Abstract

Aphis craccivora is one of the important pests on yard long bean. It causes direct damage and also has an indirect effect as insect vector of the Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). The research was done to test the effectiveness of chitosan in suppressing aphid population growth, feeding preference and its ability in transmiting BCMV. Chitosan with concentration ranging of 0.1–1.0% were applied on leaves using spraying method at 1 day before BCMV transmission. BCMV was transmitted by using 3 individuals of viruliferous aphids on each plant. Results show that chitosan treatments on leaves or plants significantly suppressed the population and feeding preferences of A. craccivora. Further, treated plants showed lower disease incidence, severity and BCMV titre significantly compared with untreated control plants. The positive effects of chitosan in suppressing population growth as feeding preferences and BCMV transmission might be due to the anti-feedant effect of chitosan on A. craccivora. Based on the result, chitosan at concentration 0.9% is the most effective concentration in suppressing BCMV and its vector A. craccivora.

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Spodoptera: Noctuidae) is an invasive pests of maize that has been reported around the world. Control efforts using biological agents continue to be developed, including the use of entomopathogen bacteria such as Bacillus thuringiensis. To boost the efficacy and efficiency of biological control, formulations are required. The objective of this study was to develop biopesticide formulations and evaluate their efficacy. The research was carried out by formulating B. thuringiensis strain BtJ2 (1010 cfu mL -1) in liquid and paste formulations. The effectiveness of the formulations was evaluated using the feed dipping method. The results showed that paste formulations at a concentration of 10% caused 100% mortality, whereas the liquid formulation resulted in 85% mortality. The LC90 for the paste formulation was 6.66%, while the LC90 for the liquid formulation was 12.90%. Both the liquid and paste formulations had similar effects on mortality and viability. Based on the LC90 and LT90, the paste formulation was more efficient and faster in killing S. frugiperda than the liquid formulation. The results of this study provide recommendations that B. thuringiensis as a bioinsecticide is better formulated in a paste than in a liquid form.

Abstract

Dragonflies are one of the insects that have an important role in maintaining the balance of the food chain and the sustainability of the ecosystem. Dragonflies can be used as a natural indicator of the quality of an ecosystem, changes in an environmental ecosystem and to assess the level of environmental damage. Dragonflies can also be used as an indicator of air cleanliness. The aim of this research is to inventory the diversity of dragonfly species (Odonata) in the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens, observe the influence of the environment on the behavior of dragonflies (Odonata), and identify the types of dragonflies in the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens. The inventory method for dragonfly species is carried out using the shipping method which includes direct capture, collection, identification of dragonflies, and data analysis, as well as direct observation. 11 species of dragonflies were found which are members of 6 families, namely Libellulidae, Gomphidae Platynemididae, Chlorocyphidae, Coenagrionidae, Euphaeidae. Diversity of dragonfly types found in 6 locations in the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens area. The results say that the types of dragonflies are not different, showing a close relationship with the ability to adapt to environmental changes. Dragonflies in the Purwodadi Botanical Gardens are included in medium diversity because they are in the range 1H'3 with a value of 1.8. while the Dragonfly Type evenness index shows a value of 0.7, which means high evenness. The results of calculating the distribution of dragonflies show that the overall distribution of dragonflies is regular, except for Euphaea variegata which has a clustered distribution. This research proves that dragonflies have an important role in life, their biological function is as a predator of small insects and as a bioindicator of the quality of an environment.

Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the primary food commodities with a strategic role in improving Indonesia's economy. Additionally, maize contributes to food diversification and security. One of the main threats to maize production is pest attacks, including Stenocranus pacificus and Peregrinus maidis. This study aims to identify S. pacificus (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) found on maize crops in three sub-districts of Lamongan Regency, East Java, using both morphological and molecular approaches. Morphological identification revealed that the planthopper found is S. pacificus, characterized by an orange abdomen in male imagos and a white abdomen in female imagos. Molecular testing through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I deoxyribonucleic acid (mtCOI DNA) showed that the S. pacificus from Lamongan is 99.53% similar to S. pacificus WRJJ_UNILA and WRJB_UNILA. These findings are expected to support more accurate, rapid, and effective pest control strategies.

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda, commonly known as the fall armyworm, is a pest that attacks maize plants in Indonesia. Light is one of the crucial factors in the development of S. frugiperda. This study aims to observe and analyze the effects of different light exposure (photoperiod) on the duration of larval instars, pupal stage, and imago, as well as the body length and weight of S. frugiperda. The expected benefit of this research is to provide insights into how light influences the developmental stages of S. frugiperda under laboratory conditions. The test insects, S. frugiperda, were obtained from Agricultural Standardization Testing Center - Sweetener and Fiber Crops (BSIP-TAS) and were reared from the first instar larval stage, with a total of 56 individuals fed with young maize cobs. S. frugiperda undergoes complete metamorphosis, passing through egg, larval, pupal, and imago stages. The treatment with no light and 24 hours of darkness (0L:24D) resulted in the shortest duration for the larval, pupal, and imago stages, averaging 27.42 days, compared to other treatments. On the other hand, the 24L:0D treatment significantly affected body length and weight, showing distinct differences from other treatments (L: light; D: dark). The effect of light, using 238.89 lux illumination, was found to influence the development of S. frugiperda at each developmental stage.
