Abstract

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are dangerous diseases and result in death. The problems found by partners are the low coverage of NCD screening targets, access to health services and the absence of an integrated services centre for the elderly in the targetted area, which impacts NCD monitoring not being carried out. Community service activities aimed to prevent and suppress NCD cases, especially for older people in vulnerable groups. The solution was to detect NCD and provide education and counselling for older people with NCD problems. The community service partner was the Public Health Center. The method of implementing activities was health screening (measuring height and weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and uric acid), providing health education about hypertension and diabetes mellitus and health counselling for those indicated by NCDs in Pauh sub-District, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The screening results found 15 healthy older people, 13 people with hypertension, ten people with diabetes, nine people with rheumatism, and seven people with high cholesterol. The results of education and counselling found an increase in knowledge by 16.69 points—follow-up plans by partners to form elderly health centres.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 is a non-communicable disease, and the incidence continues to increase. Various factors can increase the incidence of type 2 DM, but many people lack the awareness to determine risk factors and the efforts that need to be made to reduce the risk of type 2 DM. This community service aims to conduct health examinations and determine the risk level of DM type 2 in Sungai Buluh, Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. This community service activity includes health examination, determining risk levels of risk type 2 DM, and personal education to reduce the risk of type 2 DM. The instrument used to determine the risk of type 2 DM is the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC). Type 2 DM screening showed that most people had a slightly increased risk 37 people (45.6%), low-risk 26 people (32.1%), high-risk 13 people (16.1%) and very high-risk five people (6.2%). It is hoped that health centers will carry out risk level screening and education on reducing the risk of type 2 DM as a planned and structured activity to increase public awareness to prevent and reduce the risk of type 2 DM.

Abstract

Nurses at public health centers play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of disasters, but their preparedness for handling emergency situations is often not optimal. In Padang City, a study was conducted to assess the level of preparedness among nurses in disaster management. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 138 nurses working in 24 public health centers through a stratified random sampling method. The results showed that 58% of the nurses had a high level of preparedness. More specifically, 58% had good knowledge of disaster management, 74.6% displayed a positive attitude, and 68.8% practiced good disaster management techniques. These findings indicate that public health center nurses in Padang City are generally well-prepared in terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice. However, further improvement is still needed. Increasing the number of trained nurses and providing regular disaster management training are recommended to enhance preparedness in disaster response.

Abstract

In completing their theses, students from Program A and Program B often face various obstacles that can lead to anxiety. One approach to managing this anxiety is through coping strategies, which vary among students depending on their individual anxiety levels. This study aimed to determine the differences in coping strategies based on anxiety levels between students in Program A and Program B during their thesis completion. The research utilized a comparative, cross-sectional study design. The population consisted of 99 students from the nursing faculty across both programs. Data were collected using the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS) and a coping strategies questionnaire. The analysis was conducted using frequency distribution, chi-square, and Mann-Whitney tests, with a significance level of p < 0.05 and a 95% confidence interval. The results showed that both Program A and Program B students experienced moderate anxiety, with 69.4% and 59.5%, respectively. Students in Program A predominantly used emotion-focused coping (53.2%), while students in Program B primarily employed problem-focused coping (81.1%). The chi-square test revealed no significant relationship between anxiety levels and coping strategies in Program A (p-value 0.459), whereas a significant relationship was found in Program B (p-value 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant difference in coping strategies and anxiety levels between students in both programs (p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it is recommended that students utilize effective coping strategies problem focused coping to manage anxiety, thereby facilitating timely thesis completion.
