Abstract

Introduction. Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a malignant condition of the nasopharynx. The cancer therapy given is usually radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy (CT), or a combination of RT and CT. Cancer therapy and poor oral hygiene can lead to susceptibility to fungal infections, one of which is pseudomembranous kandidiasis (thrush). The aim of this report was to present oral pseudomembrane kandidiasis patient with nasopharynx cancer. Case report. A 52-year-old female patient was referred to the hospital's dental clinic with complaints of a white coating on the inside of her cheeks, roof of the mouth, and tongue since ± 1 week ago. The patient feels pain when swallowing and discomfort when opening the mouth. The results of clinical and supporting examinations showed that the patient was diagnosed with oral pseudomembranous kandidiasis. The patient was treated using nystatin drop and chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% Conclusion. The NPC patient in this case was diagnosed with pseudomembranous kandidiasis (thrush) caused by Candida albicans. Early management of cases of pseudomembranous kandidiasis in NPC patients was very important so that the lesion would not disrupt the general condition of the patient as a whole. Collaboration and coordination from various specialist divisions were needed.

Abstract

Abstract

Poor oral hygiene might lead to Candida albicans infection. Since long term used of synthetics antifungal therapy could lead to fungal resistance, an alternative of antifungal therapy was needed. It has been reported that Gambier (Uncaria gambir ROXB) contains catechins and tannins which have antifungal effects invitro, but research using Gambier extract as a toothpaste for daily oral hygiene maintenance has not established. This study was done to determine the antifungal effect and the synergy of the combination of 10% gambier and fluorides in toothpaste preparation against Candida albicans. A true experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only design group was established. Three groups namely 10% gambier extract toothpaste, the combination of 10% gambier extract and 0.0048% fluorides toothpaste, lastly the 0.0048% fluoride toothpaste were tested. Gambier extract was obtained using the soxhletation method and the separation of the solvent from the extract was carried out by the distillation method. Agar Well method antifungal test was used to measure the inhibition zone value of tested groups. Data were analyzed using one-way Anova. Inhibition test of tested groups showed that only combination of gambier and fluorides toothpaste was effective in inhibiting Candida albicans with an average inhibition zone value of 8.35 mm. Toothpaste preparation of 10% Gambier extract and 0.0048% fluorides combination produce a synergistic therapeutic effect in antifungal therapy.

Abstract

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a diabetes disease that attacks the retina of the eye and can be recognized through retinal images. The process of assisting retinal images can be done by applying deep learning-based methods, one of which is the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). CNN has many architectures that can perform image classification processes, namely ResNet-50, MobileNet, and EfficientNet. Weaknesses of each architecture can be overcome through ensemble learning methods that can add up the performance results of each classification method. The study applies the ensemble learning method to improve the performance of the ResNet-50, MobileNet, and EfficientNet architectures in paying for DR disease on the retina by weighted voting. The data used are the APTOS and EyePACS datasets. The method in this research is data collection, training, testing, and evaluation of each architecture and ensemble learning. The results of the superior ensemble learning performance in the value of accuracy, F1-Score, and Cohens Kappa were obtained respectively 93.3%, 93.42%, and 0.866. The best specificity value was obtained by Resnet-50 at 99.78% and the highest sensitivity value was obtained by EfficientNet at 96.2%. Based on the classification results of each architectural and ensemble learning, it can be interpreted that the proposed ensemble learning method is excellent to perform image classification for Diabetic Retinopathy.

Abstract

Skill development for deaf students at SLB-B YPAC Palembang still faces significant challenges, particularly due to communication barriers between teachers and students that hinder knowledge transfer. This community service program aims to enhance hard skills (technical sewing skills in patchwork and quilting) as well as soft skills (communication, teamwork, and independence) through the integration of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based application called Sign Talk. The implementation method was carried out through a workshop and intensive mentoring scheme over 4 months, which included 3 main training sessions, each lasting 120 minutes, for 15 deaf students. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test instruments analyzed descriptively. The results of the activity showed an increase in students’ soft skills of 40.5%. For hard skills, specifically sewing competencies, there was a 23.31% increase. Although 90% of participants rated the Sign Talk application as very helpful in understanding instructions during the activity, further development of the Sign Talk vocabulary is needed. Additionally, this activity can be expanded to include other hard skill trainings with Sign Talk serving as the communication medium.

Abstract

Introduction: Glucosyltransferase (Gtf) enzyme is an enzyme produced by Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) bacteria that plays an important role in the process of attachment and virulence of bacterial colonies on the tooth surface. Gambier plants (Uncaria gambir (Roxb.)) have the main content of catechins and tannins that can prevent the formation of extracellular glucans that bind S. mutans bacteria on the tooth surface. The purpose of this narrative review is to determine the potential of gambir extract on Gtf enzymes produced by S. mutans. This article is a narrative review, with databases sourced from PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Cochrane, and Science Direct. Review: A total of 251 articles were identified, and 6 journals were filtered that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for analysis. Catechins and tannins contained in gambir have inhibitory action against Gtfs, so that the activity of EPS synthesis by S. mutans is blocked. Inhibition of Gtf by catechins does not interfere with the existence of microbes in the oral environment. Therefore, the ability of catechins extracted from gambir plants is able to inhibit the Gtf enzyme selectively, and is developed as a material that can prevent the formation of dental caries. Conclusion: Gambier extract has the potential to inhibit the formation of Gtf enzymes.
