Abstract

Stunting remains one of Indonesia’s major chronic nutritional problems and poses a serious threat to human resource development, particularly in vulnerable regions such as Maros Regency. Stunting reflects long-term nutritional deficiencies during the critical period of the first 1,000 days of life and is associated with adverse consequences on physical growth, cognitive development, health status, and future productivity. Data indicate that the prevalence of stunting in the working area of the Marusu Health Center increased to 4.1% in 2024, highlighting the need for more effective preventive strategies that address not only biological and nutritional factors but also behavioral and communicative aspects. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between interpersonal communication and stunting prevention and management behaviors at the Marusu Health Center, Maros Regency. An analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study population consisted of 284 mothers with stunted children in the Marusu Health Center area. Based on sampling criteria and data collection during the study period, a total of 96 respondents were included in the final analysis using accidental sampling. Primary data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from the Marusu Health Center and the local Health Office. Data analysis was conducted using Chi-Square tests and multivariate logistic regression to identify significant associations between variables. The results showed that interpersonal communication was significantly associated with awareness, motivation, intention, and preventive practices related to stunting prevention. However, no significant relationship was found between interpersonal communication and sociocultural factors (p = 0.629). These findings indicate that effective interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in shaping preventive behaviors, even when sociocultural influences remain unchanged. Strengthening communication competencies among health workers and Posyandu (community health post) cadres, as well as implementing family-based counseling programs, is therefore essential. Future studies are recommended to expand the research area, increase the number of respondents, and apply longitudinal approaches to better understand the long-term effects of communication-based stunting prevention interventions.

Abstract

The Dengue Virus causes Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Based on data from the Bantaeng Regency Health Office, Bonto Sunggu Village reported the highest number of DHF cases in Bantaeng Regency in 2023, with 10 cases. This study aims to determine the density of Aedes aegypti larvae using entomological indicators and to determine the factors that influence larval density. This type of research employs a cross-sectional study design. The population in this study was all containers in Bonto Sunggu Village, Bantaeng Regency. The sampling technique employed was simple random sampling. The number of samples was 100 containers located inside and outside the houses. The data analysis method used a bivariate test with a chi-square test. From the research results, it was found that the density level and risk of dengue fever transmission in Bonto Sunggu Village were still high, there was a significant relationship between the type of container with p value = 0.000, the location of the container with p value = 0.000 and the presence of a cover with p value = 0.000 on the density of Aedes aegypti larvae and there was no significant relationship between the container material with p value = 0.749, the color of the container with p value = 0.382 on the density of Aedes aegypti larvae.

Abstract

The coastal areas of the Makassar Strait are rich in fishery resources, one of which is the bakalang shellfish. However, this area is at risk of pollution due to complex activities, such as industrial, fishery, port, and household activities, which are factors that contribute to pollution. This study aims to determine the environmental health risks due to cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) content in bakalang clams (Marcia Hiantina) in the waters of Lantebung Bira, Makassar City, in 2025. The type of research used is descriptive observational. Samples were taken at six points, with one sample taken at each point using selected sampling, considering the level of pollution in the area that could cause Cd and Cr to be present in the waters. The tools used were a knife, scales, measuring flask, filter paper, porcelain dish, and AAS equipment, while the materials used were clam meat, distilled water, and HNO3. The results of heavy metal content testing in shellfish showed that out of six locations, only one location had chromium (Cr) levels exceeding the maximum limit set by the Hong Kong Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Ordinance 1997, indicating potential pollution from various human activities such as shipping lanes, industrial waste, settlements, and the use of anti-rust paint and marine lubricants. Meanwhile, cadmium (Cd) levels at all points were still below safe limits, but caution is still warranted given the accumulative nature of Cd in biota tissue.

Abstract

Groundwater is widely used in Indonesia because it is readily available and generally considered of better quality. Groundwater is used for various purposes, such as household, agricultural, and industrial needs. This study aims to determine the quality of drilled well water based on the iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) metal content consumed by residents of Polewali Village, South Baebunta District, North Luwu Regency. This is an observational study with a descriptive approach. The study population consisted of six drilled wells that served as water sources for the community. The results showed that of the six drilled wells examined, three contained no Fe, while the other three contained Fe at varying concentrations. Meanwhile, Mn was detected in all well water samples from the drilled wells. These findings indicate that the quality of drilled well water in Polewali Village varies between locations, with Fe content undetectable in some locations but relatively high in others, and Mn content found in all samples. Therefore, regular water quality monitoring and well water treatment are necessary, especially in locations where metal levels exceed quality standards, to ensure community water safety.

Abstract

Vocabulary learning is an important aspect in improving students’ speaking skills (maharah kalam). However, many students still face difficulties in understanding and using Arabic vocabulary orally because learning activities are often focused only on memorization. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in improving students’ speaking skills through vocabulary learning. The objectives of this study were to describe the implementation of the TPR method, identify its effectiveness, and analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors in its application. This study used a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design, supported by qualitative data obtained through observation and interviews. The sample consisted of 31 intensive class students at Ma’had Ar-Rahmah Tahfidz Malang. Previous studies have shown that the TPR method is effective in improving language skills, especially for beginner learners. The results showed an improvement in students’ average scores from 52.74 in the pretest to 82.42 in the posttest. In addition, the paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (Sig < 0.05), indicating that the TPR method was effective in improving students’ speaking skills through vocabulary learning.
