Abstract

This study investigates lexico-syntactic errors in Indonesian translations of English-language ELT journal abstracts, comparing outputs produced by human translators and AI-powered systems. The corpus consists of ten English abstracts and their corresponding translations, resulting in twenty texts analyzed in total. Human translations were prepared by graduate students trained in translation studies, while AI translations were generated automatically using neural machine translation tools. Each abstract was examined line by line, and translation segments were coded for lexical choice errors, syntactic errors, omissions, and additions. The analysis revealed sixteen dominant error instances, with human translations exhibiting a higher frequency of lexical and syntactic deviations, whereas AI translations were generally smoother but occasionally inaccurate in terminology and clause-level alignment. No omissions or additions were observed across the corpus, indicating that deviations were confined to word selection and sentence construction rather than content completeness. These findings highlight the importance of precise lexical choices and syntactic structuring in academic translation and emphasize the need for human post-editing when utilizing AI-assisted translation in the context of English Language Teaching.

Abstract

Todays globalization has changed the lifestyle of Indonesian Muslim women, especially in college. Islamic values have been many abandoned by them. For example, we can see the ethics in dress and wear of hijab that has been far from Islamic sharia. As a speech says "Hijabi but naked". Many muslimah who use hijab but the beauty of body can still be seen by others. As if the use of hijab just follow the trend. The most feared thing is when the concept arises that the hijab is not an obligation for muslimah. To uncover this, as an educator, researchers feel obligated to bring back the muslimah students in accordance with the teachings of our prophet, Muhammad SAW. So this article designed the English materials about how to dress a muslimah based on Sunnah. This is development research, but focused on the design stage. The study resulted in the design of a valid English material after validated by the expert.

Abstract

This research was conducted since there were many problems in listening comprehension which were correlated with students’ prior knowledge. There were some problems related to the students’ prior knowledge in comprehending the spoken text. Most of students were difficult to comprehend the spoken text. Some of students are not able to comprehend what the speaker said, although they have prior knowledge about the topic of spoken text. This research aimed to discover the correlation between students’ prior knowledge and listening comprehension. This research was a correlational research. The total of population was 310 students, the sample was 31 students which consisted of 3 or 2 students per class and the researcher used simple random sampling in determining the sample. The data were gotten from test about students’ prior knowledge and listening comprehension that the researcher distributed to students. To analyze the data, product moment Coefficient Correlation ( ρ ) was used to test the Hypothesis, this research used r-hitung formula and consult the result into r-table with α =0,05. From the analysis of the data, it was found that the coefficient of correlation gotten was 0.771 in the range 0.70-0.90 or was in high correlation. It means there was a positive correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension. In other words, the Ha which stated that there is significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension was accepted. In conclusion, there was high correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their listening comprehension, if the students had good prior knowledge it will increase their listening comprehension.

Abstract

The rapid globalization and digital transformation of healthcare require pharmacists to master professional communication and digital literacy alongside pharmacological expertise. Therefore, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), particularly English for Pharmacy (EfP), must integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to reflect authentic professional practices. This study aims to systematically examine how ICT is applied, perceived, and evaluated in EfP instruction within pharmacy education. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) analyzed 22 peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024, retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC, using keywords related to ICT, ESP, English for Pharmacy, and pharmacy education. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzed thematically. The review reveals three key findings. First, ICT integration in EfP has evolved from basic digital content delivery to student-centered models such as the Flipped Classroom, which consistently enhances learning outcomes and student satisfaction. Second, Mobile Learning is the most widely adopted technology, particularly effective in improving vocabulary mastery and professional communication skills. Third, successful ICT adoption is strongly influenced by UTAUT factors and supported by blended learning approaches, while major challenges include limited infrastructure, insufficient faculty training, and constraints on personalized feedback. This study contributes to ESP and pharmacy education by providing an evidence-based framework for strategic ICT integration in EfP, offering pedagogical guidance for educators and directions for future research, including the potential use of Artificial Intelligence in professional language instruction.

Abstract

Speaking skill is an essential component of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction in vocational education, particularly for Fashion Design students, as it supports effective communication in professional and workplace contexts. This study aims to explore students’ preferences regarding speaking activities and input types in ESP classes. The research employed a descriptive quantitative research design. Data were collected through a close-ended questionnaire administered to 67 students of the Fashion Design major at SMKN 2 Bukittinggi. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using percentage analysis. The findings reveal that role play was the most preferred speaking activity (47%), followed by question-and-answer activities (26%), indicating students’ strong preference for interactive and communicative tasks. In terms of input types, authentic audiovisual materials (39%) were most favored, followed by picture-supported monologues (30%) and vocabulary-supported monologues (27%). Additionally, most students preferred medium-length texts (56%), materials sequenced from easy to difficult (57%), and learning materials accompanied by illustrations or tables (80%).These results suggest that ESP speaking materials for vocational learners should be interactive, multimodal, and contextually relevant. This study provides practical implications for ESP teachers and material developers in designing speaking materials that better address the needs of Fashion Design students in vocational education.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot are increasingly used in academic writing and offer both benefits and challenges for EFL learners. While these tools can support language development, concerns remain regarding students’ independence and academic integrity. This study examines the use of AI across different stages of writing and explores its perceived benefits and limitations among sixth semester English students at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. A mixed methods convergent design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through a validated questionnaire from 88 students, while qualitative data were obtained from in depth interviews with 10 selected participants and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that AI was widely used during pre writing and brainstorming (85 percent), drafting (92 percent), and revision (78 percent). Students reported improvements in grammar, organization, and vocabulary, with grammar receiving the highest mean score of 4.2 out of 5. However, 35 percent of participants admitted to copying AI generated content without proper paraphrasing, highlighting potential ethical concerns. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating digital literacy and ethical guidance in the use of AI for academic writing.

Abstract

This study investigated the way in which EFL teachers perceived the quality of translations made by students using Google Translate and digital dictionaries in actual classroom situations. While previous studies on the use of such tools have not sufficiently addressed the issue of evaluation from the perspective of the teacher, this study adopted an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. In this study, 25 students performed translations using the two instruments, and their translations were rated by two EFL teachers based on a Likert-scale rubric on accuracy, fluency, and appropriacy. Results from the quantitative analysis showed that translation through digital dictionaries was rated higher compared to Google Translate with a mean difference of 4.84 (t(24) = -9.333, p < .001, d = 1.87, very large effect). Analysis of themes in the interviews shed light on this result since both teachers rated accuracy as the first factor and appropriateness and fluency as the second and third factors, respectively. Google Translate was used due to its ability to produce fluent translation and draft texts but not contextually appropriate and accurate. Unlike the digital dictionary, which promoted greater cognitive processing and careful consideration in word choice, an alternative strategy is suggested: the use of Google Translate to produce a first draft and then the digital dictionary to ensure correct word choice and accurate semantics prior to final submission.
