Abstract

Ecotourism is a form of tourism activity that is oriented towards the balance of the ecosystem. Ecotourism demands environmental development and changing community needs. Based on several cases, ecotourism has an impact on the environment. Reality shows that ecotourism activities can provide economic incentives for conservation but also have the potential to affect the quality of environmental degradation if not managed properly. The problem raised in this paper is how to realize the concept of ecotourism and environmental balance so that it does not only become a utopia in sustainability. The method used in this paper is a literature review or literature review by reviewing writings related to ecotourism and sustainability. The result obtained is that the natural environment becomes the main basis as an attraction in ecotourism. Ecotourism that is growing rapidly needs to be anticipated so that it does not exceed the limit resulting in natural and cultural degradation. A strategy is needed so that ecotourism does not cause environmental damage, among others, by utilizing local initiatives related to conservation and paying attention to aspects of the area's carrying capacity to support sustainability efforts. Abstract

The Boschbouw area is one of the heritage landscapes of forestry education from the Dutch East Indies colonial era, shaped by various historical dynamics of functions in Madiun City. Despite its historical value, the region has suffered from visual degradation, functional fragmentation, and loss of identity readability. This research aims to examine the historical dynamics, spatial character, visual quality, and potential for sustainable use of the area. The research method employs a mixed approach, drawing on primary sources from direct observation of four main aspects—ecology, economy and efficiency, equity and safety, as well as aesthetics—and secondary sources including document data, literature, and community perception questionnaires. The results of the analysis show that the area still retains its core elements, but the quality of the space has decreased due to development pressures, dysfunctional irregularities, and a lack of management integration. The analysis emphasizes that the area has strategic value for utilization, supported by historical attractions, creative economic potential, and high public acceptance. This study concludes that utilization should be directed toward strengthening regional identity to develop the Boschbouw area as an adaptive and sustainable landscape.

Abstract

Abstract: Natural lighting and natural ventilation are very important in the architecture of cultural heritage buildings, especially concerning thermal comfort and energy efficiency. This study aims to explore the impact of these two elements on the design of cultural heritage buildings in tropical climates. The method used is a systematic literature review, highlighting the latest relevant scientific articles. The results of the study show that the optimal use of natural lighting and ventilation can improve occupant comfort. A reduction in indoor temperature of up to 5°C can also decrease the energy requirements for cooling and lighting. In addition, passive design strategies that consider building orientation and the use of local materials have proven effective in managing heat and humidity loads. These conclusions are expected to serve as a reference for practitioners and managers of heritage buildings. By applying sustainable design principles, they can maintain the historical integrity of buildings while achieving better energy performance. Abstract

This study examines the meaning of architecture through a semiotic approach, analyzing architectural elements such as façades, ornaments, spatial arrangements, and materials as signs that communicate messages to society. The goal of this research is to explore the relationship between the physical elements of a building (signifiers) and the meanings they convey (signified) within cultural and social contexts. The methodology involves a literature review focused on interpreting symbols, forms, spaces, and materials in architectural design. The results show that architectural meaning is shaped by cultural and social contexts, with design elements reflecting identity, function, and values accepted by users. This research highlights the role of architecture as a dynamic medium of communication, offering new insights into how architectural meanings are constructed and interpreted through the signs embedded in design elements. It broadens the understanding of architecture not only as a physical structure but also as a cultural and ideological expression.
