Abstract

Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel (Hemiptera; Aphididae) is the main vector of banana bunchy top disease caused by Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV). The disease is an important and most damaging disease to the crop because infected bananas fail to produce fruits. As the vector of BBTV, P. nigronervosa is able to lives not only on banana plants but also on others plants, especially those belong to Family Zingiberaceae. The objective of this research was to reveal the biology of P. nigronervosa on banana and other plant species belong to Family Zingiberaceae commonly found around banana cultivation areas. The research was conducted in the Laboratory of Entomology, Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University from June to December 2021. The research was an experimental research arranged in a Completely Randomized Design using plant species as treatment and was replicated 10 times of replications. Young suckers of banana and zingiberaceous plants were used to rear the banana aphid where all biological aspects of the aphid were observed. P. nigronervosa and the young suckers were placed in a transparent pot covered with transparent plastic with a window made from cheese cloth to facilitate air movement. Room temperature was set to approximately 25oC since the aphid grow and reproduce well under such temperature. The results showed that P. nigronervosa are able to live and reproduce not only on banana but also on seven species of Zingiberaceous plants with little variation of some morphological and biological parameters. The significant different was found between biological characteristics of the aphid lived on torch ginger and cardamom which had longer life cycle but smaller fecundity compared to other experimental hosts used in the research.

Abstract

Reducing crop cultivation is providing ecological biota for plants through Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Farmers' problems regarding pests and diseases in Banyuasin and OKU Timur, especially for food crops and horticulture farmers. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the compliance of food crops and horticulture farmers in implementing safe and environmentally friendly IPM. Study on various fields of food and horticulture farmers in Banyuasin and Ogan Komering Ulu. The research method used is purposive sampling. Observation of Plant Pests and Diseases was completed directly in the field. Then determine the disease score in each sample plant. The parameters observed in this study are the behavior of farmers towards the decision-making process of using pesticides. Pest and disease intensity, and disease attack percentage were analyzed descriptively in the form of tables and graphs, as well as correlation analysis. The highest value of diversity of pests and diseases of food and horticultural crops based on the entire area of the observed land was found in a land area of 0.25 ha, which is the area that is often found in land for crop cultivation. The average age percentage of farmers in Banyuasin and OKU East is 40 to 50 years old. The average education of farmers in Banyuasin and OKU Timur is 24 farmers. The percentage and intensity of both horticultural and food crops in Banyuasin are good because only a few farmers get a score of 2 or 1. Cultivation techniques are land preparation, land sanitation, selection of resistant varieties, spacing, irrigation, crop rotation, intercropping, mulching, natural enemies of insects, and weeding.

Abstract

Banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is widely known as the main vector of Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV). It had been reported that banana aphid could live on alternative hosts belong to Family Araceae, and become important issue since Araceous plants are commonly found surrounding banana cultivations. Research had been conducted to study the morphometrics and biological characteristics of banana aphids living on various species of Araceous plants. The results showed that Araceous plant species could influence the morphometric and biological characteristic of banana aphids, indicated by the significant difference in some biological characteristics such as life cycle, life span, reproductive period, and fecundity. The average life span of banana aphids living on Araceous plants ranged from 22.80 to 47.90 days, it was shorter than the one that of lived on a banana plants. P. nigronervosa was able to develop a bigger colony when the aphid lived on Araceous plants, especially when they were transferred to Bogor taro where their fecundity reached 63 nymphs per female. Araceous plants also affected the morphometric of P. nigronervosa indicated by smaller size of the aphids, compared to those living on banana plant. The ability of banana aphid to live and reproduce in various Araceous plants would be beneficial to the development of control strategies of BBTV.

Abstract

Chili is one of the important commodities in Indonesia. Chili cultivation faces many obstacles, leading to a decrease in production, such as virus infections. Yellow leaf curl and curly top viruses are groups of viruses that are often found in chili fields. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of intercropping (basil-chili) in suppressing viral diseases, especially yellow leaf curl and curly top viruses. A Randomized block design was used for this research, including intercropping and monoculture. The parameters observed in this study included disease incidence and intensity, the number and weight of chilies. Symptoms of virus infection include leaf curl, yellowing, and stunting. The disease has been reported to be transmitted by insect vectors, such as Aphis gossypii and Bemisia tabaci. The results showed that the incidence and intensity of yellow leaf curl and curly top virus diseases in chili pepper and basil plants were not significantly different in each treatment. The number of healthy chilies and their weight were also not significantly different. Damaged chilies are fruits that have been attacked by fruit flies. Basil intercropped with chilies attracts fruit flies, which affects the quantity and weight of the harvested chilies. The population of B. tabaci was significantly different in each treatment, while A. gossypii did not show significant differences among the treatments. Intercropping basil and chili increased the population of A. gossypii, while the population of B. tabaci decreased in this treatment. These two insect pests are vectors for yellow leaf curl and curly top viruses.

(Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-10 Tahun 2022, Palembang  27 Oktober 2022. pp. 1011-1022.  Palembang: Penerbit dan Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).The luffa plant/oyong is a fruit vegetable that is widely consumed by Indonesians in the form of fresh fruit The nutritional value of luffa is quite good because this fruit vegetable is a source of vitamins and minerals. Oyong plant is a climbing plant/vine. Oyong plants need a dry climate, with sufficient water availability throughout the season. Agricultural cultivation systems are never free from pests or diseases. In the field of farmers, there is not much knowledge about plant diseases or the causes of the disease itself. For this reason, this research practice aims to determine the effect of intercropping on disease attacks on Oyong (Luffa acutangula) plants. Field practice has been carried out in Kuripan Village, Empat Petulai Dangku District, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province from May to June 2022. The observation method used in this field practice is the direct observation method in the field which is carried out by determining the land, the land being taken has different cropping patterns. Then determine the plants to be sampled using the diagonal method. The data collected were primary data in the form of direct observation of symptoms in the field and secondary data obtained from farmer interviews. From the observation, there were 2 types of diseases, namely brown spots and virus mosaic.
