The results showed that feminist education had been implemented in the Kingdom of Kalingga (7th century). There were two models of feminist education in the Kalingga Kingdom era, namely private education and education in dormitories (vihara). Private education was given by parents (rishi and mpu) to their daughters, which included various kinds of knowledge, using weapons and self-defense. Abstract

The 19th century as the peak period of colonization and the golden period of Western travel writing creates a complex context in intercultural interactions and representations of foreign cultures. The travel writing highlights the interactions of Western explorers with cultural diversity and the dynamics of power in intercultural relations. The research aims to analyze the representation of cultural difference and intercultural power relations reflected in 19th century French travel writings. The travel writings used are Voyages autour du monde et naufrages célèbres by Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy (1843) and Un Séjour dans l'île de Java (1898) by Jules Leclercq.  Grounded in Said’s theory of Orientalism, the research shows that representations of cultural difference were shaped by narratives of othering and ethnocentrism, and that intercultural encounters reflected unequal power relations that sustained Western dominance. In this context, 19th century French travel writings reinforced the discourse of orientalism and ethnocentrism, with representations of the East serving as a tool to sustain Western dominance and superiority. This study contributes to the understanding of how 19th century European literary narratives participated in cultural hegemony.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to develop, determine the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of a Lombok-based Indonesian language teaching module for seventh-grade junior high school/MTs students. This type of research is research and development (R&D) with a 4D model (define, design, develop, disseminate). The validation test was conducted by two experts, namely a subject matter expert and a media expert, while the practicality test involved a limited trial involving 16 students and a field trial involving two classes, each with 29 students in the experimental and control classes. Then, the effectiveness test was conducted using SPSS, such as normality test, homogeneity test, independent sample t-test, and N-Gain. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results showed that the teaching module was developed based on four main stages and covered four learning materials, namely descriptive texts, folk poetry texts, fantasy story texts, and procedural texts. Lombok locality was used as the text in each learning activity. The feasibility assessment by experts obtained an average score of 92.10% with a category of very feasible, while the practicality assessment by teachers and students was 81.88% and 84.14% respectively with a category of very practical. The effectiveness test using the Independent Sample t-Test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), which means that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. The N-Gain value of 0.72 (high category) with a 64.95% increase in learning outcomes shows that the teaching module is effective. This module is considered capable of improving learning outcomes, strengthening conceptual understanding, and fostering awareness of local culture in Indonesian language learning. This finding contributes to the innovation of Indonesian language learning that is adaptable to culture, thereby enriching the learning experience and cultural insight of seventh grade junior high school/MTs students.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has led many texts to be freely translated by anyone or anything, including machine translation, without paying attention to the context or linguistic rules, resulting in misleadingly translated texts. Technological advances that allow everyone to have free access to anything have made it easy for anyone to obtain texts. The study used annotated translations to correct the misleading renderings of Putri Ariani’s songs, "Loneliness" and "Perfect Liar." The research utilized a qualitative research design. Data was obtained from the song lyrics. Dictionaries, scientific articles, literary works, reports, books, and other reliable documents provide the data for annotation. We analyzed the data using a translation approach that prioritizes the target text and annotations. The researchers discovered that the annotated literal translation strategy could provide a precise, good, accurate, comparable, and clear reference to the translation of the text or lyrics of Putri Ariani’s Loneliness and Perfect Liar. The translation can also serve as a reference for the correct translation of the songs, as it is based on a reliable foundation. It concluded that annotated translation is more contextually accurate and not misleading. Readers of the translated song lyrics need to clarify and think critically to avoid taking them for granted.

Abstract

Sustainable heritage tourism increasingly depends on the capacity of local communities to act as effective cultural mediators, yet limited attention has been given to the role of foreign language competence as a mechanism of empowerment within heritage institutions. In many heritage destinations, tour guides are expected to communicate complex cultural meanings to international visitors, but insufficient linguistic resources may constrain their professional agency and the quality of heritage interpretation. This study aims to examine how foreign language capacity building functions as a form of community empowerment in a heritage tourism context, with specific reference to heritage tour guides at the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Indonesia. The study adopted a qualitative case study design. Data was collected through systematic observations of training sessions and guided tours, reflective discussions with participating guides, and analysis of training materials and institutional documents. The data were analyzed thematically, guided by empowerment theory and communicative competence theory. The findings indicate that foreign language training enhanced guides’ communicative confidence, interpretive depth, and intercultural awareness. Participants demonstrated greater flexibility in responding to visitor inquiries, improved narrative coherence in explaining cultural and historical meanings, and stronger perceptions of professional legitimacy as cultural representatives. While the training primarily supported psychological and social dimensions of empowerment, it contributed indirectly to cultural sustainability by strengthening heritage mediation practices. These findings suggest that foreign language capacity building has significant implications for sustainable heritage tourism and the operationalization of Sustainable Development Goal 11. Integrating language training into heritage management and community development initiatives can support more inclusive, high quality, and culturally grounded tourism practices.

Abstract

Micro, small, and medium enterprises play a central role in fostering inclusive economic growth, yet many continue to face constraints in accessing wider markets. In increasingly globalized and digitalized business environments, limited foreign language capability has emerged as an underexplored barrier that restricts MSME marketing effectiveness and competitiveness. This study aims to examine how foreign language competence, developed through a structured training and mentoring program, contributes to strengthening MSME marketing practices within a community empowerment context. Adopting a qualitative dominant mixed methods design, the study drew data from participating MSME owners across multiple sectors, including interviews, observations, questionnaires, and analysis of marketing materials produced before and after the intervention. The findings reveal that foreign language capability enhanced participants’ confidence, improved the clarity and functionality of marketing communication, and fostered greater strategic awareness in presenting products to broader audiences. Rather than serving merely as a symbolic attribute, foreign language use functioned as an applied strategic resource that supported more professional branding and customer engagement. However, the results also indicate that capability development was gradual and shaped by contextual constraints such as limited time, digital literacy, and concerns over accuracy. The study contributes to literature by positioning language competence as an intangible form of human capital and strategic capability relevant to MSME competitiveness. Practically, the findings suggest that empowerment programs aligned with sustainable development objectives should integrate foreign language training with applied marketing practice and sustained mentoring to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes.

Abstract

Cultural heritage tourism increasingly requires skilled human mediation to ensure meaningful intercultural exchange and sustainable development. However, many heritage tour guides, particularly those operating within traditional cultural institutions, face limitations in foreign language competence that hinder effective communication with international visitors. Responding to this challenge, this study investigates a foreign language training program implemented for tour guides at Kawedhanan Hageng Panitrapura, Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, Indonesia, and examines its role in community empowerment and local realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. The study aims to analyze how contextually grounded multilingual training contributes to guides’ communicative competence, professional confidence, and cultural representation. A qualitative case study design was employed, drawing on data from post training questionnaires, non-participant observations, and participant reflective feedback involving 22 active heritage tour guides. Data were analyzed thematically using an interpretive framework informed by communicative competence theory, empowerment theory, and education for sustainable development. The findings reveal that the training enhanced participants’ basic communicative abilities in English, French, and German, increased their confidence in interacting with foreign visitors, and strengthened their perception of multilingualism as cultural and professional capital. Contextual and communicative learning activities were identified as particularly effective, while online delivery-imposed constraints on oral interaction and sustained engagement. Beyond linguistic outcomes, the program fostered a stronger sense of professional identity and cultural responsibility among participants. The study concludes that foreign language training embedded within a traditional royal institution can function as a meaningful empowerment mechanism and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals. It highlights the importance of culturally grounded, institutionally legitimate, and partnership-based approaches to language education in heritage tourism contexts.

Abstract

This research begins with the phenomenon of gender inequality that is still represented in the media, including animated films that often depict women in subordinate positions. The animated film Calamity, une Enfance de Martha Jane Cannary was chosen as the object of study because it features a female character who challenges patriarchal social norms in the 19th century. The purpose of this research is to analyze and understand the representation of gender equality in the film through the perspective of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism, by highlighting the female character's struggle to fight patriarchal structures and achieve existential freedom. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a content analysis approach, through observation, documentation, and note-taking techniques. Data were obtained from scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols that depict the main character's struggle to become an independent subject. The results show that the film displays three main forms of equality—namely, working, acquiring knowledge, and rejecting stereotypes—and shows the transformation of the female character from a passive object to an agent of change. In addition, the film also critiques forms of gender injustice such as stereotypes, subordination, and symbolic violence. In conclusion, Calamity is not only a medium of entertainment but also a visual representation of women's struggle to gain existence and equality in the midst of a patriarchal culture.

Abstract

In May 2024, significant tuition fee hikes at Indonesian state universities led to widespread protests and public outcry. Prof. Tjitjik Srie Tjahjandari's response, emphasizing that higher education is a choice rather than a necessity, drew significant attention and criticism. The research aims to critically analyze the ideological meanings in Tjahjandari's statement and explore its impact on public perception and educational policy in Indonesia. The study uses Fairclough's CDA framework to analyze the linguistic features in textual analysis level, production and distribution processes in discursive strategy, and broader social contexts of the statement. Data collection includes the statement's transcript, media reports, and public responses. Textual analysis reveals the use of technical and institutional language that aligns with neoliberal ideologies, lead to describe higher education as an optional, market-driven pursuit. Discursive practice analysis shows the statement's wide media dissemination and critical public interpretation that suggest a perceived shift away from viewing higher education as a public good. Social practice analysis indicates that the statement supports hegemonic processes that commodify education and reduce the state's role in ensuring access. The study concludes that Tjahjandari's statement reflects and constructs ideological meanings that devalue higher education's societal importance and impact its accessibility. Public reactions highlight a demand for more equitable and inclusive educational policies. This research contributes to understanding the role of governmental discourse in shaping educational policy and societal attitudes, advocating for policies that support broader access to higher education.
