Abstract

This article aims to explain the symbolic meaning in the process of making the traditional sandeq boat of the Mandar people. The data collection process was carried out from April to June 2017. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 6 purposively selected expert informants, as well as direct observation in the field. The results of this study indicate that the ritual that accompanies the making of the traditional sandeq boat is seen in three main stages, namely: at the beginning of boat building, in the process of making boats, and launching boats into the sea. The meaning contained in the implementation of the ritual is the hope that it will always be given safety in using the boat. In addition, the ritual also intends to ask for abundant sustenance from the process of going to sea later. The religious value of the Mandar people is clearly seen from every stage of the ritual carried out, using mantras and prayers as verbal messages adopted from the Quran and with Islamic nuances. In addition, nonverbal messages in the ritual of making sandeq boats are centered on the use of ussul or the knowledge system of the local community which is carried out with actions or symbolic objects to show their hopes or desires.

Abstract

Celebes TV, one of the local television stations in Makassar, features news as its main program, Celebes Petang. News value is a consideration for journalists to cover what the informant has witnessed and been concerned about because the news becomes more interesting to watch. This research aimed to identify the process of the TV news production of Celebes Petang and all the people involved in the production program and to find out the understanding of Celebes TV journalists on the general criteria for reporting newsworthy events. This qualitative approach collected the data by observation, interviews, and documentation. The production process starts when the news manager, producer, and reportage in chief observe the broadcasting materials or theme from any courtesy. During the meeting, the reporter and the staff are assigned by the director of reportage to cover the news. After that, the reporter writes the script based on the news. This script is used as the material in the dubbing process. The next stage is editing the news items and dubbing. The producer will correct the result of the editing process. The approved result was printed into the data form and sent to the server to be aired live to the viewers by a crew of the master control room.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of civil-military relations in the post New Order era as depicted in the film Autobiography. Furthermore, the researcher examines the impact of New Order cultural legacies evident in the film. Autobiography is the first political thriller film after the Reformasi era to reflect the enduring hegemonic influence of military power in contemporary socio-political life. The researcher employs a qualitative-descriptive approach and John Fiske's codes of television concept. The study reveals that the film represents the impact of military dominance across three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. At the reality level, military attributes and the behavior of the character Purna affirm his position as a dominant authority. At the representation level, cinematic techniques such as lighting and dialogue create a tense atmosphere that reflects the military's psychological control over civilians. Finally, at the ideology level, the film's narrative exposes power imbalances and the authoritarian legacies of the past, which continue to influence Indonesia's social and political structures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the literature on social media use in political campaigns using a bibliometric analysis approach, which enables the identification of trends, patterns, and collaboration networks in related research. Using data from 166 publications indexed in Scopus, this study analyzes the development of research on social media and politics. The bibliometric analysis method employed in this research includes data collection through the Scopus database with specific filters, data cleaning using the Open Refine application, and visualization of the research network using VOSviewer. The analysis results show that the research trends significantly increase, focusing mainly on social media, political communication, and elections. Countries such as Spain and Germany dominate publications on these topics. Furthermore, leading institutions such as Eötvös Loránd University and LMU Munich are essential in developing knowledge in this field. The research concludes that while social media opens great opportunities for political participation, these platforms also bring serious challenges, especially regarding disinformation and polarization. It also recommends the need for a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of social media in political campaigns, as well as the importance of international collaboration and more inclusive research on gender issues and digital algorithms.

Abstract

This study analyzes the politicization of social assistance in the film Dirty Vote using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. The concept of signifier and signified is used to identify and interpret the visual and verbal signs presented in the film. The results of the analysis show that elements such as party symbols, dominant colors, budget graphs, and narrative scenes illustrate the close relationship between the distribution of social assistance and certain political agendas. Signifiers such as the overlay text "politicization of social assistance" and images of officials in the campaign reflect a systematic pattern that utilizes social assistance for electoral interests. The resulting signifiers reveal criticism of the abuse of power, the inequality of aid distribution, and its impact on public trust in the government. By understanding the sign system used, this study highlights the importance of public awareness of the issue of the politicization of social assistance in the context of democracy seen from the perspective of communication semiotics studies
