Abstract

Despite a growing body of research on translanguaging internationally, more studies are needed to examine secondary school teachers’ reasons and purposes of translanguaging during English lessons, especially in Outer Circle countries such as Chile, Germany, China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. This paper aims to contribute to this emerging area of interest by investigating junior secondary school teachers’ reasons for and purposes of utilizing students’ linguistic repertoires during English language instruction in the Indonesian ELT context. Data were primarily collected through interviews with three teachers working at two schools in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The findings reveal several reasons for translanguaging, including limited exposure to English outside the classroom, lack of foundational English knowledge, restricted vocabulary, and diverse student learning needs and proficiency levels. Teachers reported using languages other than English to build rapport, foster a relaxed classroom atmosphere, reinforce or clarify instructions, facilitate comprehension, check understanding, and manage instructional time efficiently. These findings suggest that translanguaging can be an effective pedagogical strategy in English language classrooms, particularly in contexts with limited English exposure. The study points out the importance of incorporating translanguaging approaches into teacher education programs and recommends further research into its long-term effects on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a shift from offline to online learning systems, requiring all sectors of education to adapt swiftly to these changes. However, the transition to online learning has presented challenges, particularly in maintaining student engagement, comprehension, and numeracy literacy skills. Field data reveals that many teachers have not fully optimized the use of digital-based learning media to enhance numeracy literacy among students. Recognizing this gap, STKIP Kusuma Negara, in collaboration with the PKM Team, conducted a community service initiative at SD Negeri Srijaya 04 Bekasi. The primary objective of this initiative was to assist teachers in optimizing the use of digital technology in their teaching practices to improve students' numeracy literacy. The PKM program was implemented through a series of activities including socialization, introduction to digital tools, training sessions, and practical applications of numeracy literacy. The results of this initiative indicate an improvement in teachers' ability to integrate digital media into their teaching, leading to enhanced numeracy literacy skills among students through effective technology adaptation

Abstract

This study analyzes Viva La Vida by Coldplay to explore the deeper meaning behind its lyrics and music video. The song tells the story of a fallen king and expresses themes like power, loss, regret, and hope. As a multimodal text, it combines music, words, and visuals to deliver its message. Using a qualitative method, the researcher closely examined the lyrics and visuals. The analysis is based on three main theories: Barthes’ semiotics, Kristeva’s intertextuality and Kress & van Leeuwen’s multimodality. Barthes’ theory helps explain how words like “crown” and “puppet” carry not just literal meaning, but also feelings and cultural ideas. Kristeva’s intertextuality shows how the song connects with older stories from history, the Bible, and literature, such as the French Revolution and Shakespeare. These references give the song deeper emotional value. The music video supports the story through strong visual symbols like a dying rose, broken television, and gestures of surrender. According to Kress and van Leeuwen, these elements add to the overall meaning. In the end, Viva La Vida gives a clear message: power does not last forever, but people can learn and reflect. The song is also useful for learning English grammar, vocabulary, and critical thinking

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends on writing skills learning materials in Indonesianlanguage learning in higher education through bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software. This studyuses a bibliometric analysis method. Data were obtained through Publish or Perish to obtain metadata sourcedfrom Google Scholar between 2010 and 2025. Furthermore, the data were analyzed based on quantity, quality, and structure indicators using the VOSviewer. The results show that from 2015 to 2025, researchtrends on writing skills learning materials in Indonesian language learning in higher education experienced asignificant increase. Although in 2022 and 2025 there was a decline. Network visualization throughVOSviewer shows that the most frequently appearing terms are Indonesian language, learning material, student, and university, while research specifically discussing writing learning materials in Indonesianlanguage learning is still very limited. Articles with the highest citations emphasize learning media andlanguage teaching materials in general. These findings indicate a research gap as well as an opportunity forfurther research to develop teaching materials on writing topics that are more innovative and relevant to theneeds of Indonesian language learning in higher education. Keywords: Bibliometrics, Indonesian Language Learning, Learning Materials, Trends, VOSviewer
