Abstract

Abstract

This study identifies the problems faced by the residents of Banyuurip village and their adaptation efforts in preserving their mangrove areas. This paper aims to portray the community behavior dynamic in conserving the environment in line with the growth of pop culture in the social media era. Three components will be examined: first, the way people behave toward their environment; second, the economic pressure and the resources maximizing process, and the last component being the environmental issues that are framed in local political ecology. This paper uses the following five phases identified by the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF): identifying vulnerabilities in the community, mapping the livelihood assets of the community, observing the transformation of structures and processes, identifying strategies implemented by the community, and formulating solutions. The SLF approach is useful for removing traditional barriers and is able to evaluate and modify the approach taken to follow the latest trends in society, by enriching the information gathered through this participation. This paper’s findings maintain that the mangrove conservation area in Banyuurip Village reassures the community of its potential use as conservation land and an alternative source of livelihood. However, the manpower required to conserve the mangrove consists mainly of senior residents and is partially supported by the younger generation. Conserving mangroves requires a lot of funds and is an arduous process. It requires support from several parties, such as local companies, mining companies, universities, government agencies, and others.

Abstract

Current waste management practices often lack the reduce, reuse, and recycle principles, leading to negative effects on public health and the environment. Comprehensive and integrated waste management is needed to achieve economic benefits, health for communities, and environmental safety. This study examines community-based sustainable waste management practices in academic institutions, thus bridging the theory-practice gap and providing a significant novelty through its integration of Sharia principles into waste management practices. It focuses on the revitalization of the Sharia-based Waste Bank (BSS) at Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) in Surabaya, Indonesia, supporting the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and implementing quality waste management. A mixed-methods approach was employed that included surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews to assess the current waste management situation and stakeholders’ perceptions of it, as well as potential strategies for waste bank revitalization. The findings reveal a lack of awareness of and participation in sustainable practices in the campus community. It underscores the importance of integrating awareness, regulatory compliance, and community engagement as innovative approaches to waste management. This study further provides a community-based waste management model through the revitalization of BSS at UINSA, supporting the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability and implementing quality waste management. This study contributes to enhancing waste management practices at the UINSA and its surrounding communities while aligning with global sustainability goals.

Abstract

The problem of poverty is still an important part of macroeconomic discussions. Indicators of the welfare of a country can be measured, one of which is by the variable poverty. The increase or decrease in poverty in Indonesia is an achievement in the world of economic development. Some assumptions suggest that this level of poverty cannot be eliminated as a whole. This study will answer the effect of ZIS, Inflation, and Gini Ratio fund disbursements on the Depth of Poverty in the last decade. This research uses a descriptive quantitative approach by using secondary data each semester derived from the publications of Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), Bank Indonesia (BI), and Badan Amil Zakat Nasional (BAZNAS). The purpose of this study is to provide empirical evidence related to the Effect of ZIS Fund Disbursement, Inflation, and Gini Ratio on Poverty Depth Level. This study used a multiple linear regression analysis method. The results showed that ZIS and Inflation Fund Disbursements did not have a significant effect on the Poverty Depth Level. Meanwhile, the Gini ratio variable has a significant effect on the depth of poverty.

Abstract

Baladaun Conservation is a customary forest in Tosari Village, Pasuruan, managed collectively by the Tengger community as an expression of ecological stewardship and spiritual responsibility. Rooted in an eco-theological worldview, nature is regarded as a sacred trust linking humans, the environment, and the divine. Despite its strong ecological and cultural potential for educational tourism, the community faces challenges in institutional capacity, marketing, halal certification, and product distribution. This community service program applies the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach to strengthen local economic capacity through participatory asset mapping, stakeholder engagement, and capacity-building initiatives. The program outcomes demonstrate measurable improvements. A total of 17 community members are now actively involved in tourism services, while 12 local producers engage in value-added processing of coffee and honey. Approximately 35% of participating households reported additional income sources beyond traditional agriculture. Digital promotion increased outreach, generating over 1,200 online interactions, while several enterprises successfully obtained Business Identification Numbers (NIB) and initiated halal certification. In addition, conservation efforts included the planting of 500 tree seedlings and the establishment of waste management practices. These results indicate enhanced economic diversification, improved institutional capacity, strengthened market access, and reinforced environmental conservation based on Tengger cultural value

Abstract

This study examines how sanitation, cultural sensitivity, and tourism policy intersect within community-based tourism (CBT) in East Java, Indonesia, and Western Australia. At its heart, the research seeks practical ways to improve sanitation infrastructure while honoring local cultures and safeguarding the environment—an effort that contributes to ongoing conversations about building truly sustainable tourism. Using a qualitative approach, the study looks closely at public policies, challenges on the ground, and best practices that shape sanitation in CBT settings. Case studies from East Java and Western Australia provide a comparative lens, highlighting both the shared struggles and unique solutions emerging from different contexts. Data were gathered through policy documents, interviews with decision-makers, and direct field observations to capture both structural frameworks and lived experiences. The findings reveal that in Indonesia, efforts to integrate traditional knowledge with modern sanitation practices show promise, but issues of access and long-term maintenance remain pressing. In contrast, Australia demonstrates how consistent attention to hygiene, accessibility, and sustainability can set a strong standard for CBT sanitation. The study underscores that effective sanitation is never the task of a single actor—it depends on collaboration between governments, private partners, and local communities. Lessons from both contexts highlight the value of cross-cultural exchange, policy alignment, and technology in reducing gaps in infrastructure and service delivery. Ultimately, fostering inclusive and sustainable sanitation in CBT requires more than facilities: it calls for policy reforms rooted in cultural respect, investment in green technologies, and the empowerment of communities to lead change. Future research should continue to explore creative solutions that keep sanitation excellence at the center of community-based tourism, ensuring that local well-being and visitor experience advance hand in hand.

Abstract

Prologue: The blue economy has attracted increasing global attention as a strategic framework for achieving sustainable development, particularly in coastal and marine resource-rich countries. In Nigeria, however, the development of the blue economy remains constrained by weak institutional governance, environmental degradation, limited financial inclusion, and inadequate long-term investment mechanisms. Existing development approaches largely rely on conventional economic models that insufficiently address the ethical, social, and ecological dimensions of marine sustainability. Objective: This study aims to examine how Islamic economic principles can contribute to the development of a more sustainable, inclusive, and ethically grounded blue economy framework in Nigeria. Methods: The study employs a qualitative conceptual approach grounded in an extensive review of scholarly literature, policy documents, and institutional reports on the blue economy, Islamic economics, sustainable finance, and marine governance. An integrated analytical framework is developed, grounded in maqāṣid al-sharīʿah as the normative foundation, supported by Islamic financial and social finance instruments, such as blue sukuk and waqf. Results/Findings: The findings indicate that conventional financing mechanisms alone are insufficient to address the multidimensional challenges of Nigeria’s blue economy. The integration of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah provides an ethical and sustainability-oriented framework that aligns economic development with environmental stewardship and social welfare. Furthermore, blue sukuk has significant potential as a long-term financing instrument for marine infrastructure and environmental projects, while waqf contributes to community-based empowerment, enhanced coastal welfare, and inclusive economic participation. Contribution: This study contributes to the growing discourse on Islamic sustainable finance by proposing an integrated Islamic blue economy framework that combines ethical governance, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development. It also offers policy-relevant insights for governments, Islamic financial institutions, and development agencies seeking alternative financing models for sustainable marine economic transformation in emerging economies.
