Abstract

In this study, CaO/SiO2 composites were prepared from rice husk silica (RH-SiO2) and limestone from a local company. The composites with different mass ratios of CaO to SiO2 (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:5, and 1:10) were synthesized using the sol-gel technique and characterized using XRF, XRD, and SEM. The composites were then used as catalysts for the transesterification of palm oil, with the main purpose to investigate the effect of catalyst compositions on the percentage of conversion of the oil. The results of XRD and SEM confirm the existence of RH-SiO2 as an amorphous material, and CaO as crystalline material, while the composites are a mixture of amorphous and crystalline phases. The catalysts were then used in transesterification experiments and the percentage of oil conversion was calculated. To confirm the successful conversion of palm oil into fatty acid methyl esters, the products of the reactions were analyzed using GC-MS. The experimental results demonstrated that the composites prepared exhibit catalytic activity, with the highest conversion (60%) achieved using the catalyst with the CaO to SiO2 ratio of 1:3.

Abstract

The difference in polarity between materials often prevents direct interaction; therefore, a compatibilizer is required to facilitate reactions between polar and non-polar substances. This study aims to investigate the effect of maleic anhydride (MA) concentration on the grafting process of MA onto polypropylene (PP) chains, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator. The blending method employing an internal mixer was used to combine the materials, and the degree of grafting was determined via titration, with three replicates performed for accuracy. The results indicated that the highest grafting degree, 10.28%, was achieved at a composition of 86% PP, 11% MA, and 3% BPO. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis of polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) revealed new absorption peaks at wavenumbers 1707 cm and 1162 cm. Furthermore, increasing the concentration of maleic anhydride did not significantly affect the grafting degree. This study provides valuable insight for the development of PPg-MA compatibilizers.

Abstract

The hydroxyapatite/alginate (HAp/Alg) composite was synthesized using an in-situ precipitation route. The effect of pH (8, 9, 10, and 11) and calcination temperature (300, 500, 700, and 900 °C) were studied by characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM with EDAX). XRD results show the hexagonal crystal system of HAp for each pH value and the biphase (HAp and whitelockite) for the sintering temperature at 700 and 900 °C. The FTIR spectra show no impurity peaks. SEM images revealed spherical-like (HAp/Alg-11) and flake-like (HAp/Alg-900) particles with good homogeneity, size, and shape that could be notable for biomedical utilization, such as drug delivery material. Drug loading and release ability of pure HAp, HAp/Alg-11, and HAp/Alg-900 composites have been investigated with clindamycin hydrochloride as the drug model. The maximum clindamycin HCl release from HAp, HAP/Alg-11, and HAp/Alg-900 reached 74.48, 92.75, and 69.65% in the 8th hour. HAp/Alg-11 has the highest release because it has the largest surface area of 162.584 m2/g. Antibacterial test results showed HAp/Alg-11 has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, confirming that HAp/Alg-11 composite has the potential to be applied as drug delivery.

Abstract

Removing hazardous non-organic waste containing heavy metals like copper and lead is crucial for environmental protection. Adsorption offers a promising solution, with hydroxyapatite (HAp) serving as a biocompatible adsorbent due to its active surface area. However, its mechanical limitations necessitate enhancement through compositing with chitosan (CTS), a natural biopolymer. This study synthesized hydroxyapatite from cuttlefish bone as a calcium source, while chitosan was extracted from shrimp shells. The hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HAp/CTS) composites were prepared in situ at varying temperatures (55, 60, 65, 70, and 75 °C). The composites were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, and SAA. The result indicated successful integration of HAp and CTS, with a crystallite size of 13.82 nm in the 65 °C composite. Based on SEM-EDS analysis, the HAp/CTS 65 °C morphology was agglomerated chunk particles with a Ca/P ratio of 1.61. The highest adsorption capacity value is found in the HAp/CTS 65 °C composite for both ions, 1.9979 mg/g for Cu2+ ions and 0.9965 for Pb2+ ions. The reusability test results of the HAp/CTS 65 °C composite succeeded up to two cycles. This research proves that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions by HAp/CTS composite adsorbent has been successfully carried out.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess water quality, specifically pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, and turbidity. The research utilizes quantitative methods and covers 15 sampling points across the Timbalun River basin in Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Samples were measured based on several parameters, with three repetitions for accuracy. The testing took place from August to September 2024. The results showed that some water quality parameters, such as pH and total dissolved solids, met the standards outlined by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. However, other parameters, including salinity, conductivity, and turbidity, did not meet the specified thresholds. It is essential to implement treatment measures to ensure the water meets the required standards for its intended use.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from blood cockle shell waste by the sol-gel method, incorporating sodium citrate and urea as additives for Coomassie brilliant blue (CBB) adsorption. The synthesis included HAp without additives (HAp 1) and with 30 g/L of urea and varying sodium citrate concentrations of 0 (HAp 2), 0.1 (HAp 3), 0.2 (HAp 4), 0.3 (HAp 5), 0.4 (HAp 6), and 0.5 (HAp 7) g/L. HAp 4 showed the highest adsorption capacity at 96.60 mg/g. FTIR analysis of HAp 4 revealed adsorption bands for O−H and PO43− groups. XRD analysis indicated a crystal size of 24.55 nm with low crystallinity. SEM-EDS analysis showed a Ca/P ratio of 1.28, with an irregular shape due to agglomeration and an average particle size of 1.16 µm. SAA analysis found a surface area of 107.18 m2/g, a pore size of 12.55 nm, and a pore volume of 0.36 cm3/g. HAp 4 followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order isotherm models in CBB adsorption and demonstrated five-time reusability, proving it to be an effective adsorbent for CBB dyes.
