Abstract

The local community’s culture has been recognized as playing an essential role in achieving food security. This study attempts to demystify a cultural tradition among an Indonesian agriculture society, called Mekambare, that plays such a role in sustainable agricultural management. It was conducted in East Kolaka Regency, an area dominated by lowland rice farmers. Framed in a qualitative method, this study used observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies as techniques of data collection. The results showed that Mekambare played a crucial role in forming social solidarity among lowland rice farming communities. Through Mekambare, farming communities build mutual cooperation and support one another in overcoming challenges related to supplying food demands. This social solidarity is manifested in the exchange of food commodities, social support, and the dissemination of traditional knowledge in agricultural management. With Mekambare, the lowland rice farming communities maintain the balance of the agricultural ecosystem by utilizing natural predators, utilizing organic fertilizers from livestock manure, and implementing integrated weed control. This research can make a positive contribution to efforts to achieve sustainable food security and the welfare of farming communities in East Kolaka Regency.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the reasons why Bugis nobles migrated to Basala District and how Bugis nobles showed their identity in overseas areas. The results of this study indicate that the arrival of Bugis aristocrats in Basala District was due to a family invitation factor and the desire to improve the economy, due to the area of agricultural land available and the price of land which was relatively cheap compared to their native area or in South Sulawesi. The way Bugis aristocrats show their identity with the call of Pung and the difference in dowry given to noble descendants, not only that, nobility can also be distinguished by looking at the roof of the three-story house. There are several suggestions from this research, namely, the people in the District, including the Bugis nobles, to maintain good relations, and for the government to continue to develop the culture of the people in Basala District, including the Bugis tribes who are there.

Mangrove data collection is done through field observation method (primary data) which aims to determine the existing mangrove forest area in Torokeku Village, Tinanggea District, South Konawe Regency. The community's understanding of the benefits of mangroves varies greatly, but the most common is that they understand the benefits of mangroves as a home protector from sea waves, and a good growing place for various types of marine life such as fish and crabs, meeting their daily needs; 2). In general, the status of the Mangrove ecosystem in the study site has been degraded due to the conversion of the Mangrove forest area into a medium category through ponds or fish ponds.
