Abstract

Nowadays in the era of globalization, many people use two languages in communication and it is called bilingualism. Bilingualism occurs when speakers and listeners mix languages. This situation is known as code mixing. Code mixing is the use of more than one language in one sentence. Code mixing is not only used in direct communication but also in writing, for example in literature and especially in novels. The phenomenon of code mixing occurs in the novel The Chocolate Thief by Laura Florand. The aims of this study to identify the types of code-mixing and to find out the factors of code mixing used by Laura Florand in The Chocolate Thief novel. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, focusing on narration and utterance of the characters in the novel which contain English France code mixing. The collected data were analyzed by applying Muysken’s theory about the types of code mixing, which includes insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. It also applies Bathia and Ritchie's theory to find out the factors for code mixing, which includes participants roles and relationship, situational factors, message instrinsic factors, and language attitude, dominance, and security. The finding of this study, there are three types and four factors of code mixing. This novel was used code mixing in narration and character utterances. There are three types used, namely insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. Insertion is the most frequently used type. The factors for using code-mixing can be determined from the types of code-mixing used by Laura Florand. From the research findings, four factors were identified, participants roles and relationships, situational factors, message intrinsic factors, and language attitudes, dominance, and security.

Abstract

This study investigates language contestation in the linguistic landscape of Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), a cultural tourism destination in Bali that serves both local and international visitors. The research aims to identify the types of signs in GWK and to analyze how Balinese, Indonesian, and English are represented and contested. Using a descriptive qualitative method with observation and photography, 168 signs were documented across three zones: Street Theatre (71), Kencana Souvenir (51), and Commercial Strip (46) during May–June 2025. The findings show that commercial signs (37.5%) and notice signs (36.3%) dominate, followed by name signs (19%) and mixed signs (7.1%). English is the most visible language, appearing in 43.5% of monolingual signs and frequently in bilingual Indonesian–English signs (41.7%). Indonesian is mainly used in regulatory signs, while Balinese functions symbolically with minimal monolingual presence. Zone-based variations reveal that Kencana Souvenir is strongly English-dominant, Commercial Strip highlights Indonesian in regulatory functions, and Street Theatre shows a more balanced distribution. The study concludes that tourism-driven commercialization shapes linguistic hierarchies and calls for signage policies that strengthen the visibility of local language and cultural identity.

Abstract

Deixis is a linguistic term that functions as referring to or showing something based on the context by using a word. This study aims to find the types of deixis, analyze the functions of each deixis, and identify how context of situation can strengthen the type and the function of deixis in the webtoon comic “Your Letter” by Hyeon A Cho by applying the theory of deixis by Levinson (1983) and the theory of context of situation by Halliday and Hasan (1991). The data were collected from the webtoon comic “Your Letter” by Hyeon A Cho. This study is deskwork research that employs purposive sampling, a non-probability technique. The data were collected using note-taking techniques. A qualitative method and content analysis technique are used to analyze the data found in this study. The data analysis is presented in a descriptive narrative format and an informal method. It is presented using a textual form or a collection of words. The results showed that all deixis types are present in the webtoon, each functions as pointing to the speaker, the addressee, and the third person, time and the location of the event, the portion of the ongoing discourse itself, social relationship. Furthermore, the study revealed that the context of situation explains how those deictic words function dynamically within field, tenor, and mode. The field helps to explain how deixis helps represent a clear background of the utterances. The tenor helps to clarify how deixis encodes the speaker, addressee, and the third-person relation of each participant, as well as the role of each participant. The mode helps to show how deixis is strengthened through expression and speech.
