Abstract

This study aims to find out the English students’ difficulties in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension and the factors of the difficulties. The sample of this study was the English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who have taken the TOEFL test from August to December 2020. They were given 63 questions to explore their difficulties. Descriptive quantitative research is used in this study. The result showed that the English department students were disagree that they face difficulty in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension. However, they agreed that lack of vocabulary, lack of concentration, length and speed of listening and physical condition were the factors that encountered during the process of answering TOEFL test. By guessing the answer and using clues were the strategies they used to overcome the difficulties in answering TOEFL test of listening comprehension.

Abstract

AbstrakPengajaran membaca di sekolah menengah atas memiliki beberapa permasalahan. Diantara masalah tersebut ialah strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar belum menunjang tujuan pembelajaran secara utuh. Hal ini berdampak padapemahaman siswa terhadap isi bacaan yang masihjauh dari apa yang diharapkan oleh guru. Untuk pemecahan masalah tersebut dibutuhkan strategi yang tepat dan yang dapat membantu serta mempermudah siswa dalam membaca serta memahami sebuah teks bahasa inggris. StrategiIn My Head dianggap cocok untuk diaplikasikan pada pengajaran membaca karena strategiini dapat membantu siswa dalam menyusun ide – ide yang mereka tangkap dari isi bacaan, yang mana ide-ide tersebut nantinya akan dituangkan siswa ke dalam sebuah handout secara individual. Setelah itu guru akan menanyakan pemahaman masing-masing siswa dan pada akhirnya guru akan merangkum pemahaman siswa secara umum mengenai keseluruhan isi teks sehingga terciptalah sebuah pemahaman yang sempurna.Kata Kunci: In My Head strategy, handout, pengajaran membaca.

Abstract

Storybook is a book used for students to improve reading comprehension through pictures and color. The purpose of this research is to find out whether a storybook effective or not on students' reading comprehension. This research also aims to know students' opinions on storybooks for reading comprehension. This research was pre-experimental to evaluate the influence of a variable on one group by pre-test and post-test design. The population and sample of this research were 23 students on first-grade students of SMPN 2 Padang Panjang. This research used two instruments; reading comprehension test and student's opinion on storybooks for the reading comprehension questionnaire. The result shows that a storybook is effective on students’ reading comprehension.  The mean score on the pre-test was 48.22 and the mean score on the post-test was 83.66. The significant value of this research is 0.00. The Sig. (2-tailed) determines there is a significant difference from pre-test to post-test. Supported by students’ opinion on storybooks for reading comprehension questionnaire interpreted as strongly agree with the mean score total is 3.24. The mean score between 3,20 up to 4,00 indicated that a storybook is very good for reading comprehension. The totals mean score was 3.37 that can be interpreted as very good.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Perangkat lunak komputer merupakan salah satu pilihan yang dapat digunakan dalam membuat suatu media pengajaran. Guru dapat menuangkan dan mengaplikasikan ide-ide baru dalam membuat media yang akan meningkatkan motivasi dan ketertarikan siswa dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam berbicara. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru dalam pembuatan media dengan menggunakan “Microsoft PowerPoint” sebagai media pembelajaran, yang berguna untuk melatih siswa secara audio dan visual. Microsoft PowerPoint adalah sebuah perangkat lunak berbasis Windows, yang merupakan sebuah perangkat lunak yang bisa digunakan untuk menciptakan media yang menarik berbentuk multimedia, dan dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara. Dengan menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint, guru dapat membentuk media yang terdiri dari slide gambar, video, atau bahkan audio menjadi sebuah media yang sangat menarik, yang dapat mendukung pengajaran berbicara. Dalam makalah ini, terdapat proses dan contoh dari pembuatan media pembelajaran menggunakan Microsoft PowerPoint yang dapat diaplikasikan dalam pengajaran berbicara bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan cara penggunaan sebuah teknik pengajaran kolaboratif yang bernama think pair square untuk memudahkan siswa sekolah menengah atas menulis discussion text. Dengan teknik ini siswa pertama diminta untuk mencari argumen sendiri kemudian mendiskusikannya dengan teman yang menjadi pasangannya dan diteruskan dengan diskusi dengan kelompok yang terdiri dari empat orang. Dengan diskusi ini diharapkan kesulitan siswa dalam mengumpulkan argumen-argumen yang mendukung dan menentang topik yang akan ditulis dapat teratasi karena siswa dapat saling melengkapi argumen satu sama lain. Abstract

Lesson study is an alternative program for teacher to see the social interaction of students’ learning process and to stimulus and development learning practices. This research is focused on issues of using Lesson Study at English department in Universitas Negeri Padang. This research population took in the class at English Department Universitas Negeri Padang. This study also sees the lecturer experience about the issue in using Lesson Study the beneficial and difficulties based on the lecturer perspective. This research is conducted by using descriptive research design.  The source of the research were lecturers of English Department Universitas Negeri Padang who have been using Lesson Study in the class. The study shows some issues for lecturers such as time constraints, less understanding of Lesson Study context, campus policy change, and build lecturer’s skills professionally.

Abstract

Dalam proses belajar mengajar banyak cara pengajaran yang dapat digunakan untuk membantu siswa memahami pelajaran dan memudahkan proses belajar mengajar. Dalam proses belajar mengajar banyak siswa yang kesulitan dalam memahami teks dalam suatu bacaan, khususnya descriptive text. Untuk itu penulis memperkenalkan sebuah strategi dalam mengerjakan reading yaitu dengan menggunakan “THIEVES” strategi (Title, Headings, Introduction, Every first sentence, Visual, End of the text, and Summary). Title/judul, Headings/bagian atas atau kepala text, introduction/ pengenalan atau pengantar text, Every first sentence/ kalimat pertama dalam text, visual/ media sebagai alat peraga, end of text/ akhir dari text, summary/ kesimpulan dari text. Dalam strategi ini siswa akan lebih lebih mudah menemukan informasi dari teks. Dalam strategi ini siswa diberikan kesempatan untuk menemukan informasi sebelum mereka membaca sehingga mereka lebih aktif dan termotivasi dalam pembalajaran bahasa inggris khusunya dalam reading. Penulis juga berharap strategi ini dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi guru dalam mengajarkan reading dan bisa meningkatkan minat siswa dalam membaca.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this research was to describe the use of passive voice in analytical exposition text. This research was descriptive research and the subjects of this research were students of SMAN 1 Nan Sabaris grade XI Natural Science class. The data were 133 pieces of students writing gathered from a test. The result of this research showed some points. First, the ratio between passive sentences to active sentences in analytical exposition text written by senior high school students was about 1:4. Second, the ratio between incorrect passive sentences to correct passive sentences was about 5:9. Finally, the analysis of taxonomy of incorrect passive sentences showed that 36.25% were error in using past participle form of verb, 28.75% were error in using auxiliary be, and 21.25% were error because the sentences were formed in passive construction, however the sentences should be remain in active form. So, it can be concluded that the analytical exposition text written by senior high school students was not good because the good analytical exposition text should have more passive sentences in correct construction.Kata kunci : Passive Voice, Analytical Exposition Text, Passive Sentence, Active Sentence

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa ringkas, terpercaya, jelas, dan benar karya tulis mahasiswa. Sampel adalah mahasiswa tahun ketiga di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang. Data berasal dari tes tertulis. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, 66% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan sedang, 32% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan Buruk, dan 2% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan Sangat Buruk.  Keringkasan tulisan siswa dikategorikan sedang, dan buruk untuk kredibilitas, kejelasan, dan kebenaran. Abstract

The purposes of this study were to (1) describe the ability of the third year students at English Department in arranging words intonoun phrase with pre-modifiers, (2) know what the causes of the deviations in arranging noun phrase. The data of this study were gathered by using grammar test which had 40 group of words which were arranged into noun phrase. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the ability of the students was poor. The average of the score was 46.12 from 29 students as the sample. Meanwhile, the data which were taken from interview showed that the deviations happened because they did not know the order of the modifiers in the noun phrase.
