Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a difference in students' vocabulary mastery when taught using video and picture. The researcher in this study utilized a variety of videos instead of just focusing on one type, which differentiates it from the previous study. The goal of this study is to compare the students’ learning outcomes who were taught using video and using picture. SMP Negeri 14 Banjarbaru is where this study was conducted. In this study, a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental design were applied. VIII C was designated as the experimental group, whereas VIII D was designated as the control group. The results of this study revealed that the experimental class's pre-test mean score was 71,1 and their post-test score was 82,6. Meanwhile, the pre-test mean score for students in the control group was 65,1 and the mean post-test score was 65,7. The researcher calculated the data using SPSS 26.0 and discovered that the Mann- Whitney U Test had an Asymptotic.Significance (2-tailed) is 0.04, indicating that it was lesser than 0.05. Therefore, it can be stated that there is a difference between students' vocabulary mastery taught using video and using picture, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. As a result, it is possible to assume that the use of video as a teaching and learning media at SMP Negeri 14 Banjarbaru gave more effect in terms of students' vocabulary mastery than picture. The researcher advises English teachers to utilize videos into their lesson plans and to combine two or three different types of media to make their lessons more engaging and enjoyable for the students. As for future researchers, the researcher suggested conducting research in the same topic using more advanced and modern audio-visual media and visual media.

Abstract

Several studies have highlighted the importance of language learning strategies (LLS) for second and foreign-language learners. These strategies have played a significant role in distinguishing between more successful and less successful language learners. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought about unprecedented changes in the teaching-learning process, with a shift towards online platforms. This study aimed to determine what language learning strategies were applied by the 85 learners of the Mathematics and Biology Departments, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) learners taking English courses during and after the pandemic. In addition, this study also investigated whether there are any similarities or differences in the language learning strategies employed by using comparative design. To collect data, the researcher utilized the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning from Oxford (1990), translated into Indonesian, to ensure clear comprehension among the learners. Descriptive statistics for means and standard deviations were then used to analyze the data. The analysis revealed that, regardless of the circumstances, the students applied all strategies in their learning. Then, they consistently applied the metacognitive and memory strategies more frequently than others.Additionally, the findings indicated that the students utilized the social strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the affective strategy was employed somewhat in the post-pandemic period. The outcomes of this study have significant implications as they raise awareness among learners and ESP instructors about the benefits of employing language learning strategies. Recognizing and utilizing these strategies can significantly enhance language learning outcomes. By understanding the preferred strategies employed by students during different periods, instructors can tailor their teaching approaches accordingly to maximize the effectiveness of language instruction.

However, many children perceive English as a difficult and intimidating subject. To introduce English in an enjoyable manner to children, it is necessary to have learning media that captivate, excite, and motivate them to learn. Considering this, a community service activity is carried out. Additionally, this service is also conducted to provide training on creating media to target partners and the application of these media in teaching to make the English learning environment enjoyable, avoiding boredom and monotony through attractive and interesting learning media. The target partners in this community service activity are four English teachers who teach at the Transmigration English Village in the Karang Indah Village, Barito Kuala Regency. This activity uses the Community Based Research (CBR) method, to address real problems and offer solutions to the issues faced by the community, specifically in creating affordable and easily producible English learning media for teachers. The activity includes planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. The results of this community service show that the teachers can understand the process of creating and subsequently producing the learning media they have been trained for. Moreover, they also know how to use these media in English teaching. Through classroom observations, it was noted that 100% of students actively participated in English learning and were more motivated.

Abstract

This inquiry aimed to explore and make sense of the stories of an English language teacher’s experiences using the CEFR framework to design the DI of speaking activity instruction. More specifically, the research was intended to understand the usage of CEFR in designing differentiated learning of speaking activity instruction. To achieve the purpose of the research, a narrative inquiry is employed. One English language teacher at a junior high school in Indonesia participated in this research and shared her experience using CEFR as a tool for designing differentiated learning. The data were collected through the online interview to collect information from the teacher's Zoom application and analyzed qualitatively in steps. The findings showed that in narrative research, limited attention has been paid to how English teachers constructed their differentiated teaching-speaking instruction through a CEFR framework. this narrative inquiry indicated that CEFR accommodated students’ needs and fostered students’ competencies, effectively designing differentiated teaching and speaking instruction. English teachers had different stories in constructing differentiated instruction (DI) tailored to different learner needs within the CEFR framework.

Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill that cannot be learned quickly but through a process requiring time, energy, and effort. To accelerate the development of speaking skills, English learners, such as those in senior high school, frequently participate in learning communities, such as Community of Practice. Several studies related to community of practices have been conducted, which reported teacher learning community and learning with peers. However, there is a scarce discussion on the concept of a Community of Practice for learning English-speaking skills. Therefore, this research investigated whether the English Club supports students’ speaking skills. The research methodology used in this study is Narrative Inquiry. The subjects of the research were the students and the coach. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin. The Researcher employed instruments such as observation checklists and interview guidelines. The findings of the study showed that the English Club at SMA Negeri 6 Banjarmasin supports students in developing their speaking skills. The English Club is a community of students who actively practice using English for communication. The club supports informal learning, focusing on developing public speaking skills through storytelling, speech, and debate. The club's activities are designed to enhance students' fluency and pronunciation.
