Abstract

This article aims to investigate the roots of piracy on the west coast of Kalimantan during the 19th centuries, focusing on the complex interactions between the Pontianak and Sambas Sultanates and European powers. Challenging the common assumption that pirates in the region originated mainly from Sulu Mindanao and Bugis, this study employs a critical historical method to systematically analyze colonial sources and primary texts from the sultanates. The findings reveal that pirates on the west coast of Kalimantan were led by the Sultan and Prince Anom of the Sambas kingdom, who formed an alliance with the Ilanun to attack traders in Pontianak, Mempawah, and Banjar. Additionally, pirate activity was found around Sukadana Bay by the Tanjung Pura community due to the collapse of the Sukadana Kingdom's maritime power resulting from Dutch East Indies colonial expansion. The study highlights the complex interplay between political power dynamics and the challenges of piracy in the region, shedding light on sensitive issues in the collective memory of the local population. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Borneo's maritime history and the socio-political factors that shaped piracy during the colonial period, emphasizing the need for a new approach in studying the maritime world of the Indonesian archipelago, particularly the coastal areas of West Kalimantan.

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the socio-economic dynamics and the role of the sultanate in developing Karangantu Port as an international trade centre in Java. During the 16th-18th centuries, Karangantu Port played a role in replacing Malacca as the centre of trade in Southeast Asia. This study employs historical methods, including the heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography stages, supported by a socio-economic historical approach. The results of the study show that the strategic location of Karangantu Port and its well-organised infrastructure attracted foreign traders, making it a cosmopolitan trading centre. The rapid growth of trading activities at this port was supported by sultanate policies, such as free trade, infrastructure development, and diplomatic relations with other kingdoms. The livelihoods of the people of Banten, including farmers, fishermen, craftsmen, and traders, contributed to the port's economic growth. Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa's efforts to expand Banten's influence and prevent Dutch monopoly, although ultimately unsuccessful due to internal conflicts, demonstrate the port's importance in the regional maritime trade network. Banten's rise as an economic centre, facilitated by the growth of Karangantu Port, benefited the pepper trade as a major commodity, attracting foreign merchants. The development of this port was also influenced by the fall of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511, which diverted the spice trade route through the Sunda Strait. The role of Karangantu Port as an international transit port allowed traders from various countries and cultures to participate in trading activities, shaping the socio-economic landscape of the Sultanate of Banten from the 16th to 18th centuries AD.

Abstract

This article examines the participation of the Dutch East Indies in the 1903 Osaka Industrial Exhibition and analyzes how the exhibition functioned as a site of negotiation between colonial interests, imperial ambition, and representational politics in early twentieth-century Asia. The study analyzes the motivations behind the Indies' participation and the representation of “Indonesianness” amid colonial concern over Japan's rise. Using historical methods, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research finds that the motivation to participate in the exhibition was not only economic but also symbolic and diplomatic, as a Western power with a long history of friendship with Japan. At the same time, the exhibition, especially the Human Pavilion, revealed how Japan articulated its modern identity by adopting and modifying international exhibition practices previously developed in Europe. Through the Human Pavilion, Japan positioned itself differently from other Asian nations, including Java and Malay. This article argues that the Osaka Exhibition represented an early expression of a hierarchical worldview and colonial imagination that was in line with patterns later seen in Japanese imperial ideology, while also revealing the Dutch's ambiguous perception of Japan as both a modern partner and a potential threat to Western colonial domination in Asia.

Abstract

This paper explores the tradition of drinking Arabian spice coffee at Menara Layur Mosque in Kampung Melayu, Semarang, Indonesia, as a cultural practice rich in philosophical values that go beyond beverage consumption. The tradition, which takes place during Ramadan, symbolises brotherhood, togetherness and multicultural heritage in a region inhabited by Arabs, Chinese and Indians. Serving Arabian spice coffee with dates and snacks after breaking the fast strengthens social bonds within the Muslim community. From a spiritual perspective, Drinking Arabian spice coffee plays an important role in Islamic traditions, especially Sufi practices, to maintain consciousness during nightly worship. Using observation and critical history methods, this study found that this tradition embodies hospitality and respect in Arab and Islamic culture. However, preserving this tradition faces intergenerational challenges, with some younger members feeling less engaged or unfamiliar with the practice. This study aims to explore the symbolic meanings, cultural values, and preservation efforts of the Arabian spice coffee tradition at Layur Tower Mosque by using a qualitative approach and historical methods. The research findings highlight the harmonious blend of social, spiritual, and cultural values that make up the identity of the local community and the importance of maintaining this tradition as part of the local cultural heritage.
