Abstract

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is one of the spices and medicinal plants which has many benefits and usefulness. Currently ginger production in Indonesia is still very low, du e to limited sources of genes possessed by plant breeders (narrow genetic stock), therefore it is  necessary to  obtain new  genetic diversity. The  purpose of  this  study was  to  conduct exploration activities to collect local ginger germplasm in Southeast Sulawesi to get information in the form of (a) genetic diversity of accessions, (b) determination that can be used to identify germplasm genetic diversity of ginger of Southeast Sulawesi, (c) description of the collected ginger types, for the benefit of ginger crop improvement through breeding programs. This study began with exploration activities, then planting accessions for collection and conservation which will be utilized in various ginger breeding programs. The results of exploration obtained as many as 18 accessions from Kendari, Konawe, Bombana, Muna and Buton regencies. Results of the collection of some areas of Southeast Sulawesi showed that ginger genetic diversity was quite high, seen from the morphological appearances of the rhizome.  Based on the size, shape and color of the rhizome, the ginger accessions of Southeast Sulawesi can be classified into three major groups, i.e. large white/yellow ginger, small white/yellow ginger, and red ginger. White ginger was large and more attractive than red ginger, but less spicy aroma due to its low essential oil content, and less disease resistant, but high productivity. Keywords: ginger, Zingiber officinale, genetic diversity

Abstract

The growing population and increasing demand for space have made spatial planning a critical component of sustainable development. In a campus environment, efficient spatial organization supports both academic and social functions. With Lakidende University experiencing a rise in student numbers, strategic space utilization has become essential. This study analyzes the spatial development direction of Lakidende University based on building coefficient, accessibility, and building functions. A qualitative approach with a quantitative descriptive design was applied. Data were collected through field observations, documentation, and document review. Key variables included the building coverage ratio (minimum 30%), accessibility, and functional use of buildings. The analysis compared existing campus conditions with relevant spatial regulations. Tools such as ArcGIS and SketchUp supported site planning analysis. The findings indicate that Lakidende University, spanning 30,000 m², has 27,197.16 m² of non-buildable land (8.1%), while the current building coefficient reaches the minimum threshold of 30%. The available development area is 8,159.15 m². Based on the number of students, lecturers, and staff in 2023, projected spatial needs for new faculty buildings, a library, canteens, parking, and open areas amount to 5,964.5 m². This remains within the allowable development area. The results demonstrate adequate space for future expansion. This research offers fresh insight into campus spatial planning at Lakidende University, addressing previously unexamined gaps. By evaluating land use coefficients, accessibility, and spatial functions, the study presents practical strategies for efficient space management to support long-term institutional growth and sustainability.

Abstract

Abstract

Community welfare is a fundamental objective in achieving sustainable and equitable development, particularly in regions facing persistent urban–rural disparities. Despite various policy interventions, including fiscal transfers and targeted development programs at local levels, the determinants of community welfare remain a subject of debate. This study examines the key economic determinants of community welfare in Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, focusing on economic growth, income inequality, labor absorption, infrastructure availability, and investment. Using panel data regression analysis, this study investigates the causal relationships between these economic factors and community welfare across districts and cities in Southeast Sulawesi from 2012 to 2021, based on data from the Central Statistics Agency. The results indicate that labor absorption, income inequality, infrastructure development, and investment have significant effects on community welfare. Employment emerges as the most influential factor, suggesting that higher labor absorption plays a critical role in improving welfare outcomes. Income inequality shows a significant negative effect, indicating that increasing disparities reduce overall welfare. Infrastructure development and investment positively contribute to welfare by enhancing public services and expanding employment opportunities. In contrast, economic growth demonstrates a weaker impact compared to other determinants. This study contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence that community welfare is more strongly influenced by employment creation and inequality reduction than by economic growth alone. The findings offer important policy implications for regional development planning, emphasizing the need for inclusive, labor-oriented, and infrastructure-supported development strategies to enhance welfare in developing regions.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has created a wave of uncertainty that has led to economic failure and disruption, particularly in the micro and small business sector. This study aims to analyze the impact of the pandemic on MSMEs, using a case study in Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi. This study uses primary data collected from 100 MSMEs in Kendari City through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews, using a stratified random sampling method. The variables analyzed included income, number of employees, turnover, business capital, and marketing strategies before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Data analysis was conducted using independent t-tests and fixed effects estimation to identify the impact of the pandemic on MSME performance and strategies. The analysis shows that the pandemic crisis has significantly impacted the economic system, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises, as reflected in decreased income and disrupted employment, which in turn has led to increased unemployment. This impact has also affected business turnover and prompted changes in marketing strategies. Nearly 60% of MSMEs in Kendari City have experienced economic difficulties since the pandemic emerged in Indonesia. In Southeast Sulawesi, the decline in MSME performance is predicted to be primarily due to the low utilization of technology in product marketing, which is limited by the availability of funds.
