Efforts to control blood pressure pharmacologically by using anti-hypertensive drugs in the long term can have a negative impact on health in general, especially without strict supervision and control from medical personnel. Efforts to treat hypertension safely and easily by the community can be carried out through efforts to implement complementary therapies outside of pharmacotherapy treatment which have been proven and are easy for the community to carry out independently using acupressure techniques. The aim of empowering the elderly focused on promotive, preventive, and curative efforts in handling hypertension problems in the community to increase knowledge, awareness, and ability to treat hypertension based on non-pharmacological curative efforts by implementing complementary and alternative therapies independently. The method used in community service activities was carried out through stages of activities: 1. Analyzing partner needs. 2. Empowerment activities by providing education and training to PKM partners regarding complementary therapy for hypertension using acupressure techniques. 3. Building an atmosphere by developing innovative activities for the continuity of activities by creating an atmosphere of activities that is safe, comfortable, enjoyable as well as efficient, and effective. There were 25 participants who took part in the activity. The results of the activity were increased in participants' knowledge and skills in treating hypertension in the community. The conclusion was that there was an increase in knowledge and skills among people with hypertension and their families in understanding hypertension and how to treat it with complementary therapy in the form of acupressure. Keywords: Enpowerment, Elderly, Hypertension, Complementary, Acupressure

Abstract

Hypertension in the elderly is one of the global health challenges with a high prevalence. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of isometric handgrip exercise and walking exercise in reducing blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. The research method used a quasi-experimental design with three intervention groups: (1) isometric handgrip exercise, (2) walking exercise, and (3) a combination of both. A total of 36 elderly were randomly selected and equally divided into the three groups. The intervention was conducted for eight weeks with analysis using Shapiro Wilk test, One Way Anova and Wilcoxon Test The results showed that the isometric handgrip and combination exercise groups had a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p<0.05). Meanwhile, walking exercise also had a positive effect, although not significant in all weeks of evaluation. The combination of both interventions showed the most optimal results, especially at weeks 5 and 8. This study concludes that isometric handgrip exercise and its combination with walking exercise are effective for lowering blood pressure in elderly with hypertension. It is recommended that this intervention be applied as a non-pharmacological therapy in elderly health services, with assistance by health workers to improve compliance and effectiveness of the program.
