Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in Single Variable Linear Equations and the Pythagorean Theorem based on Polya's problem-solving stages. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach involving 40 eighth-grade students VIII junior high school students through descriptive tests and interviews. The results of the analysis show that students' mathematical problem-solving abilities are in the moderate category for both subjects, with an average score of 74.85 for Single Variable Linear Equations and 74.67 for the Pythagorean Theorem. Students in the high category are able to go through all stages of problem solving systematically. Students in the moderate category were able to understand the problem and plan a solution strategy, but often made computational errors. Conversely, students in the low category had difficulty understanding information, constructing mathematical models, and implementing solution procedures. Overall, the results of this study confirm the need to strengthen problem-solving-based learning that emphasizes understanding concepts and solution strategies to optimally improve students' mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving abilities in trigonometry material remain a challenge for many students, partly because they lack self-directed learning skills to manage the learning process. This research aims to analyze the relationship between self-directed learning and students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in trigonometry material. The research approach is quantitative, using a correlational method. The research sample consists of 62 vocational high school students in Karawang Regency, selected through random sampling. The research instruments include a self-directed learning questionnaire and an essay test of problem-solving abilities. The questionnaire measures initiative, responsibility, self-regulation, and students' evaluative abilities in the learning process, while the problem-solving ability test assesses students' abilities to understand, plan, execute, and evaluate trigonometry problem solutions. Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson correlation test. The research results show a strong, significant positive relationship between self-directed learning and mathematical problem-solving abilities, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.679 and a significance value of < 0.001. These findings indicate that increased self-directed learning tends to be followed by greater ability to solve mathematical problems.

Abstract

This quantitative study aimed to examine the simultaneous and partial effects of self-efficacy and gender on mathematics learning outcomes related to circle equations among high school students. Employing a multiple regression design, the research involved 139 twelfth-grade students from SMA Negeri 7 Tambun Selatan, selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected through a self-efficacy questionnaire analyzed using the Successive Interval Method and an essay-based test for learning outcomes. Multiple regression analysis, after fulfilling classical assumptions, revealed that self-efficacy and gender significantly influenced learning outcomes simultaneously (F = 1025, p < 0.00). Partially, self-efficacy emerged as a significant predictor, with a positive coefficient (β = 0.585, t = 5.969, p < 0.001), indicating that higher self-efficacy is associated with improved cognitive achievement. Conversely, gender showed no significant partial effect (p > 0.05). Additional correlation analysis indicated a stronger relationship between self-efficacy and learning outcomes in male students (  = 0.545) compared to female students (  = 0.348). Nonetheless, self-efficacy remained the primary explanatory factor for cognitive achievement in both groups. These findings underscore the dominant role of self-efficacy as the key determinant of success in learning circle equations, surpassing the influence of gender.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of learning number patterns in the context of swimming and the relationship between mathematical connection skills and the level of mathematical anxiety of junior high school students in learning number patterns in the context of swimming. This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design with a sample size of 40 eighth-grade students in class VIII B at a junior high school in Telukjambe Timur subdistrict. Data were collected through a mathematical connection ability test and a mathematical anxiety questionnaire. Quantitative data analysis used the effect size formula and Pearson's correlation test to examine the relationship between variables. The results showed that learning number patterns with a swimming context was effective in improving mathematical connection skills and reducing anxiety levels, and there was a significant relationship. This indicates a very strong and positive relationship, where the effectiveness of learning with a swimming context in building mathematical connections is directly proportional to the affective condition of students. Strengthening mathematical connections through a swimming context can be a way to manage students' mathematical anxiety.
