Abstract

This research explores the application of literary formulas in Brandon Sanderson’s novel Mistborn: The Final Empire. The research aims to identify the specific narrative formulas employed within the novel’s structure and to map the pattern by which these formulas are integrated to create its compelling narrative. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies Cawelti’s literary formulas and Vogler’s stages of the journey to analyze key scenes, dialogues, passages, and plot events. Data collection involved close reading and detailed note-taking. The findings show that Mistborn integrates three formulas: adventure, mystery, and romance, into the narrative. By mapping the protagonist’s journey onto Vogler’s twelve stages, the study shows a clear pattern where the adventure formula drives the main plot, the mystery intellectually engages the reader, and the romance provides emotional depth. These findings help explain the narrative appeal of the novel and offer a useful framework for understanding how fantasy stories are structurally composed. The study demonstrates how traditional storytelling formulas can be used to create rich and engaging narratives in modern fantasy literature.

Abstract

Code-switching, a bilingual phenomenon in linguistics, refers to the practice of transitioning from one language to another, often between sentences. This practice is significant for understanding bilingual communication and identity expression. While code-switching can manifest across different languages, this study specifically focuses on English-French code-switching used by the main character in Emily in Paris. The research aims to categorize the types of code-switching observed and analyze the function of code-switching used by the main character in Emily in Paris. This research employs a qualitative research approach to comprehensively analyze instances of code-switching in the series. The primary method utilized for data collection involves documentation, utilizing note-taking techniques to thoroughly examine Emily in Paris based on both the movie script and subtitles. The collected data is analyzed through the theory of Appel and Muysken (2005), which classifies code-switching into three types: tag switches, intra-sentential switches, and inter-sentential switches. Additionally, the research explores six functions of code-switching: referential, directive, expressive, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic functions. The analysis shows that Emily utilizes all three types of code-switching in her utterances, as well as various functions of code-switching. However, the predominant type observed is intra-sentential switching, where Emily inserts French terms into her English sentences. Concerning the functions of code-switching, Emily frequently employs the expressive function to emphasize a mixed identity by using English and French within a single conversation. While other functions such as referential, directive, phatic, metalinguistic, and poetic are also present in Emily’s speech, they occur less frequently. However, there are also instances of data that serve two functions of code-switching

Abstract

This study explores how love metaphors are expressed in three selected songs: Guilty as Sin, The Alchemy, and But Daddy I Love Him, from Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album. Language plays a crucial role in conveying abstract emotions like love, and metaphor is a powerful tool for articulating complex feelings in song lyrics. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research analyzes the lyrics through Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, categorizing metaphors into structural, ontological, and orientational types. Data were collected by closely reading the lyrics and noting metaphorical expressions, which were then interpreted within their emotional and thematic contexts. The findings reveal that ontological and structural metaphors dominate, portraying love as poetic storytelling and an evolving emotional journey, while no orientational metaphors were identified. This study highlights how Taylor Swift employs metaphorical language to capture the multifaceted nature of love, heartbreak, and personal transformation, demonstrating the significant role of metaphor in shaping emotional meaning in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of existentialist principles and characterization in Final Destination 5 (2011), directed by Steven Quale. The research aims to identify the methods of characterization used for the five main characters and explore how Sartrean existentialism is reflected in their struggles. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies Kenney’s method of characterization and Sartre’s existentialist framework to analyze key scenes, dialogues, and character interactions. Data was collected through repeated viewings of the film, with critical moments transcribed and categorized based on characterization methods and existential principles. The findings reveal that Final Destination 5 employs a mixed method, with the dramatic method being the most dominant, supplemented by character on other characters and contextual methods to develop psychologically complex main characters. Existentialist principles emerge strongly, particularly the idea that "existence precedes essence," as characters are stripped of predefined roles and forced to define themselves through desperate actions. The burden of freedom and responsibility is evident in moral dilemmas, while the confrontation between anguish and authenticity shapes their responses to impending death. Sam’s journey from fear to acceptance exemplifies Sartrean authenticity, whereas Nathan’s ethical crisis highlights the paradox of human freedom.
