Abstract

One of the treatments for diabetes mellitus disease is to control blood sugar level using an inhibitor of α-glucosidase enzyme. The methanol extracts of the fruit, stem, and leaves of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa were found significant in inhibiting α-glucosidase with an IC50 value of 20.57, 20.36 and 43.99 μg/mL respectively. The ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions from the methanol extract of R. tomentosa fruit exhibited the potent inhibition (IC50 13.49 and 19.29 μg/mL) compare to acarbose and n-hexane fraction (IC50 383.68 and 1175.16 μg/mL). A leptospermone derivative, rhodomyrtosone D, was isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of R. tomentosa fruit. The structure of rhodomyrtosone D was identified based on spectroscopic analysis, as well as comparing with literature data. The α-glucosidase inhibition of rhodomyrtosone D (IC50 110.45 μg/mL) was 3.5 fold more potent than acarbose. Thus, R. tomentosa plant could be potential as a natural resource of α-glucosidase inhibitor.

Abstract

A bulbil, as planting material, is difficult to stimulate to grow in a dormant state. This study examines the hydropriming effect on shoot emergence and the shading treatments on leaf and cormel growth during the vegetative stage. The priming was carried out by soaking the bulbils in distilled water for 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours and the shading treatments at 0, 40, and 80 percent. The results show that the imbibition occurred immediately during the first 3 hours and continued to increase up to 24 hours. The bulbil re-drying process reached the pre-treatment water content in less than three days. Significantly the earlier emergence was observed in the plants exposed to the 80% shading. The petiole sheath breakup was not affected by the hydropriming and shading. The konjac planted in the shading treatment produced more sprouts, longer but slender petioles, larger but thinner leaves, and larger cormel size. The differences in fresh and dry weight were more related to tuber moisture content than the direct effect of the shading treatment. The SPAD value of konjac leaves immediately increased within a few days after the application of the NPK fertilizer and consistently lasted for four weeks.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of tropical plants against bacteria that cause pneumonia. The initial stage is to prepare samples of tropical plants that are macerated with methanol and produce a thick extract, namely 38.3881 grams of noni fruit with a yield of 13.422%, and cajuput leaves as much as 11.211 grams with a yield of 3.38%. The next step, each sample was fractionated using VLC then produced ethyl acetate fraction and methanol fraction. Bacterial activity test was carried out by disc diffusion method, and the MIC value was determined by liquid dilution method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Based on the results of antibacterial testing, the noni fruit extract and cajuput  extract obtained the most active fraction in response to inhibiting bacteria causing pneumonia (S. pneumonia, S. aureus and K. pneumoniae) was the ethyl acetate fraction with a strong average response zone of inhibition up to very strong with MIC value of ethyl acetate fraction from noni fruit extract 6250 ppm each and MIC value of ethyl acetate fraction from cajuput extract (Melaleuca leucadendra) 390.625 ppm each; 390.625 ppm; and 195.3125 ppm.
