Abstract

Project-based learning (PjBL) has been widely implemented in language learning. However, no research has been conducted on its use with linguistic landscape (LL) as a pedagogical tool in primary schools. This study was therefore conducted to look into the use of PjBL with LL for language practices and values in primary school. The purpose is to analyse the kinds of PjBL incorporating LL conducted, the teaching procedures implemented, the competencies and values promoted, and teachers’ opinions about its use for primary school. The study used a mixed-methods design that relied heavily on qualitative description and was supplemented with quantitative analysis. The study was conducted at a primary school, which was selected using the purposive sampling technique. Six teachers, six experts and students of grades 4, 5, and 6 teachers were involved. The amount of 520 LL was collected during the year 2022 using direct observation, questionnaire, interviews, and document study analysis. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show that PjBL of various kinds (PLS projects, legacy students’ projects, event-based and annual projects) has been incorporated into LL for language instruction. The teacher needs to prepare, introduce the concept of LL, allow students to observe and analyze the tasks, have discussions, design and creation, presentation and display, and reflection as the teaching procedure.  Multifaceted competence and values are promoted. The teachers and experts have positive opinions about it. The study implied that PjBL with LL is very beneficial for language practices and character values.

Abstract

The research dealt with speech function used by male and female teachers in classroom interaction. The aims of this study were: (1) to discover the types of speech function used by male and female teachers in classroom interaction (2) to describe how the speech functions are realized as the ways they are (3) to elaborate the reasons why the speech function are realized as the ways they are. This study used descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected by following instruments: observing, recording and interviewing. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) the types of speech function that have been found in the male and female teachers in the classroom are statement, question, offer, command, initiating minor, acknowledgement, contradiction, answer, compliance and responding minor. (2) For the realization of speech function by male male and female teachers, there are two ways that have been found in realization of mood structure of male and female teachers talk, namely, typical clause mood, and non typical clause mood. In typical clause mood, there are four ways that have been found, namely statement that realized in declarative mood, then, question that realized in interrogative mood, command that realized in imperative mood, after that minor initiating that realized in minor. Beside that, in non typical clause mood, it is found there are four ways in realization of mood by male and female teachers, namely statement that realized by tagged declarative, question that realized by declarative, offer that realized by declarative and command that realized by declarative.(3) For the reasons in realization of mood by male and female teachers, In this study, the researcher found that reasons in realization of speech function of male and female teachers during the learning process was affected by teachers™ belief related to the teacher™s knowledge about the mood which are typical mood (congruent) and non-typical mood (incongruent). In typical mood, male and female teachers believe by initiating statement, initiating question, and initiating command have particular reasons. In non-typical mood (incongruent), both of male and female teachers believe that the use of Indonesian language influences the realization of speech function in metaphorical remarkKeywords: Speech Functions, Gender and Classroom Interaction.

Abstract

In 2020-2024, the Ministry of Education and Culture launched one of the main objectives of developing a strategic plan, namely optimizing the quality of learning in innovative forms in order to realize student success in achieving maximum learning outcomes that include attitudes, knowledge and skills. Hodijah, S & et al (2022) argue regarding the development goals of the Ministry of Education and Culture that the expected innovative learning can be implemented from learning created in the form of collaborative and participatory classes. Furthermore, according to the 2022 edition of EF English First Proficiency, Indonesia is in 81st place out of 111 countries with a score of 469 which falls into the Low Proficiency category in every aspect of the English language, one of which is Translation. Based on these things, to overcome the low level of students' English proficiency, especially in terms of Translation and to answer the demands of the Ministry of Education and Culture for Higher Education in creating innovative classes . It is recommended for lecturers to use the Case Study learning model because it has been proven to be effective in improving translation skills in various previous studies. Based on these things, this research aims to developCase Study Learning to Improve Students' Translation Ability in the Translation in English Language Teaching (ELT) Course, Department of English Language and Literature, Medan State University The development of the Case Study Learning Model was carried out using the ADDIE Development model which consists of 5 stages, namely; (1) Needs analysis, (2) Design of the Case learning model 3) Development of the Case Study Learning Model in Translation in ELT Learning (4) Implementation, namely trial of the Case Study learning model in the Translation in ELT course (5) Evaluation of Case Study model-based learning . This research uses a qualitative and quantitative descriptive approach in analyzing data. Validity tests, Practicality Tests and Effectiveness Tests was carried out on the development product to ensure that the Case Study Learning Model developed valid, practical and effective in improving students' translation skills in the Translation in ELT course. The results of the research show that the model developed is valid, practical and effective.

Abstract

This study investigates the prevalence and nature of speaking anxiety among tenth-grade students at SMAN 15 Medan, with a particular focus on physical, mental, and emotional symptoms. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the research utilized observations and interviews to capture a comprehensive picture of the students' anxiety experiences. Analysis of the data revealed that physical symptoms were the most frequently reported, with a total of 83 instances documented. These included rapid heartbeat, difficulty speaking, trembling, and difficulty breathing, among others. Emotional symptoms were also prominent, with students frequently expressing feelings of nervousness, fear, and embarrassment. Mental symptoms, while less common, included issues such as memory lapses and cognitive disruptions. The findings indicate that speaking anxiety manifests predominantly through physical and emotional symptoms, with mental symptoms being less frequent but still impactful. Additionally, many students exhibited multiple types of symptoms simultaneously, underscoring the multifaceted nature of speaking anxiety. This research highlights the need for a holistic approach to addressing speaking anxiety, suggesting that future interventions should focus on reducing physical symptoms, enhancing emotional support, and improving cognitive strategies to help students manage their speaking anxiety effectively.
