Abstract

News related to sexual violence against women in mainstream media often lacks a gender perspective and fails to adhere to the applicable journalistic code of ethics. As a result, this contributes to the perpetuation of the stigma of victims in society and hinders efforts to eradicate cases of sexual violence. Magdalene is one of the feminist media that has the mission of fighting patriarchy and bringing feminist issues closer to the public. This research aims to look at the framing of news related to sexual violence issues in the Magdalene media and how the news can accommodate the principles of gender journalism. The theories used are Agenda Setting Theory and Social Reality Construction Theory and Robert N. Entmant's framing analysis model is used as the research method. The research results show framing Magdalene has the propensity to voice difficulties associated with the subject of sexual violence by looking at it from the victim's perspective and the injustices encountered by the victim. Based on the results of framing analysis on 21 articles on sexual violence against women in Magdalene, four representations were found to consist of, the issue of sexual violence as a result of strong patriarchal ideology, the issue of sexual violence has not been handled because it is still considered a private issue, the legal system for cases of sexual violence in Indonesia has not been in the perspective of the victim, and the handling of sexual violence cases in Indonesia has not taken the side of the victim. The whole article at Magdalene related to the issue of sexual violence against women have accommodated the principles of journalism from a gender perspective, this is demonstrated by the existence of a perspective that is pro-victim, efforts to prioritize the psychological condition of victims and their recovery, as well as advocacy aimed at making social changes to help victims get better treatment in their environment and society, and the fulfillment of human rights that provide legal protection and justice. In addition, it is displayed through selecting topics that focus on gender inequality, including labeling in society, stereotypes against female victims, and marginalization and subordination.

Abstract

Differences in hearing conditions and ways of communication in the committed romantic relationship of Deaf-hearing couples encourage individuals to conduct adjustments and apply relationship maintenance behaviors to achieve the desired ideal point of the relationship. On the other hand, these differences have the potential to cause miscommunication and conflict in Deaf-hearing couples. This study aims to understand the maintenance in committed romantic relationships of Deaf-hearing couples and to describe the conflicts, dialectics, and the conflict resolution in committed romantic relationships. The theories that are used in this research are Relational Dialectics Theory and Equity Theory. This study uses the interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach and data collection method of in-depth interviews conducted with six individuals from three Deaf-hearing couples. The result of this study reveals that the communication adjustments made by Deaf and hearing individuals in their relationships take place from the development until maintenance stage of the relationships. Each individual accomodates their partner’s way of communication by using verbal communication and sign language in daily communication context. Each Deaf-hearing couple apply relationship maintenance to achieve the desired ideal relationship, prevent conflicts, and maintain commitment in their marriages. Other than that, the difference in hearing conditions is not the main conflict object but is a cause of miscommunication and small conflicts in Deaf-hearing couples. Conflict resolution in Deaf-hearing couples is conducted through several strategies such as withdrawal, turn-taking, and the involvement of a mediator. Based on the results above, recommendations for future research is to examine how miscommunication arises when hearing partners act as sign language translators, how Deaf individuals sacrifice by prioritizing the use of verbal communication, and to apply mixed methods to study Deaf-hearing committed romantic relationship.

Abstract

The development of media in Indonesia is so rapid as marked by the increasing number of online media. However, this is not followed by an increase in the quality of reporting. There are still violations committed by the media which have resulted in complaints to the Press Council because online media prioritizes speed and virality. In addition, news content also still features negative reporting which can have a negative impact on the psychology of society. This can lead to a decrease in public trust in the mass media. One way to minimize the negative impact on psychology and increase public trust in the media is to apply constructive journalism. One theory that is relevant to constructive journalism is the social responsibility theory of the press. Theoretical studies and constructive journalism are analyzed in this study which focuses on how to implement constructive journalism at JEO Kompas.com using the quantitative content analysis method. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of constructive journalism in JEO Kompas.com news. This study shows that most of the news is hard news (76.7%). Kompas.com JEO news is also dominated by socio-cultural topics as much as 39.5%. Furthermore, most of the news (53.5%) includes the event rubric type. Through descriptive reports and cross-tabulation results, the results of the study show that JEO Kompas.com news tends to implement some elements of constructive journalism with a percentage of 75.2%. News that implemented all elements was found to be less (10.8%) than news that did not implement any elements at all (13.9%). The most implemented elements are all Future Orientation elements (46.5%). Meanwhile, the elements that are mostly implemented are Co-Creation elements. There is not a single piece of news that implements all the elements of Empower People or Co-Creation. Apart from that, the implementation of constructive journalism is also determined by the news format, topic, and type of rubric. Therefore, it is hoped that journalists and the media can prioritize the implementation of constructive journalism in journalistic work so as to increase public trust and at the same time improve the quality of people's lives.

Abstract

Family is often used as a topic of discussion in the media, especially movies. So that it will indirectly form a dominant ideology regarding the concept of family represented in the film. The conception of family in films generally emphasizes the concept of a nuclear family based on heterosexual couples with dominant attributes attached to it so that families outside of this thinking can be marginalized. This research will examine how alternative families in the anime Spy x Family that have been contextualized in a queer context are represented. The purpose of this research is to see how this anime depicts alternative families. This research uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method. The analysis consists of two levels, namely denotative, connotative, and myth, which are used to see the meaning in the Spy x Family anime scene. This research uses queer theory as a framework but in order to show the form of heterosexual performativity in families that offer alternatives beyond that. The results of this study indicate that the alternative family shown in the Spy x Family anime is a form of family that is classified as queer because the family in this anime is formed on the basis of bonds of interest and the division of family roles that are not based on gender or sexuality. However, the alternative family is not fully categorized as queer. The family in the Spy x Family anime still contains some dominant concepts such as the gradual growth of emotional bonds and the division of roles that slowly follow heteronormative rules. The father's role is shown as a superior figure so that the father has an important role in almost every aspect of the family. Meanwhile, the mother's role tends to be shown in a more passive manner where this anime displays the mother's fear and worry of not being able to meet the standards of mothers in general who are known to be feminine. Through this, it also indirectly shows that this alternative family still contains a deep-rooted patriarchal culture in it. The role of children is also still in the dominant thinking where children are tasked with learning and helping parents. The existence of pets that are considered as family also still shows that the family in the Spy x Family anime is still in the dominant concept because it carries the humanization of animals which is normal in today's families. So, it can be concluded that the alternative family in the Spy x Family anime is still trapped in the thinking of the dominant family so that the family's alternativeness begins to fade and follows the rules of the dominant family.

Abstract

Indonesia menduduki peringkat ketiga sebagai fatherless country menurut survei Fatherhood Institute’s Fairness in Families Index.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to explain the experience of cross-cultural environment adaptation in international students and what makes international students able to overcome the crisis. The phenomenon of adaptation in a cross-cultural environment is an interesting phenomenon to study because cultural barriers are some of the things that most often cause international students to fail to complete their studies abroad. Many people who are in a new environment face culture shock, which is believed to be a normal condition. However, the level of disturbance experienced by the individual can differ from one person to another. This study uses two concepts, namely u-shaped curve and cross-cultural adaptation theories. The u-shaped curve concept has four stages of adaptation process namely honeymoon phase, crisis, recovery, and adjustment Moreover, the cross-cultural adaptation concept believes that individuals’ capacity for communicating in accordance with new cultural norms and values depends on their ability to change or adapt. It is made up of three crucial elements namely acculturation, deculturation, and assimilation. Each informant is able to be identified with a different process of cross cultural adaptation. There are three findings in this study. First, u-shaped curve theory may not prove for a number of adaptation processes in general. Second, international students undergo different processes of cross-cultural adaptation in cross-cultural environments. Third, what makes international students overcome the crisis include several strategies.

Abstract

This interpretive qualitative research has aim to understand the speech code and logic of tolerance in conservative community. Based on the Ethnography of Communication, data is collected through WhatsApp groupchat and interview which later analysed with The Speech Code Theory (Gerry Philipsen) that resulting codes of tolerance that then elaborated using Social Identity Theory (Tajfel&Turner) in generating codes. The result of this research is: first, Code of Honor and Dignity. This code creates logic of Victim Perspective, namely the feeling of the ingroup as victims of getting pitted against each other by the outgroup which is based on the concept of Aqidah and Morals that the ingroup believed in. Second, the dominant code referring to Code of Outgroup namely act of excluding outgroup due to differences of perspective from each religion. This code also arises in fellow Muslim that has different ways in interpreting Islam. The logic appears due to protecting fellow Muslim from influence of the non-Muslim where later represent the existence of stratification among Muslim. Third, Phrases for Moral Judgments and codes of Prejudice emerging logic of moral and prejudice. This logic refers to direct judgments for outgroup based on moral superiority feeling of ingroup with the purpose of revealing the true face of Islam based on Quran and Hadist, where later arises group identity as the true believer of Islam. Those identity arises due to the urge of improving the face of Islam that perceived as old fashioned, radical, or even terrorist. However, code of non-verbal also arises in the chatgroup as a complimentary during conversation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe consumer perceptions of global branding using product placement strategies in Korean dramas. Qualitative research is a research method that provides descriptive data in the form of written or spoken words from individuals and the behavior of observed phenomena. The research "Consumer Perception of Global Branding: Kopiko Product Placement in Korean Drama" uses a qualitative descriptive approach. This method involves capturing and explaining consumers' perceptions and experiences about their opinions of Kopiko in Korean dramas. The result was that the product placement successfully increased brand exposure and strengthened the consumer experience with the identification of three distinct consumer perceptions. Despite the success, the study highlights the need for brand consistency and effective messaging, as well as the importance of emphasizing brand distinctive features such as the use of real coffee beans to reinforce identity and meet consumer expectations. Furthermore, cultural sensitivity to brand associations with Korean culture influences consumer perceptions, while Martin Roll's global branding theory provides insight into how factors such as brand recognition, unique value, consumer experience, consistency, and cultural sensitivity affect consumer perceptions
