for more balanced and inclusive gender representation in educational materials. Addressing these imbalances is crucial for creating an equitable learning environment that reflects and promotes gender equality.

Abstract

The use of the word “maha” in the social media era is interesting to discuss. The word “maha”, for some people, is regarding to the divine. This research aims to determine the use and meaning of the word “maha” in three literature manuscripts, namely Bustan al-Salatin (1640), Hikayat Raja Bikrama Sakti (1830) and Negeri 5 Menara (2009). This research is included as qualitative research with a descriptive-analytical design. The data collection method chosen was the note-taking method. The theories used in this research were the collocation theory from Halliday and Hasan (1976) and the meaning component theory from Nida (1975). The data sources for this research were three manuscripts from different periods, namely Bustan al-Salatin (1640), Hikayat Raja Bikrama Sakti (1830), and Negeri 5 Menara (2009). This research involved a corpus approach regarding research data sources. From the results of the analysis, the word “maha” does not only refer to God or divine. In the Bustan al-Salatin manuscript, the word “maha” can refer to God, king, places, activities, animals, and objects; in the Hikayat Raja Bikrama Sakti manuscript, it refers to God and king; and in the Negeri 5 Menara manuscript, it refers to God and objects.
