Abstract

The Teacher Professional Development (TPD) program is a crucial strategy for enhancing teachers' knowledge and skills. The program includes activities that go beyond introducing instructional methods in the classroom and focus on improving teachers' abilities to communicate and collaborate with their peers, community of teachers, leaders, and school partners. There is a scarcity of research presenting TPD data from teacher representatives throughout Indonesia, particularly those using the 2018 TALIS questionnaire developed by the OECD. This mixed-method study collected TPD data from a survey of 410 elementary school teachers in Indonesia and interview data through the FGD method from 53 respondents, including teachers, principals, parent committees, and education offices from several cities in Indonesia. The study's results indicate that TPD programs in Indonesia require improvement and equal implementation both teachers in urban and suburban/rural area. The programs primarily focus on enhancing knowledge, instructional and institutional skills, including organic relationships with peers and school partners. Descriptive data analysis reveals that TPD programs should encourage cooperation and collaboration among teachers at local, national, and international levels. Recommendations for future research should analyze the effect of the TPD program integrated with the Merdeka Curriculum on teachers' committees. This will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the program.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve the early reading skills of second-grade students at SD Inpres Ndindibung through the use of picture–word card media. The study involved 22 students as research subjects and was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. The research instruments included an engagement observation sheet, a decoding error checklist (substitution, omission, inversion), and a reading test measuring accuracy, speed (words per minute/WPM), and literal comprehension. The findings revealed an increase in learning mastery from 45% (pre-action) to 77% (Cycle I) and 91% (Cycle II). Reading speed improved from 39 WPM to 63 WPM, while accuracy rose from 62.8% to 83.4%. These results indicate that the use of picture–word cards strengthens grapheme–phoneme connections and enriches contextual vocabulary, making it effective in enhancing students’ reading fluency. The findings highlight the importance of explicit phonics instruction, guided repeated reading, and visual supports in developing early reading abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of utilizing creative Indonesian traditional dance videos via YouTube as an innovative learning medium in cultural arts education in elementary schools. In addition, it highlights the contribution of audiovisual media in enhancing students’ interest, motivation, and engagement, while also supporting cultural preservation efforts. The research adopts a qualitative approach with Robert K. Yin’s (2009) case study design and employs a descriptive method. Data were collected through two stages of questionnaire surveys (136 teachers in the first stage and 124 teachers in the second stage), in-depth interviews with 18 teachers and prospective teachers selected purposively, and triangulation through thematic analysis, word cloud, and member checking. Strategic analysis was conducted using IFE, EFE, SWOT, and SPACE matrices to formulate strategies for implementing creative dance videos as learning media. The findings reveal that conventional dance learning using printed textbooks resulted in low levels of teacher and student interest and engagement. In contrast, the use of creative dance videos (Kedun Dance, Gegelea Beregam Dance, and Tatagok Dance) significantly increased teacher interest (99.8% interested/very interested), student motivation and engagement (73.4% more active), learning effectiveness (100% reported effective), and teacher creativity (91.9%). The novelty of this research lies in combining a qualitative case study approach with strategic analysis (SWOT and SPACE) to evaluate the use of digital media in cultural arts education. Its main contribution is offering a model for utilizing creative dance videos on YouTube as an innovative tool to enhance the quality of dance learning while strengthening Indonesia’s cultural identity among younger generations.
