Abstract

Typhoid fever can be diagnosed in suspected patients through the Tubex TF test, which has a relatively high sensitivity and specificity of 73%. Typhoid fever can also be diagnosed by examining the number of mononuclear leukocytes, particularly monocytes and lymphocytes, which are indicators of bacterial infection. Typhoid fever is a disease caused by Salmonella typhi. Typhoid fever cases in Indonesia range from 350 to 810 per 100,000 people, with a prevalence of 1.6%. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the number of mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes and lymphocytes) and Tubex TF results in patients suspected of typhoid fever. This study was an analytical observational study and the sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, with all subjects meeting the selection criteria, amounting to 63 samples. The number of mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes, lymphocytes) was determined using a Hematology Analyzer and the Tubex TF test was determined using the IMBI method. Spearman's correlation test was used for statistical analysis. The findings showed a significant correlation between the number of monocytes and the Tubex TF results in patients suspected of typhoid fever (p = 0.006 < ? = 0.05). In contrast, no significant correlation was found between the number of lymphocytes and the Tubex TF results in the same group of patients (p = 0.296 > ? = 0.05). = 0,05).

Abstract

Hyperglycaemia is caused by poor insulin production and insulin resistance, which is the beginning of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The blockage of blood vessels caused by this disease is due to the increase in blood sugar levels, which is the cause of diabetic ulcers. As a result, patients are often unaware of their injuries. This research aims to identify differences in platelet indices (MPV, PDW and PCT) in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus who have diabetic ulcers and those who do not. This research uses observational analysis methods and a cross-sectional analysis approach. The independent variable in this study was type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with and without diabetic ulcers, while the dependent variable in this study was the platelet value, consisting of MPV in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with and without diabetic ulcers of 7,716 fL and 7,837 fL. The mean PCT in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with and without diabetic ulcers was 0.225% and 0.245%, respectively. The mean PDW in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with and without diabetic ulcers was 18.825% and 14.237%, respectively. The results of data analysis using unpaired t-test showed a p-value of 0.00 for PDW and 0.002 for MPV, so it was concluded that there were differences in MPV and PDW in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients who had diabetic ulcers and those who did not.

Abstract

Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, with a complex pathophysiology often involving interactions between genetic factors, the environment, and pathogenic microorganisms. Streptococcus viridans is a clinically significant pathogenic bacterium associated with infections of the cardiovascular system, including infective endocarditis, pericarditis, and other complications. However, timely and accurate diagnosis of this bacterial infection in cases of acute heart disease is often challenging, requiring rapid and sensitive diagnostic methods. Currently, diagnostic methods for detecting Streptococcus viridans in cases of acute heart disease tend to be time-consuming; therefore, developing a rapid diagnostic method that can detect both bacteria simultaneously is crucial. The aim of this study is to develop a rapid and sensitive diagnostic method for detecting the presence of Streptococcus viridans in samples from patients with heart disease. The method used is the identification of specific genes, the design of primer sequences, and the design of probes using specific 16s rRNA genes using bioinformatics techniques. Based on the research results obtained primer pair sequences are: oligonucleotide primer forward 5’-GCGACGATACATAGCCGAC-3’; primer reverse is 3’- CGAGCCAGTCTGAAAGC-5’, while the probe sequence is 5’-GACTGAGACACGGCCCAGACTC-3’. Primer and probe pair quality tests showed very good primer and probe quality for amplification with a 120 bp amplification product. Suggestions in the research are that it is necessary to continue with qPCR optimization to determine the melting temperature which is then carried out sensitivity tests of primer pair sequences and specific 16s rRNA Streptococcus viridans gene probes.

Abstract

Stunting, a significant health problem in Indonesia, must be addressed. Stunting is defined as a condition caused by inadequate nutritional intake that does not meet nutritional needs. Integrated Service Posts (Posyandu) are a way to provide health services to the community and have the ability to develop resources, especially in health matters. The methods used in this community service activity are lecture/presentation and discussion and question and answer methods. The lecture activities included presenting material on the importance of balanced nutrition during the first 1000 days of life (HPK), explaining the role of cadres in providing simple counseling to the community, facilitating discussions and question-and-answer sessions, and concluding the session. Overall, the implemented activities showcase the active participation of both the cadres and the community. These results serve as the basis for implementing further activities in the form of monitoring, evaluation, and more targeted health interventions.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that is a major cause of stroke and coronary heart disease. It is commonly found in the community and is a significant contributor to mortality and disability worldwide. A preliminary study showed that more than 50% of Prolanis members in Bangsah Village, Sreseh Subdistrict, Sampang Regency had high cholesterol levels; therefore, alternative supplements are needed to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Garlic is a food ingredient that is widely available in the community but has not been widely utilized as a cholesterol-lowering supplement. Garlic contains allicin, which has strong antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It also contains ajoene, saponins, flavonoids, and various sulfur compounds that contribute to its health benefits. Studies have shown that garlic consumption can help reduce total cholesterol and LDL levels. Therefore, education on processing garlic into black garlic is highly needed to reduce cholesterol levels among hypertensive Prolanis members. The results of the community service activity showed that the program was implemented smoothly and successfully, starting from the survey and coordination stage, the initial assessment, program implementation, and evaluation. The success of this PKM activity is expected to be beneficial for the wider community, especially regarding the use of garlic to reduce cholesterol levels. The evaluation results showed a 17% reduction in the number of hypertensive Prolanis members with high cholesterol levels.

Abstract

Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is a progressive and irreversible decrease in kidney function. One risk factor that affects the progression of CRF is dyslipidemia due to abnormalities of lipid metabolisms. Dyslipidemia is characterized by the increase level of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and a decrease in HDL cholesterol level. eGFR is a parameter for assessing the excretion function, by calculating the amount of filtrate produced by the renal glomerulus. This study aims to determine the relationship between serum triglyceride levels with eGFR in patient suffering from CRF at Jemursari Islamic Hospital Surabaya. This type of research is descriptive experimental with cross–sectional design. The study population was the patients with CRF. The primary data in this study was the results of examination of serum triglyceride levels in patients with CRF. The secondary data (serum creatinine levels, body weight, age, and sex) was obtained from medical records of CRF patients in February 2019. As much as 12% of patients were in the 40–50 years old category, 36% of patients were 51–60 years old, 44% of patients were 61–70 years old, and 8% of patients were 71–80 years old. 72% of patients were male. The mean triglyceride level was 146.68 mg/dL and the average eGFR was 19.86 mL/min/1.73m2. The relationships between triglyceride levels and eGFR was carried out by the Spearman–rho test where r value was –0.442 and value was 0.027. It was concluded that there was a significant negative correlation between serum triglyceride levels and eGFR in patients with CRF.

Abstract

Background: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a condition of thyroid hormone deficiency that occurs at birth. The TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test is crucial for diagnosing hypothyroidism. CH is known to cause prolonged unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between TSH and indirect bilirubin levels in neonates suspected of having jaundice. Methods: This is a non-experimental, retrospective study conducted at Lombok Dua Dua Lontar Mother and Child Hospital in Surabaya. The study involved data collection on neonates aged 2–7 days suspected of jaundice, whose TSH and indirect bilirubin levels were measured between November 2022 to April 2024. Results: Among 100 neonates, 62% were aged 2-4 days, while 38% were aged 5-7 days. The majority were male (56%), with female comprising 44%. Of the 100 neonates, only 1 (1%) had borderline TSH levels, while 99% had normal TSH levels. Hyperbilirubinemia was observed in 94% of the neonates, while 6% had normal indirect bilirubin levels. Statistical analysis using the Spearman correlation showed no significant link between TSH and indirect bilirubin levels (p = 0.802). Conclusions: While this study did not find a clear connection between TSH and indirect bilirubin levels in neonates suspected of having jaundice, one case of borderline TSH was identified. This neonate required referral to pediatric endocrinology, as untreated congenital hypothyroidism can lead to mental retardation. Despite limited research linking TSH and bilirubin levels in jaundiced neonates, routine screening for congenital hypothyroidism using TSH testing should be reconsidered. Future studies could benefit from focusing on specific causes of neonatal jaundice to help narrow down research questions in this area.
