Abstract

Lombok island is a piece of paradise rich in tradition and culture. The practiced tradition that still exists in Lombok is Rebo Bontong Tradition; it is especially practiced by the people around the coastal area of ​​Tanjung Menangis, Pringgabaya, East Lombok. In the present time, the development of modern technology has touched and influenced society, which has become a challenge for the community to maintain and preserve the existing values ​​or culture. The tradition of Rebo Bontong in practice in the past was different from what it is now. The previous tradition merely focused on worship without any entertainment elements in it; at the present, it is functioning as entertainment. Related to those notions, the problem arises are the current traditions and values of the Rebo Bontong ritual are eroded by the influence of modernization or are still the same. Therefore, this study aims to redefine the meaning of each value in the Rebo Bontong tradition as an effort to maintain the existence of traditional cultural meanings from generation to generation. This research is qualitative research using an ethnographic method approach that aims to study, describe, analyze and interpret the cultural patterns of an ethnic group in terms of behavior, beliefs, language, and shared views. This research was conducted at Ketapang Beach, Tanjung Menangis, Pringgabaya District, and East Lombok Regency. The results showed that the ritual symbolized the new meanings; they are (1) a symbol of intergenerational unity and (2) a symbol of environmental harmony and moral values as well as customs within the framework of religious culture. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of refusal politeness strategies used by or towards the main characters in ‘It Starts with Us’ a novel that was published in late 2022 by Colleen Hoover, which was a sequel for the previous book by the same author titled ‘It Ends with Us’. To reveal the refusal politeness strategies, the researcher decided to use the politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987), and the data were then analyzed by using qualitative descriptive. The result of this research were the 9 data , which contained the refusal politeness strategies. All nine of the data mentioned in this study are direct refusal,with predominantly positive politeness strategies, with six of nine data being positive politeness strategies, but the variety employed varied. The remaining three data were negative politeness strategies, which is composed of two indirect strategies and an apology.

Abstract

This study aims to enhance English grammar learning among high school students by utilizing songs as an educational tool. The study addresses the issues of low motivation and the challenges students face in learning English grammar, often attributed to monotonous and non-contextual teaching methods. Conducted at SMAN 1 Gerung, West Lombok Regency, this community service activity involved a team of lecturers from Bumigora University. The methodology comprised planning, implementation, and evaluation phases. During the implementation stage, learning materials were presented using PowerPoint, followed by creating song lyrics from the studied sentences. Evaluations revealed improved student understanding of basic grammar, a more enjoyable learning environment, and increased motivation. These findings suggest that incorporating songs into grammar instruction can enhance learning effectiveness and boost student motivation.

Abstract

Abstrak: Computational thinking (CT) adalah konsep berpikir secara komputasi dalam menyelesaikan suatu permasalahan. Metode pembelajaran dalam CT meliputi 4 pilar utama yaitu: Dekomposisi, Abstraksi, Algoritma dan Pengenalan Pola. CT melatih siswa untuk berpikir komputasi ketika memecahkan permasalahan soal di semua bidang ilmu. Berpikir Komputasi adalah proses berpikir yang terlibat dalam merumuskan masalah dan mengungkapkan solusinya seperti pada sebuah komputer dimana manusia atau mesin yang penyelesaian masalaha dilaksanakan secara efektif. Metode pembelajaran CT membentuk siswa untuk kreatif dan inovatif, serta mampu berkomunikasi dan berkolaborasi. Saat ini CT tidak hanya bisa diterapkan di bidang ilmu teknik informastika, tetapi sudah bisa diintegrasikan dengan bidang ilmu lain seperti bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris, Matematika dan IPA. Program kegitan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini melakukan pengenalan konsep CT bagi guru-guru MI dan MTs yang ada di Pondok Pesantren Nurul Islam – Pagesangan, Mataram. Dengan harapan para guru dapat memasukkan CT ke dalam mata pelajaran yang diajarkan, sehingga siswa terbiasa dengan pemecahan masalah melalui cara computational thinking, kelangsungan hidup computational thinking, suatu masalah dapat diselesaikan dengan baik, cepat dan optimal. Abstract: Computational thinking (CT) is the concept of thinking computationally in solving a problem. The learning method in CT includes 4 main pillars, namely: Decomposition, Abstraction, Algorithm and Pattern Recognition. CT trains students to think computationally when solving problems in all fields of science. Computational Thinking is a thought process involved in formulating a problem and expressing its solution as in a computer where a human or machine problem solving is carried out effectively. The CT learning method shapes students to be creative and innovative, and able to communicate and collaborate. Currently CT can not only be applied in the field of informatics engineering, but can be integrated with other fields of science such as Indonesian, English, Mathematics and Science. This community service activity program introduces the concept of CT for MI and MTs teachers at Nurul Islam Islamic Boarding School - Pagesangan, Mataram. With the hope that teachers can incorporate CT into the subjects being taught, so that students get used to solving problems through computational thinking, the survival of computational thinking, a problem can be resolved properly, effectively and optimally.

Abstract

Demonstratives in Chinese and Sasak languages have semantically and syntactically significant different concepts. Semantically, The Chinese language applies a two-way system consisting of proximal ‘zhe/zh’e and distal ‘na/nei’while Sasak language particularly the Menu-Meni dialect uses a three-way system including proximal‘ne’, medial‘tie’, and distal‘nu’. Syntactically, demonstrative in Chinese is categorized into five subtypes: pronominal, adnominal, locational, temporal, manner, and degree. Sasak, on the other hand, includes pronominal, adnominal, identificational, adverbial, verbal, quantificational, and referential. This paper shows that the Chinese and Sasak languages has semantically similar in the concept of proximity and different in medial and distal one. Syntactically, these languages have nominal and adverbial demonstrative which share similar properties but differ in other demonstrative categorizations. Demonstratif dalam bahasa Cina dan bahasa Sasak memiliki perbedaan konsep yang signifikan secara semantik dan sintaksis. Secara semantik, bahasa Cina menerapkan sistem dua arah yang terdiri dari proksimal 'zhe/zh'e dan distal 'na/nei' sedangkan bahasa Sasak khususnya dialek Menu-Meni menggunakan sistem tiga arah meliputi proksimal 'ne', medial 'tie', dan distal 'nu'. Secara sintaksis, demonstratif dalam bahasa Cina dikategorikan menjadi lima subtipe: pronominal, adnominal, locational, temporal, Manner, dan degree. Sasak, di sisi lain, memiliki pronominal, adnominal, identificational, adverbial, verbal, Quantifier, referential. Tulisan ini menunjukkan bahwa bahasa Cina dan bahasa Sasak secara semantik memiliki kesamaan dalam konsep proximity dan berbeda dalam konsep medial dan distal. Secara sintaksis, bahasa-bahasa ini memiliki demonstratif nominal dan adverbial dengan ciri yang sama tetapi berbeda dalam kategorisasi demonstratif lainnya.

Abstract

A Through language, we can see someone’s behaviour from their way of speaking. The way speakers behave well can be achieved by paying attention to important aspects of communication; this is called the politeness strategy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the politeness strategies in the ELF interaction of Indonesian students—lecturers both online and offline in the classroom. This study aimed to collect, analyse, and interpret the data that was collected through the WhatsApp application and student-lecturer interaction in the classroom. A descriptive-qualitative method was used to find out the politeness strategy used in EFL interactions with Indonesian students and lecturers. There were four politeness strategies used by students and lecturers, such as the positive politeness strategy, the negative politeness strategy, the bald on record strategy, and the off-record strategy. The positive politeness strategy was found to be the most frequent strategy used in student and lecturer interaction in WhatsApp groups and classrooms. The most frequent strategies used by students and lecturers in their interaction were politeness strategies such as greetings, using in-group identity markers, seeking an agreement, offering promises, being optimistic, and giving gifts.

Abstract

Lingual or language is an integral part of the cultural expression of a society, is used as a means of communicating values, beliefs and customs, has an important social function and fosters a sense of group identity and solidarity. Traditional Balinese snacks for the Cemagi Village society are not just food but also have an important role as a means of traditional ceremonies. A linguistic anthropology approach was used by researchers to reveal the culture of the Cemagi people, in the process of inheriting and passing on the role of traditional snacks in their beliefs as Hindus. It is hoped that the role of traditional snacks can be learned, inherited, passed on from one generation to the next, through actions in the form of face-to-face interactions, and of course through linguistic communication, both verbal and non-verbal. -verbal form. The proposed research is to find out how traditional food exists and to know the lexicon of traditional snacks and their meaning in a traditional ceremony. There were 12 lexicons found in this first research and explained in terms of processing processes and fields of meaning in the beliefs of the Cemagi society. Traditional snacks are used as the main filling material and function as a means in traditional ceremonial processions. Traditional snacks are symbolic and expressive, both in terms of shape, ingredients and taste.

Abstract

The linguistic situation a group of people is influenced by linguistic aspects and context. This research was conducted to see the Balinese speakers' diglossia, among teens of Balinese and the factors that influence the situation. Ethnic Balinese in the city of Mataram, have the ability to speak Balinese (B1), Sasak (B2) and Indonesian (B3). Teens of Balinese in Mataram have a high mobility, interacting with various speech partners with different backgrounds and domains. That affects the choice of language based on domain factors, participant, speech event and topic. This situation is interesting topic to study using the Sociolinguistic studies. This study identifies the factors that influence the choice of language by Balinese speakers, especially teens of Balinese in a speech event in a particular domain. This research is a qualitative study used the data were collected using the methods and techniques: Survey, interview and observation. The sample used was 30 teens of Balinese aged 18-25 years who lived in the city of Mataram. The findings out the research revealed. First: the language situation of Balinese speakers of Mataram city becomes the background there is a process of language choice B1, B2 or B3. Second: This study conducted observations in four domains: family, friendship, education and vogue. Third: This research finding three main factors as influencing the choice of speakers' language in social interactions : (1) time and place; (2) participans in the interaction, (3) and topic in the speech event.

Abstract

Abstract Banjar Tegal Gundul as tourist villages in the province of Bali, which visits by foreign and domestic tourists. Every years the number of foreign and domestic tourists to the Banjar Tegal Bald is increases. This situation makes the tourism sector as the main livelihood of local people. That's condition become the background of this research, they are: 1) to understand how to influence tourist entities to the English language skills of local people in Banjal Tegal Gundul and 2) how language attitude of local society towards English. The research uses the method of observation and questionnaire submitted to 24 respondents, who are local people as workers and business owners in the area. This study is found that the language functions used by local people to communicate with foreign tourists is: Greetings, Offering, asking for information, giving information, Saying Like, Giving an opinion, persuading, asking someone to do something, Accepting invitations, apologizing, persuading, and saying / returning thanks. The sentences are used in grammatical rules in English. The language attitudes towards English seen from the cogBanjar Tegal Gundul is one of the tourist villages in the village area of ​​Tibubeneng, North Kuta, Badung, Bali, which receives visits by foreign and domestic tourists. Every year the number of foreign and domestic tourist arrivals to the Banjar Tegal Gundul region has increased. The situation makes the tourism sector as the main livelihood of the local community Banjar Tegal Gundul. The situation is the background of this research, namely: 1) to find out how the influence of foreign tourist entities on the English language ability of local people in Banjar Tegal Gundul and 2) how the attitude of the local people's language towards English. The research uses the method of observation and distributes questionnaires to 24 respondents, who are local people as workers and business owners who are in the area of ​​the area. The step taken in this study is to analyze the language functions used by local people when communicating with foreign tourists. The results obtained in this study indicate that local people are able to communicate with foreign tourists, by using language functions such as: Greeting, Offering, asking for information, giving information, Saying Like, Giving opinion, persuading, asking someone to do something, Accepting invitation, apologizing, persuading, and saying / reply to thank. The sentences are used in accordance with grammatical rules in English. For language attitudes towards English seen from the cognitive, affective and conative components, showing positive language attitudes by local people towards English. That is because the equality of local people's thought orientation will benefit from English, for the livelihoods of local people, both in terms of workers or business owners in the Banjar Tegal Gundul region.
