Abstract

In May 2024, significant tuition fee hikes at Indonesian state universities led to widespread protests and public outcry. Prof. Tjitjik Srie Tjahjandari's response, emphasizing that higher education is a choice rather than a necessity, drew significant attention and criticism. The research aims to critically analyze the ideological meanings in Tjahjandari's statement and explore its impact on public perception and educational policy in Indonesia. The study uses Fairclough's CDA framework to analyze the linguistic features in textual analysis level, production and distribution processes in discursive strategy, and broader social contexts of the statement. Data collection includes the statement's transcript, media reports, and public responses. Textual analysis reveals the use of technical and institutional language that aligns with neoliberal ideologies, lead to describe higher education as an optional, market-driven pursuit. Discursive practice analysis shows the statement's wide media dissemination and critical public interpretation that suggest a perceived shift away from viewing higher education as a public good. Social practice analysis indicates that the statement supports hegemonic processes that commodify education and reduce the state's role in ensuring access. The study concludes that Tjahjandari's statement reflects and constructs ideological meanings that devalue higher education's societal importance and impact its accessibility. Public reactions highlight a demand for more equitable and inclusive educational policies. This research contributes to understanding the role of governmental discourse in shaping educational policy and societal attitudes, advocating for policies that support broader access to higher education.

Abstract

Kemudian, pertukaran sistem dominasi masyarakat menjadi didominasi perempuan. Terakhir, adanya perubahan paradigma laki-laki sebagai korban dominan diskriminasi gender.Kata Kunci: dekonstruksi, dominasi, gender, pembalikan, satireGENDER DECONSTRUCTION IN ÉLÉONORE POURRIAT’S JE NE SUIS PAS UN HOMME FACILEAbstractDeconstruction reveals hidden assumptions and gives rise to new meanings. This study aims to describe the deconstruction contained in the film Je ne suis pas un homme facile by Éléonore Pourriat which aired in April 2018 on the Netflix platform. This descriptive qualitative research analyzes data in the form of dialogue, visual images, and verbal and non-verbal symbols to describe the new meaning hidden in the film. Then, the data is further reviewed through satire theory, radical feminism theory, and gender theory. The result of the analysis shows that Je ne suis pas un homme facile deconstructs gender satirically using humor, parody, irony, and allegory to criticize the injustice caused by patriarchal culture. Satire is depicted through the experiences of the main character Damien and his interactions with the characters in the movie that trigger changes in the form of masculine-feminine reversal of Damien and other male characters who are considered meek and emotional, while female characters are required to be strong and unemotional. The shift in traditional gender roles reflected in Damien's mother as the leader of the household, while his father takes over the domestic role. The exchange of society's domination system to be dominated by women. Finally, there is a paradigm shift of men as the dominant victims of gender discrimination. Keywords: deconstruction, domination, gender, reversal, satire

Abstract

Poetry is one of the literary works whose emotional expression is sometimes difficult to understand. The purpose of this study is to investigate the expression of emotion and its meaning in the poem "Ruang Hijau" by Natasha Rizky. This research implements a descriptive-qualitative paradigm type. Data was obtained from a book entitled "Kamu Tidak Istimewa." This book was written by Natasha Rizky herself. Published by Elex Media Komputindo. The data was obtained by copying and documenting it in a research draft. The process of data analysis in this study involves analysis involving data texts and in-depth analysis of each data text, followed by status analysis. The data text of the book was carefully read line by line to find the essence of each narrative by numbering each line. The results show that this poem contains only two emotional expressions, namely the emotional expressions of sadness and fear. While the expressions of joy, courage, and anger are not found in the poem, Expressions of sadness mean that sadness, pain, and fatigue are experienced. Expressions of fear mean weakness in the face of pressure, while the narrative of struggle symbolizes her hope for help. It also has the meaning of loneliness and longing for help from others.

Abstract

Abstract (Title: Family and State: Space of Self-Negotiation in "Qui A Tué Mon Père" Novel's by í‰douard Louis). Literary work reflects a culture outside its world. A family cannot be separated from society and country in which it is belonged to. Individuals in a family cannot be disconnected from their genetics. This qualitative descriptive study using Bourdieu's theoretical reference aims to describe the habitus, symbolic violence, and the arena of power in the novel "Qui a tué mon père" or "Who Killed My Father" by í‰douard Louis. The results showed that the habitus manifested through the main character "Je" or "I" was obtained through an individual historical process as someone who was born in a poor and a working family that is structurally dominated by society and state. In conclusion, the main character who experienced symbolic violence not only from his family (father and mother) but also from his social environment (neighbor, school, and government) try to negotiate his identity through this novel.   Keywords: habitus, symbolic violence, arena of power, dialectical, structural-constructivist

Abstract

The persistent conflict resulting from distinctions in our diverse world are sustained by suspicion and fear in public life, yet cultural products offer insights into societal issues, highlighting the significance of mutual respect and authentic freedom. This study examined Soumission (2015) by Houellebecq as its main data source to trace Islam and deconstruct intertextually its misconceptions in the novel. This study uses qualitative research steps in literary studies, namely by reading many times data sources, making notes, grouping data thematically, and analyzing it inductively. Results showed that in this novel, Islam is portrayed as a threatening, frightening, ambiguous religion that favors a patriarchal system that places women in a subordinate position. Based on an examination of the Quran and Hadith of Islam reveals that Islam is a peaceful religion that respects its adherents and provides them with clear instructions on what is right and wrong, prohibited and permitted. Critical readers have the right to question the portrayal of Islam in this work if it aims to ridicule religious individuals, particularly Muslims, necessitating a prudent response to counter the author's deception. Keywords: déconstruction, laí¯cité, metanarration, politique, satire

Abstract

Music plays a key role in shaping culture, reflecting societal norms, and serving as a tool for critique. This study examines how Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya challenges traditional gender roles using Derrida’s deconstruction theory, which questions binary oppositions and redefines female autonomy. By analyzing the song’s lyrics and themes, this research explores how popular music can dismantle patriarchal norms and provide a more inclusive understanding of gender and identity. Using a qualitative approach and Derrida’s concepts of différance and binary opposition, the study reveals how the song critiques societal expectations that prioritize women’s physical appearance and passive roles, while emphasizing ambition and independence. Key findings include themes such as: 1) women and appearances, 2) women and identity, 3) women and self-sufficiency, 4) women and materialism, 5) women and control, 6) women and ambition, 7) women and gender expectations, and 8) patriarchy. The song goes beyond rejecting traditional norms; it reconstructs a framework of female identity centered on agency and empowerment. By destabilizing binary oppositions like active/passive and dominant/submissive, the song challenges listeners to engage with entrenched societal values critically. It highlights the importance of breaking free from patriarchal systems that perpetuate gender inequality and reimagines a world where women can define their roles and ambitions without societal constraints. This analysis demonstrates the potential of popular music as a transformative tool for deconstructing oppressive ideologies and fostering more inclusive identities.
