Abstract

Information about fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae) diversity in Lombok island is still lacking. This study was aimed to determine the diversity and species composition of the Dacinae fruit flies as well as developed the identification key of fruit flies in Lombok island. The research was conducted in 6 locations i.e., Nature Park (NP) of Kerandangan, NP of Suranadi, Lemor forest, Gangga garden, Lingsar garden, dan Lemor garden, spread across the island of Lombok from March to June 2020. Each location consisted of 6 observation plots using the transect method as far as one kilometer with a distance between the plots of 200 m. Fruit flies were collected using a steiner type trap with different attractants i.e. namely methyl eugenol (ME) and cue lure (CL). Identification of fruit flies were carried out at the Plant Quarantine Laboratory, Balai Karantina Pertanian Kelas I Mataram. Overall 22 species from 210,267 individuals of fruit flies were collected with 4 dominance species were Bactrocera limbifera, B. caudata, B. carambolae, and B. dorsalis. The most abundant spesies was B. carambolae which comprises 47% of the total population. Based on 22 species that recorded in this research, the identification key of fruit flies in Lombok Island was constructed. A dichotomous key is provided that describes 2 genera, 4 subgenus, and 22 species of fruit flies. The identification key uses a morphological character matrix, by comparing several key morphological characters in determining species of fruit flies.

Abstract

Studies of the effects of landscape composition on pests and their natural enemies on agroforestry systems is still limited, whereas the system can maintain biodiversity. This research investigated the impact of agricultural landscape composition on shaping the interaction between pests and natural enemies in cacao agroforestry. The study was conducted in twelve cacao plantations spread across five districts in East Java, Indonesia. A sampling of insects was carried out by observing the intensity of pest attacks and the diversity and abundance of predators. The surrounding landscape of the cacao field was characterized by manually digitalizing the land use. The results found two main pests attacking all cacao plantations: cacao pod borer, Conophomorpha cramerella (CPB) with attack intensity 0.72-12.05%, and Helopeltis sp. with attack intensity 12.39-42.24%. Management of cacao plantations, such as intensification and canopy cover, significantly affected the attack intensity of CPB but not Helopeltis sp. Based on the generalized linear model, the landscape composition, especially the patch number of natural habitats, positively impacted CPB attack intensity and predator abundance. However, predator abundance harmed CPB attack intensity. In conclusion, the proportion of natural habitat in agricultural landscapes contributes to reducing the attack intensity of pests via maintaining natural enemy abundance.

Abstract

Habitat conditions around cocoa plantations which include canopy cover and lower vegetation (weeds) as well as the presence of mealybugs trophobiont (Planococcus sp.) can affect the diversity and abundance of ants. The objective of this research was to study the diversity and abundance of ants in cocoa plantations and to study the effect of habitat conditions and the presence of trophobiont (Planococcus sp.) on species richness and ant abundance. The research was carried out in 12 locations spread across five districts in East Java. Ant samples were collected by tuna bait and direct collection. The results obtained 5,475 individuals and 8 species of ants. The most dominant ants and found in all areas were Dolichoderus thoracicus (Smith) and Technomyrmex albipes (Smith). Based on the regression analysis, there is a relationship between canopy cover and vegetation diversity with ant species, but not with abundance, meanwhile the presence of trophobiont shows a positive correlation with ant abundance. The habitat conditions for cocoa cultivation and the presence of trophobiont affect the diversity and abundance of ants in cocoa plantations.

Abstract

In an effort to reduce the impact of synthetic nematicides, a new formula was developed using plant-based nematicides that are more environmentally friendly, one of the basic ingredients that can be used is turmeric. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of turmeric extract (Curcuma domestica) with various different solvents namely aquades, methanol, and n-hexane at concentration of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% respectively in inhibiting the activity of Meloidogyne spp. The experiment used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Each treatment was repeated 4 times with 4 controls so that there were 52 experimental units. The result of different research data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) which was then further tested with Honest Significant Difference (HSD) at the 5% level if real, and t-test for in vivo test. Based on the tested extract, it was found that turmeric extract with various solvent (aquades, methanol, and n-hexane) was effective in inhibiting the activity of Meloidogyne spp. nematodes outside the roots (hatching eggs and penetration), turmeric extract didn’t affect the activity of Meloidogyne spp. in the roots (development and reproduction), vegetable nematicides which the most active in suppressing the population and inhibiting the activity of nematodes was turmeric extract using methanol as a solvent at a concentration of 20%.

Abstract

Fruitflies, particularly Bactrocera carambolae and Bactrocera dorsalis, are significant pests that have the potential to diminish the quality and quantity of agricultural products. They may live in diverse habitats, particularly in agroecosystem habitats. Orchard habitats offer a source of food and development for fruit flies like B. carambolae and B. dorsalis not only in Java, notably Majalengka Regency, but also in Lombok Island and West Nusa Tenggara. Consequently, the purpose of there search is to observe (1) The population dynamic of B. carambolae and B. dorsalis in the orchard habitat. (2) Distribution of fruit flies B. carambolae and B. dorsalis trapping results in the orchard habitat. (3) Analyzing the factors affecting the presence of the fruit fly species B. carambolae and B. dorsalis in the orchard habitat. Fruitflies were sampled using the trap method between December 2021 and March 2022. In the orchard habitat on the mangosteen fruit commodity, the results indicated that B. carambolae and B. dorsalis had the largest population densities. Additionally, orchard locations on Lombok Island had the highest population density. Furthermore, fruitflies are more prevalent in perennial crops than in annual ones due to higher population density. Perennial crops are the ideal conditions for fruit fly development as compared to seasonal crops.

Abstract

Coffee, a globally important commodity, faces difficulties in Indonesia due to pests that reduce its quality and productivity. The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is particularly dangerous, causing hollowed-out coffee seeds and causing massive annual losses worldwide and in Indonesia. Factors such as climate, weather, and other environmental aspects play a pivotal role in influencing pest lifecycles, emphasizing the necessity of understanding the intricate relationship between pests and their environment for effective management. This research aims to contribute to minimizing coffee production losses and harvest failures resulting from H. hampei infestations. This study relies on secondary data from the BBPPTP in Surabaya and NASA. Using panel data regression analysis, the study discovers that coffee berry borer attacks in the Pasuruan District follow a seasonal pattern. Furthermore, with a forecasting accuracy of 15.94%, the model reveals that air humidity, temperature, and previous attacks are the dominant variables influencing current coffee berry borer attacks. The developed model provides a reliable tool for forecasting coffee berry borer attacks, with humidity and previous month's attacks emerging as the most influential factors, particularly in the Pasuruan District of East Java.
