Abstract

This research focused on analyzing the types and reasons for code-switching and code-mixing that occur in five videos on Leonardo Edwin’s YouTube channel. The aims of this research were: (1) to identify the types of code-switching used by Leonardo Edwin on his YouTube channel, (2) to identify the types of code-mixing used by Leonardo Edwin on his YouTube channel, and (3) to determine the reasons for the code-switching and code-mixing employed by Leonardo Edwin on his YouTube channel. The objects of this research were five videos from Leonardo Edwin's YouTube channel, titled Alaska. To conduct this research, the researcher employed a descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher used content analysis based on the Hoffman framework. The results of this research show that the dominant type of code-switching is inter-sentential code-switching, accounting for 58.07%, while the dominant type of code-mixing is intra-sentential code-mixing, accounting for 68%. The primary reason for code-switching and code-mixing is discussing specific topics, which constitutes 80.77%. The implications of this study are to provide insights into the types and reasons for code-switching and code-mixing used by Leonardo Edwin and to illustrate how bilingual individuals utilize code-switching and code-mixing on YouTube.

Abstract

Code mixing is a common strategy in communicating among person who learn or use more than one language. This research has aimed to focus on analysing variety types and reasons of code-mixing used in Fathia Fairuza’s TikTok video. The study uses a descriptive qualitative to report and describe the result of analysis data. Theory by Hoffman was used to classify types which are intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and involving change of pronunciation. Hoffmans’ theory about motivation in using code-mixing was used in this study that includes talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, and repetition used for clarification. The subject data in this study is Fathia Fairuza’s utterances on her TikTok video. This study has found that the most used type of code-mixing was intra-sentential, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor as the common reason. This study was aimed to bring knowledge about kind of code-mixing and motivation or purpose in using code-mixing on TikTok video.

Abstract

The objective of this research are to know whether there is a positive influence of story pyramid strategy towards students’ reading ability of narrative text , and to know whether the average score of students’ reading ability of narrative text who learned reading through story pyramid strategy higher than those who learn reading through conventional technique.The research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 19 Pesawaran. The research used the experimental method. The population of the research was taken from the students at the second semester at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 19 Pesawaran in academic year 2016/2017.This research used cluster random sampling technique to took the sample.The researcher took two classes as the sample. The first class as experimental class. It was VIII A and the second class as control class. It was VIII B class.In analyzing the data used t–test formula.Based on the data analysis and hypothesis test,it found that the result of calculating was t-test (4.91) with t-table (2,00) so, Ho was refused. It means that there is possitive infuence of teaching reading through story pyramid strategy.And the average score of students’ reading ability who learn reading through story pyramid strategy is higher than who learn reading through conventional technique. The average score of experimental class was57,79 and Control class was46.39. So, there was influence of story pyramid strategy towards students’ reading ability of narrative text at the eight grade of SMP Negeri 19 Pesawaran.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of the meaning of conversations, which occurs based on the context and the situation. This study focuses on analyzing the flouting maxim in the Barbie (2023) movie. The researcher aims to identify the types of flouting maxims in the conversations carried out by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie, and also to capture the implied meaning of what is conveyed through the flouting maxim. This study uses Grice's grand theory, namely the cooperative principle (1975). This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Meanwhile, the movie and its transcript are used as data sources. The researcher serves as the main instrument in this research. In collecting data, the researcher watched the movie, identified the dialogues that contained flouting maxims, classified them based on the types of flouting maxims, and analyzed their implicatures based on the context of the conversation. Although many studies have discussed Gricean maxims, limited research has focused on how characters in recent popular movies flout maxims to express hidden meanings. The results of this research show that there are four types of flouting maxims in the movie, with a total of 27 data found. Those are flouting maxim of quantity, it was found 6 times; flouting maxim of quality, it was found 12 times; flouting maxim of relation, it was found 7 times; and flouting maxim of manner, it was found 2 times. Researchers also found the implicature of the flouting maxim used by the characters in the Barbie (2023) movie. These findings are expected to help readers understand how pragmatic strategies can reveal implied messages in fictional conversations

Abstract

The problem raised in this study is the relationship between vocabulary and sentence mastery and the ability to compose descriptions. This research was conducted because of the reality in the field that the ability to compose descriptions and mastery of vocabulary, as well as sentences that need to be developed. This study aims to describe the relationship between vocabulary and sentence mastery and the ability to compose a description of the seventh grade students of SMPN 26 Bandar Lampung. The techniques used in collecting research data are questionnaires, tests, and observations. Research data analysis techniques include requirements analysis test, statistical analysis, and research hypothesis testing techniques. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that, (1) there is a positive and significant relationship between sentence structure and the ability to compose descriptions, indicated by a correlation coefficient of 0.766 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.587 or 58.7%, (2) there is a relationship a positive and significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and the ability to compose descriptions indicated by a correlation coefficient of 0.662 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.438 or 43.8%, (3) there is a positive and significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and sentence structure and ability composing a description shown by the correlation coefficient of 0.804 and the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.646 or 64.6%.

Abstract

The problem was raised in this research is the relationship between mastery of diction and writing interest with the ability to compose narratives. This research was conducted because of the reality on the ground that the ability to compose narratives and mastery of diction, as well as interest in writing, need to be developed. This study aims to describe the relationship between diction mastery and writing interest with the ability to compose narratives for fifth grade students at SDN 4 Tanjung Aman. To achieve the research objectives mentioned above, the authors use the correlational method, meaning that data is collected after all the events in question have taken place. The techniques used in collecting research data are questionnaires, tests, and observations. Research data analysis techniques include requirements analysis test, statistical analysis, and research hypothesis testing techniques. The results of the study show: (1) diction mastery is positively related to the ability to compose narratives as indicated by a correlation coefficient of 0.775 > 0.535 (r table); (2) writing interest is positively related to the ability to compose narratives as indicated by a correlation coefficient of 0.649 > 0.361 ( r table); and (3) mastery of diction and writing interest together have a positive relationship with the ability to compose narrative coefficients of 0.807.

Abstract

The research aimed to know the influence of Think, Predict, Read, and Connect strategy on students’ reading comprehension. This strategy helped the students comprehend main idea, supporting idea, inference, reference and vocabularies of the text. In this research the writer used quantitative method and categorized the research as quasi experimental method. The sample was taken by using Cluster Random Sampling technique. There were two classes for the sample. X PM 1 was an experimental class consisted of 35 students and X PM 2 was a control class consisted of 34 students. Based on the data analysis and testing of hypotheses, it showed that the average score of students who were taught through Think, Predict, Read, and Connect (TPRC) strategy was higher than which was taught through direct instruction. It was got 75.24 > 63.97 and in the end of result, it showed that was higher than . In the calculation of two averages score, it was obtained 3.99 > 2.00 < 2.66 and in the calculation of the difference of two averages score, it was obtained 3.99 > 1.67 < 2.39. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significance influence of using Think, Predict, Read, and Connect strategy towards students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve students' vocabulary mastery through a word list. The research subjects were the ninth-grade students of SMP Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung, consisting of 28 students. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was employed, comprising two cycles. Data collection techniques included both test and non-test methods. A vocabulary test was administered to assess students’ vocabulary mastery, while an observation sheet was used for non-test data. Data analysis involved both quantitative and qualitative methods. Referring to the test results, the mean score of students’ learning activities in cycle 1 was 6.42, categorizing as less active. Meanwhile, in cycle 2, it increased to 7.32, still considered less active, showing an improvement of 0.9%. On the other hand, the mean score of the vocabulary test in cycle 1 was 69.04, with 7 students scoring ≥70, constituting 25%. In cycle 2, the mean score rose to 76.16, with 21 students scoring ≥70, accounting for 75%. This indicated an improvement of 7.12%. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that a word list effectively improves students’ vocabulary mastery in the ninth grade of SMP Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to improve students' vocabulary mastery through the use of the Hello English application for tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 8 Bandar Lampung during the 2023/2024 academic year. This study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this research were 35 students from class X.1. Both experimental and non-experimental data collection methods were utilized. Vocabulary tests (sections 1 and 2) were used for experimental data, while observation cards were employed for non-experimental data. Data analysis incorporated both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results of the study indicated that the Hello English application significantly improved students' vocabulary mastery. The average test scores increased from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. In the first cycle, 14 students (40%) met the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) with an average score of 70.63 points. In the second cycle, 24 students (69%) achieved the KKM, with an average score of 73 points. Additionally, the overall class performance improved from an average score of 6.5 in the first cycle to 7.22 in the second cycle, reflecting a shift from weak to satisfactory performance. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the implementation of the Hello English application effectively enhanced vocabulary mastery among the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 8 Bandar Lampung. This research implies that incorporating digital learning tools such as Hello English can be an effective strategy to address language learning challenges and foster student engagement in vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

Cooperative script is one strategy that can be used in reading comprehension. This strategy can help students comprehend the main idea, specific information, inferences, references, and vocabulary. The aim of the research to know the influence of using cooperative scripts on students' reading comprehension. The method in this research is experimental method in the quasi-experimental research design. In taking research samples, the writer used cluster random sampling. In using cluster random sampling, the writer take random samples from existing classes or populations to be used as research samples. The population in this research were students in the second semester of the tenth grade at SMA Negeri 7 Bandar Lampung during the academic year 2023/2024. The samples for this research were classes X.1 it consist of 35 and X.5 it consist of 34. In collecting data about students' reading comprehension, the writer used reading test. Based on the data calculation, the average score of experimental class was 77.9 and the average score of control class was 73.1. It means that the average score of experimental class is higher than control class. Based on calculating t-test was obtained 2.77 than t-table at signifinance level of 0.05 is 1.99 and 0.01 is 2.56. T-test > t-table it means t-test higher than t-table. So, there is an influence of cooperative script on students' reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMA Negeri 7 Bandar Lampung.
