Abstract

This study explored the dynamics of contemporary Islam in France as a representation of secular European countries through critical discourse analysis to examine the interaction between Islamic religious identity and the principles of secularism (laïcité). It is based on socio-cultural and political literature that highlights the increasing tension between the religious values of Muslims and the demands of citizenship in modern secular societies. Although numerous studies on secularism have been conducted, few have highlighted how Muslims in France experience and negotiate their religious identity under the pressure of state neutrality. This study aimed to analyze Muslim religious practices in the French secular context, identify the main challenges they face, and explore adaptation strategies to maintain religious identity while adjusting to secular values. Data was collected from international news reports discussing the banning of long clothing in schools, employment discrimination, and increasing anti-Muslim actions. The results demonstrated that public discourse in France frames Islam as a ‘potential threat’ to secularism, thereby legitimizing the state's restrictive policies and symbolic exclusion. However, Muslim communities continue to evidence resistance through selective adaptation and the preservation of religious practices in the private sphere. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between religion and politics in Europe and offer critical insights into cultural pluralism amid rising nationalism and rigid secularism.

Abstract

Previous studies using Vladimir Propp’s theory have largely concentrated on German and Indonesian folklore, leaving a significant research gap in the analysis of narrative structures and character roles within Arabic oral literature. This study aims to identify the 31 narrative functions and 7 character traits present in Yemeni folktale الملك و العرّاف. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method supported by library research to gather and process textual materials.. The result show that fourteen of Propp’s fourty-one narrative functions, spesifically α – Σ – γ – A – δ – D – T – Pr – Rs – H – W – Q – Q – W are present in the story. Only three of Propp’s seven-character categories appears in the narrative, namely the hero, villain, and helper. This research contributes to the field of Arabic narratology by providing a scientific record of Yemeni oral traditions and demonstrating that Propp’s structural patterns transcend cultural boundaries, thereby aiding in the preservation of Arab cultural heritage.

Abstract

Contemporary religiosity in Indonesia has experienced significant transformation along with the development of digital technology, popular culture, and social dynamics among young Muslims. This study aims to analyze new forms of Islamic expression such as digital da’wah, hijrah communities, Muslim fashion trends, and identity dilemmas within modern social interactions. A qualitative approach was applied through literature review and online observation (netnography) of da’wah content on social media and relevant scholarly sources. The data were analyzed using reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques based on Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The results indicate that young Muslims demonstrate adaptive and flexible religiosity, with social media serving as an effective creative platform for religious dissemination, while Islamic symbols appear through lifestyle practices including Muslim fashion and community activities. Nevertheless, challenges include the risk of religious commodification, simplification of teachings, and shifting authority from traditional scholars to digital figures. This study concludes that Islam in Indonesia functions as a dynamic socio-cultural practice that remains relevant to current youth demands while still requiring spiritual reinforcement to avoid becoming merely a cultural trend.

Abstract

The high number of cyberbullying in Indonesia is strongly influenced by the use of the internet which is increasing every year, especially among teenagers. In general, this action is carried out in various forms, whether on social media, online games, or platforms that provide columns for chatting. At the same time, the Koran records a number of incidents related to this phenomenon. The Qur'an does not explicitly mention the word cyberbullying, but in Surat al-Ḥujurāt verse 11 there is a word like yaskhar which means to make fun of and make fun of, then act arbitrarily or trouble other people. In particular, the main objective of this study is to explain how the contextual interpretation of QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]: 11 and its relation to the phenomenon of cyberbullying in the digitalization era. This research is included in the category of library research with a normative-historical approach. The analysis theory used is Abdullah Saeed's contextual hermeneutics. As a result of this study, it was found that the text and context of QS. al-Ḥujurāt [49]: 11 shows that bullying behavior during the time of the Prophet saw was the same as bullying. This verse was revealed as an order in the form of a prohibition or categorized as an instructional value verse. There are fundamental values contained in this verse, including: the value of justice, the value of humanity and the value of responsibility.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze gender bias in the lyrics of the song Talats Daqat using Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity as a critical linguistic approach. Butler’s theory posits that gender identity is not essential but is constructed through repeated social and cultural practices, including language and music. This qualitative research employs content analysis of the song lyrics as primary data, supported by a literature review on gender bias and performativity theory. The findings reveal that the lyrics of Talats Daqat represent gender bias both symbolically and structurally, positioning men as active subjects and women as passive objects. The application of Butler’s theory confirms that these representations are forms of gender performativity that reproduce and sustain gender inequality through popular cultural narratives. This research contributes by expanding the study of gender bias in Arabic through the integration of Butler’s critical theory and recommends the importance of critical approaches in Arabic language education to foster awareness of gender justice issues.

Abstract

This article examines the representation of Islamic identity in the poetry of Shihabuddin al-Marjani as presented in Mustafād al-Akhbār, employing a balāghah-based approach grounded in ʿilm al-maʿānī. The study addresses the limited scholarly attention given to rhetorical meaning (maʿnā) as a key mechanism through which Islamic identity is articulated in classical Muslim poetry within marginal socio-political contexts. The objective of this research is to explain how linguistic structures and rhetorical strategies in al-Marjani’s poetry convey Islamic values within the socio-political setting of the Volga-Tatar region. Methodologically, the study applies qualitative textual analysis to two selected poems that represent two distinct dimensions of identity construction: Islam as a constructive intellectual force and Islam as a historically wounded identity. The analysis focuses on major balāghī devices, including khabariyyah and insyāʾiyyah sentence structures, iltifāt, muqābalah, and taqdīm, examining their semantic and pragmatic functions. The findings reveal that these rhetorical devices are strategically employed to produce ethical, emotional, and symbolic meanings that reinforce Islamic consciousness amid cultural and colonial crises. This study contributes to Arabic literary studies and Islamic intellectual history by demonstrating the significance of ʿilm al-maʿānī in uncovering the ideological and identity-forming roles of poetry, particularly in non-Arab Islamic contexts under colonial pressure.

Abstract

The innovation of Arabic language learning has taken various forms, including the development of textbooks aimed at facilitating the learning process for students. One such innovative product is the 'Al-'Arobiyah Bain Yadaik' textbook, particularly its fourth series, which is utilized in qawaid learning at Ma'had Aly Ar Raayah. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method with a focus on field research. The primary objective is to comprehensively delineate the qawaid learning process using the mentioned textbook, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages. The qawaid learning process involves apperception, linking new material with previous knowledge, followed by an explanation of the title, practical examples, and detailed rule formulation. An apparent advantage of utilizing 'Al-'Arobiyah Bain Yadaik' is the abundance of practical examples that facilitate student comprehension of the material. However, a notable drawback is the limited theoretical explanations, necessitating additional input from the teacher. This research serves as a valuable resource for institutions considering the adoption of 'Al-'Arobiyah Bain Yadaik' as a teaching material for qawaid lessons, providing insights into the learning process and offering recommendations for improvement
