Abstract

The research consists of two variables, the independent variable and dependent variable. Independent variable is reading technique (skimming-scanning) and dependent variable is reading comprehension achievement on narrative text. The objectives of this research is to find out whether there is influence of reading technique (skimming-scanning) on reading comprehension achievement on narrative text. The research method applied is quasi experiment design, it means that the research after the fact. The instrument that is used to collect data is objective test. It consists of 60 items before try out and then after try out only 30 items which have good validity and reliability are used. The population in this research was all first grade students of MAN 18 Pondok Kopi, consisting of 101 students divided in 3 classes. Of these three classes, two of which were used as samples: experiment and control class, respectively consisting of 35 and 31 students. The sampling method is cluster random sampling. The data collected from the samples were then analyzed statistically with t-test, after the data fulfilled the pre requisite tests of normality and homogeneity. The two samples come from normality distribution population since both significances were higher than 0,05, namely 0,119 > 0,05 and 0,179 > 0,05 and thus the H0 is accepted. The homogeneity tests applied to both samples revealed that the variance of the two samples were homogenous: 0.445 > 0,05 for experiment class and 0,245 > 0,05 for control class. The result of statistical calculating using significant 5% (0,05) of t-test with degree of freedom (df) = N1+N2-2 = 66 revealed that sig < 0,05 (0,00 < 0,05). Based on this, the research rejected the null hypothesis (H0) and accepted the alternative hypothesis (H1). Therefore, there is influence of reading technique (skimming-scanning) on reading comprehension achievement on narrative text of the first grade students’ at MAN 18 Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to determine the relationship between (1) reading habit and listening skill in English, (2) vocabulary mastery and listening skill in English, and (3) reading habit together with vocabulary mastery and the students’ English listening skill. The research was conducted in As-syafi’iyah Islamic Senior High School (SMA Islam As-syafi’iyah 02 Pondok Gede). The population of the research is all students in As-syafi’iyah Islamic Senior High School. The sample used 30 students who selected randomly. The technique for analyzing the data was the statistical technique of correlation and regression. The results of the research are as follows: (1) there is a positive correlation between reading habit and listening skill, with coefficient correlation (rx1y) = 0,646 and the regression equation Ŷ = 5,742 + 0,152X1. The coefficient of determination yielded is (r²) = 0,416. It means that 41,6% of the listening skill in English is determined by reading habit. (2) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening skill in English, with coefficient correlation (rx2y) = 0,764 and the regression equation Ŷ = 6,161 + 0,657X2. The coefficient of determination yielded is (r²) = 0,583. It means that 58,3% of the listening skill in English is determined by vocabulary mastery. (3) there is a positive correlation between reading habit, vocabulary mastery and listening skill, with coefficient correlation (Ry1.2) = 0,791 and the regression equation Ŷ = 3,613 + 0,063X1 + 0,510X2. The coefficient of determination yielded is (R²) = 0,626. It means that 62,6% of the students’ English Listening skill is determined by reading habit and vocabulary mastery. Therefore, from the result of this research it can be concluded that students’ English listening skill can be enhanced by increasing students’ reading habit and vocabulary mastery either individually or simultaneously.

The problem of this research was many students got difficulties in speaking. In this research the researcher tried to investigate about think pair share in teaching speaking. The objective of this research were to know and describe the significant of the influence of think pair share strategy towards students’ speaking ability and to know and describe the average score of students’ speaking ability which is taught through think pair share is higher than which is taught through conventional technique. The research was conducted at second semester students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2017/2018. In this research the researcher used experimental method. The population of this research was 94 students in 2 classes. The sample of the research were two classes, the first class was ENG IIB consisted of 47 students as the experimental class and the second class was ENG IIA consisted of 47 students as the control class. In the experimental class was the students were taught by think pair share strategy and in control class the students were taught by using the conventional technique. In conducting the research, the writer used Cluster Random Sampling technique to establish the experiment class and the control class, because all students were the sample is homogeneous. In data collecting technique, it was used spoken test, it is included instruction that students should make a composition based on the topic chosen. In data analysis, the writer used t-test formula. It was found that ttest > ttable = 2.98 > 1.67 for significant level 5% and ttable 2.39 for significant level 1%. It means that Hα is accepted. So, the researcher concluded that there is the influence of using think pair share strategy towards students’ speaking ability of English Department of STKIP PGRI Bandar Lampung in 2017/2018

Abstract

The problem of this research is many students get difficulties in writing especially in writing descriptive text. In this research the writer tried to investigate” Brainstorming” in teaching writing. The objectives of the research was to know and describe whether the average score of students’ ability in writing descriptive text which is taught through brainstorming is higher than which is taught through lecturing, to know and describe the influence of Brainstorming towards students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The research was conducted at the seventh class students of SMPN 2 Bukit Kemuning Lampung Utara in 2014/2015. In this research the writer used experimental method. The population of this research are 96 students. The writer took two classes as sample. The first class was VIIa as experiment class that consist of 32 students while VIIb as control class that consist of 32 students. The sample in this research was taken by using cluster random sampling technique. In data collecting technique, it was used written test, it is include instruction that students should make a composition which consist at least 100 words based on the topics chosen, the topics are: My beloved mother, my best friend, my hometown. In data analysis, the writer used ttest formula. It was found that tratio > ttab. = 4.03 and ttable 2.00 So, the hypothesis null(Ho) is rejected and Hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted. It means that there is positive and significant influence of using Brainstorming towards students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Therefore to improve the students’ writing ability, the writer suggest that the teacher can use Brainstorming as an alternative technique in teaching writing and give more exercises in writing.
