Abstract

This study deals with Illocutionary Act of Hazel Grace as the main character inThe Fault in Our Stars movie. The objectives of the study was discovered thetypes of Illocutionary Act which were used by Hazel Grace as the main characterand described in what contexts that she used in The Fault in Our Stars movie. Thesubject of this study was The Fault in Our Stars movie and each spoken words orthe conversation by Hazel Grace that were written in The Fault in Our Starsmovie script became the source of the data. The data were collected by browsingand downloading from internet. This study was conducted by using qualitativedescriptive design. The result of analyzing types and the contexts of IllocutionaryAct were used by Hazel Grace as main character such as representatives with34.6% (236 utterances), directives with 24.3% (166 utterances), expressives with22.2% (152 utterances), declaratives with 15.5% (106 utterances) andcommissives with 3.4% (23 utterances) and made representative became the mostdominant type. And representative context was the dominant context because TheFault in Our Stars movie used first person, main character’s point of view fromperspective of the main character that Hazel Grace used like informing,describing, sharing, believing, stating a fact, assuming, predicting and alsocomplaining which make her like a narrator in that movie because she informs,describes, shares about her diseases, her interests, her thought also about life oreverything, and what she believe by herself.

Abstract

This study deals with Conversational Moves in Ace Ventura Movie. The purpose of the study is to find out the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura movie 1st series, describing how the moves are played by the characters of Ace Ventura movie 1st series and to find out the reason why the Moves are played in the way it is. The data were analyzed based on the Structure of interaction theory by Martin (1992). The analysis showed the moves are played by the main character of Ace Ventura Movie are K1 (primary knower) 37,9 %, K2 (secondary knower) 21,07 %, K1f (primary knower follow-up) 4,64 %, K2f (secondary knower follow-up)13,6 %, A1 (primary actor) 3.2 %, A2 (secondary actor) 7,14 %, A1f (primary actor follow-up) 0,35 %, A2f (secondary actor follow-up), Da1 (delay primary actor) 0,35 %, Bch (backchannel) 0,35 %, Cl (clarification) 0,35 %, Cf (confirmation) 3,2 %, Rcf (response to confirmation) 4,64 % and Ch (challenging) 0,71 %. The moves that are played by the characters is dynamic because the speakers on that dialogue staged clarification, confirmation, back-channel and challenging move on the dialogue.Keywords: ConversationalMoves, Dynamics of Exchange.

Abstract

This study dealt with lexical cohesive devices in News Story Text of Daily Analisa. It employed descriptive qualitative research method. The news story textsis analyzed using cohesive devices theory by Michael Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan. This study was aimed to analyze: (1) The kinds of Lexical Cohesive Devices which are used in News story texts of the Daily Analisa (2) How Lexical Cohesive devices used in News story text of The Daily Analisa. The result shows that not all lexical cohesive devices types are used in news story text. The findings are only has three types of the cohesive devices in the text. Based on the analysis, the lexical cohesive devices ties in the text construct the unity as well as the context in the text. in the other words, the lexical cohesive devices makes the text function in which it is embedded. Abstract

The study was conducted to establish listening media for Grade VII of Junior High School Students. Research and Development (R&D) was conducted in the study. Listening media was designed through six stages namely. (1) Gathering information and data; (2) analyzing data; (3) designing materials; (4) validating by experts; (5) revising; and (6) final product. The data were collected by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to one class of grade VII consisting of 30 students to get the students’ needs in improving listening skill. The interview and questionnaire results showed that the students needed English Listening Media which could motivate and encourage the students to speak actively in English since both listening and speaking are integrated each other. The authority had assessed the media produced. The outcome of the research was an E-learning media named Moodle Cloud. The rate of assessment of the product was 93.55%. Therefore all the features were categorized as a relevant and effective media in improving students’ listening skill.

Abstract

The increasing usage of creative writing strategy in a poetry writing classroom can nevertheless answer the question which has been empirically explored throughout the decade; Can second language learner write a poem in their non-native tongue? This study aimed to answer whether the creative writing strategy can facilitate novice writers who are the third year of English Department undergraduate students to be able to write an English poem. The strategies cover written prompts dealing with their personal experience and memory. After conducting two series of creative writing workshop, the result conveys that second language novice writers demonstrate the ability to communicate their personal experience dealing with their significant others. Repetition of words and grammatical error exist, yet most writers can produce longer poems with complexities. Also by providing the novice writers with written prompts, students find themselves more enthusiastic and eager to write.

Abstract

This study is a Research and Development (R & D) focused on a set of task-based supplementary English reading materials of descriptive texts. The aims of this study is To develop task-based supplementary English reading materials focusing on descriptive texts for Seventh Grade Junior High School Students. The subjects were Grade Seven students of SMP Al-Washliyah 8 Medan Class VII-6. This research used quantitave research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected by following the research stages were conducting needs analysis, writing a course grid, designing the first draft, getting expert judgment, and revision. This research was conducted by following Masuhara (in Tomlinson, 1998) research design with several modifications. The result of this research showed that the supplementary reading materials that students need were materials which related to their real life and contain the structure and function of the texts, vocabulary and grammar lesson and interesting reading activities which allow them to interact with the teacher and other students. The product of this study was a set of task-based supplementary English reading materials focusing on descriptive texts for Grade VII students of Junior High School entitled “Reading Practice‟. It consisted of three units. Each unit of the developed materials consisted of 20-25 reading activities. Based on the data from the expert judgement, the mean value of all aspects of the three developed units fell into the range of 3.25 ≤ x ≤ 4. It means that the developed materials were categorized as “Very Good”. Thus, it can be concluded that the task-based supplementary English reading materials have been appropriate for Grade VII students of Junior High School.Keywords: English Reading Materials, Masuhara research design, Teaching Reading

Abstract

The aims of this research were: (1) to find out the suitable the reading materials for grade eight students of SMP N 1 Kotapinang, (2) to find out how to design English reading materials based on problem based learning which is suitable to the needs of students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was class X students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After , anlyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing the questionnaire to 38 students to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needs English reading materials which cointain English relating to their daily life environment. Thus, developing English reading mateials were descriptive text. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 5,17 from English Lecturer and 4,68 from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for Grade X Students of SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This research developed Problem Based Learning materials. It covers reading skill and consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement tasks. The input was in the form of written texts, vocabulary list and grammar explanation. The students were encouraged to do discussion and involve in active investigation to solve and do tasks. Most of the tasks are done in a small group discussion and in pairs. Based on the results of materials evaluation, the content, language, presentation and graphic of the developed materials are considered appropriate. Keywords : Research and Development (R & D, Problem Based Learning ,Descriptive Text

Abstract

The study outlines hate speech on “Live: Trumps reacts to US election result” video in the Independent Youtube Channel. This study aimed to determine types and intentions of hate speech used in the Youtube comment. This study used descriptive qualitative and the research data were analyzed using Mondal (2017) theory to describe type of hate speech found on the comment section while Kreidler (2002) theory were used to showed the intentions of the data. By identifying the comments which are classified contain hate speech, using Mondal (2017) and Kreidler (2002) theory, this study showed that were four out of ten types of hate speech found, namely other, behavior, physical, and sexual orientation. While the highest intentions of the data occurred on mocking and the rests are accusing, insulting, insinuating, and blaming someone.REACTS TO US ELECTION RESULT” VIDEO IN THE INDEPENDENT YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Abstract

This study deals with Language Formality used on TV program 'Satu Indonesia Net TV'. The objectives of this study were to find out the level of the language and describe the language formality in  TV  program. This  research  was  conducted  by  using descriptive qualitative Method. The data were the dialogues in program 'Satu Indonesia' special  episode  August  12th   2016 and  17th   December  2016  which  was  taken  from YouTube. The findings indicated that there were four level of formalities found on Program Satu Indonesia. There were 4,87% Frozen,31% Formal, Consultative 21,95 and 18,85% Casual. The most dominant level that is used by the figures in this program was Formal Level. It explained that, the figures from political scale used the language differently based on the context and the situation that is held in a conversation.
