Abstract

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is one of the important plantation commodities in Indonesia. However, one of the factors that can affect productivity is weeds because weeds compete with cocoa in getting water, sunlight, nutrients, air, and space to grow. One of the largest cocoa plantation areas in East Java is the Banyuwangi district. Information about the types of cocoa weeds in Banyuwangi is unknown even though weeds in one area are different from another. Weed can reduce the production of cocoa. So, This study is important for determining appropriate control methods. This study aimed to determine the type, diversity, and abundance of weeds. The research method used in this study was a survey with a square-plot size. All weed samples were identified. The results showed that there were twelve types of broadleaf weeds, three types of grass weeds, one type of sedge, and one type of fern. The highest importance value index (IVI) was found in Ottochloa nodosa at 40.91%. The diversity of weeds was in a medium category. Weed diversity in cocoa plantations in Banyuwangi was different from other areas in Indonesia. The results of this research contribute to providing information on the diversity of weeds that can be used in determining weed control strategies in cocoa plantations.

Abstract

Meloidogyne spp. is a root-knot nematode that can cause damage to plants up to 68%. The common control is the use of pesticides, but in the long term, it can damage the soil, so it is necessary to use biological agents that can control Meloidogyne spp. without causing environmental damage. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of endophytic bacteria to control root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne spp.. The method used in this study was the exploration of endophytic bacteria from the Wonorejo mangrove ecotourism area, Surabaya using purposive sampling method. The five best endophytic bacteria were tested further with antagonistic tests. This test was carried out in vitro using 3 concentrations, namely 106, 108, and 1010 CFU/ml with 3 repetitions. The obtained results were tested using probit analysis to obtain the LC50 values. It was found that LC50 values for the most effective concentration to kill 50% of the Meloidogyne sp population is 109 and 1010 CFU/ml. It was also revealed that the isolate that is most capable of controlling Meloidogyne spp. nematodes is isolate A43. Keywords: Antagonist test, Endhopic bacteria, LC50, Mangrove, Meloidogyne spp.

Cow dung produces an average of 12% of body weight so cow dung can be a serious problem if unutilized, such as an environmental pollutant. Biotechnology is needed to process cow dung waste into fertilizer, i. e. bioactivators as the additional bio materials that can speed up the fermentation process and increase the nutrient content of the fertilizer produced. However, farmers do not yet know how to apply bioactivators in fertilizer processing. This community service aims to increase the knowledge and skills of farmers in processing cow dung waste into fertilizer using bioactivators. Implementation of this community service includes discussions, workshops, and mentoring. The results of this service show an increase in farmers' knowledge about how to make and the criteria for good fertilizer made from cow dung waste by 59.6%. In addition, farmers' skills in making fertilizer using bioactivators increased from unskilled to slightly skilled and skilled reaching 73.3%. Evaluation of this mentoring activity generally received a good response from farmers. Based on the results of this program, it is recommended that there be a need to renovate communal pens with a more appropriate design, and more complete facilities and infrastructure are needed for processing livestock waste for commercial purposes. Keywords: BUMDes; cattle; cow dung; local microbe; organic fertilizer.

Abstract

Aphis craccivora is one of the important pests on yard long bean. It causes direct damage and also has an indirect effect as insect vector of the Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). The research was done to test the effectiveness of chitosan in suppressing aphid population growth, feeding preference and its ability in transmiting BCMV. Chitosan with concentration ranging of 0.1–1.0% were applied on leaves using spraying method at 1 day before BCMV transmission. BCMV was transmitted by using 3 individuals of viruliferous aphids on each plant. Results show that chitosan treatments on leaves or plants significantly suppressed the population and feeding preferences of A. craccivora. Further, treated plants showed lower disease incidence, severity and BCMV titre significantly compared with untreated control plants. The positive effects of chitosan in suppressing population growth as feeding preferences and BCMV transmission might be due to the anti-feedant effect of chitosan on A. craccivora. Based on the result, chitosan at concentration 0.9% is the most effective concentration in suppressing BCMV and its vector A. craccivora.

Abstract

Corn is an important food commodity that susceptible to pest attacks such as armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). This invasive pest attacks the growing points of corn plants and causes decreased productivity. Supporting biological research on this pest, the development of artificial feed is crucial considering the limited natural feed. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of artificial diet formulations on the preferences of S. frugiperda larvae. Three formulations with different compositions are studied in this research. Instar 3 larvae were subjected to a preference test to determine the rapid response of the larvae and the weight of the feed consumed (daily consumption). The preference test was carried out in duration 1, 2, 4, 6, and 24 hours. The results showed that Formula 3, which uses natural ingredients such as baby corn and corn sprouts, has the highest initial attractiveness (30% in 1 hour). The physical and chemical characteristics of artificial diet affect the preferences of larvae with formula 3 being the most effective for rapid response, and formulas 1 and 2 being more stable for continuous use. The highest daily consumption of larvae was in formula 3 (0.066 ± 0.027 grams). However, it was not significantly different from formula 1 (0.058 ± 0.029 grams). The use of artificial feeds in the laboratory rearing of S. frugiperda offers a viable alternative to natural feeds, with Formula 3 showing a high initial preference, Formula 1 remaining attractive over time, and Formula 2 showing lower consumption, likely due to its efficient nutritional composition, as evidenced by feeding activity through visible bite marks and feed perforations.
