Abstract

Efforts to continuously improve teacher competence need to be supported by the availability of empirical data through various studies. Data on teacher competence in Indonesia have so far been carried out by the government through the National Teacher Competency Test (NTCT) whose instruments were prepared based on indicators of professional teachers who master the competencies of the field of study and pedagogical competencies. The result was that most teachers in Indonesia did not pass the competency test. This article tries to describe user-based teacher competencies in this case, students. How students evaluate their teachers will be able to be a portrait from a different angle with NTCT. Through a questionnaire on student perceptions of teacher performance in online learning, it can provide an overview of the level of user satisfaction with teacher performance. The study involved 569 high school students from public and private schools, as well as urban and rural schools. The questionnaire was conducted through a google form and the results showed that according to student assessments, teachers were relatively ready to manage online learning. Passing the second year of online learning has been well addressed by teachers in improving self-competence. According to students, teachers are capable to use various technology platforms and media in virtual learning.

Abstract

Metacognition is central to language learning because it encompasses the processes that govern the efficient use of learning strategies. It is especially important as a way to address language learners’ issues of limited repertoire of strategies and their application. While much research on language learning strategies  have been related to the learning of English, this study observes the increasingly appealing French as an additional language hence French as a Foreign Language (FFL) is gaining importance. This research was carried out by examining some similarities and differences in models of learning strategies of FLE students in three ASEAN countries.  The present study aims to investigate into FFL learners’ metacognitive strategies which contribute to the development of learners’ autonomy, despite the different contexts of study in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. This study is descriptive qualitative research involving 56 students from three universities in Bangkok (Thailand), Hanoi (Vietnam) and Yogyakarta (Indonesia) as an ad-hoc sample to study their French Language Education (FLE) learning strategies. Using a Metacognitive Strategy Questionnaire (MSQ), this study result in a few insights of FFL learning process. The participants showed a consistent metacognitive strategy in terms of planning, monitoring and evaluating. Even though they are located in different countries, these strategies are proved to contribute to their autonomy as an FFL learner with different specificities.

Abstract

Language politeness is part of an attitude that contains the value of politeness in everyday interactions. Politeness will always be reflected in the level of speech (language). This needs to get attention in learning French as an effort to help second language learners, so they can use it in communication. The object of this research is the form of speech used in communication via WhatsApp by students to lecturers according to the context of language politeness. Data collection was carried out using observation techniques, namely by reading carefully the utterances containing student language politeness contained in the lecturer's WA. Data analysis was carried out from the beginning, the researchers collected data using the model proposed by Ricoeur, namely with semantic, reflective, and existential understanding. The results showed that in representing politeness in language, students used various utterances such as (a) greetings, (b) apologies, (c) regrets, (d) introducing themselves before conveying their meaning. In addition, there are also speeches that reduce the politeness of students in speaking, such as: starting a conversation without using greetings and introducing themselves. Therefore, competence in matters relating to the socio-cultural of the French language must be mastered by the learner (students) in order to be able to use the learned French appropriately and politely. Keywords:  french, language, learners, politeness

Data was collected by using corpus-based method and corpus tools (SketchEngine and AntConc) as research instrument. Data, then, was analyzed using the CACDA or the combination of corpus linguistic and critical discourse analysis. The results of this study are: (1) ‘the police’ were more dominantly positioned as subjects in the news report (4 datas), while the most dominant position of the object is occupied by the ‘the perpetrator of sexual harassment’ (4 datas). 3 datas, among all 5 datas, marginalized women as the victims of sexual harassment through the word construction, whereas the other 2 datas showed the author’s side with the victims. (2) on 1 data, the authors combined the mediation and cultural code processes, while on 4 other datas the authors used only the mediation process. Though most of the the readers’ comments were accusing and blaming the perpetrator, yet some of them still marginalized women. The novelty of this study is the implementing Sara Mill’s critical discourse analysis on CACDA method.

Abstract

This article is about a socio-pragmatic study on the language used by theJavanese society which has some speech levels (or unggah-ungguh in Javanese)called ngoko, krama madya, and krama inggil and the language used by the Bataksociety which does not have such speech levels. The difference concerning speech levels between the two societies isinfluenced by their traditional ways of living. The traditional Javanese society isdivided into two levels: the priyayi (or the nobility) and wong cilik (or thecommoner) levels. A priyayi uses ngoko in communicating with a wong cilik butthe latter cannot use it in communicating with the former. In such a case, the wongcilik uses krama inggil. This seems to indicate that solidarity in the Javanesesociety is poor. On the other hand, the Batak society does not have such levels sothat there are no speech levels in its language. Though the Batak society has manymargas, which means that any members of the society having the same last namebelong to the same marga and are regarded as members of the same family (therelevant term is dongan sabutuha), they are obliged to help other people who donot belong to their marga because the philosophy of the Batak society is dalihan natolu, which explains that solidarity in the Batak society is very important. Keywords: socio-pragmatic, ways of living, speech levels, solidarity

Abstract

Japanese is one of the foreign languages taught in formal and informal educational institutions in Indonesia. The development of Japanese language learners is increasing quantitatively. In foreign language courses, native and non-native teachers collaborate on pedagogical tasks. This trend is also happening in Japanese foreign language courses. In addition, there are around 6,617 non-native Japanese language teachers (Japan Foundation, 2021). There is an argument that Native Japanese Speaker Teacher's (NJST) has many advantages over Native Japanese Speaker Teacher's (NNJSTs) and that students prefer NNJSTs over NJST, but the argument must be assessed. Many researchers have explored students' perceptions of NJSTs and NNJSTs worldwide in formal education institutions but not in the non-formal education institution sector. This study aims to explore the perception of Indonesian students towards NNJSTs in non-formal educational institutions, namely LPK Fuji Academy Singaraja with all samples coming from active students registered from January to August 2024. This study is a quantitative research with a descriptive approach conducted using an instrument in the form of a closed questionnaire based on the Likert scale. This study revealed that the perception of male and female students did not have a significant difference in their teaching competence based on the theory of Nuibe et al (2006). Male participants rated NNJSTs higher in terms of teaching effectiveness and communication skills, with an average score of 9.8. In contrast, female respondents gave slightly lower ratings in these areas with an average of 7.1. Furthermore, through this research, students need NNJSTs more because they allow for a successful learning process because of effective learning strategies. In addition, NNJSTs also help students in facing difficulties and challenges in their learning process.
