Abstract

Verbal parallelism is a stylistic device frequently employed in public and religious discourse to enhance rhythm, emphasis, and memorability. This study investigates the use of verbal parallelism in Reverend Mariann Budde’s sermon delivered at the 2025 United States presidential inauguration prayer service. The research aims to explore how verbal parallelism functions stylistically in the sermon and how it contributes to highlighting key messages. A qualitative research design was employed, using documentation and analysis of the sermon transcript as the primary data source. The analysis identified eight types of verbal parallelism based on Leech’s (1969) classification. The findings revealed that seven types verbal parallelism was deliberately and systematically used throughout the sermon. Anaphora was found to be the most frequently used type, followed by homoioteleuton, epistrophe, symploce, polyptoton, anadiplosis, and antistrophe. On the whole, this study confirms that verbal parallelism serves as an effective stylistic strategy in public and religious discourse.

Abstract

This study explores the role of humor in developing students’ creative writing skills and cultural awareness in higher education contexts. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research involved undergraduate students enrolled in a Creative Writing course at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of students’ literary works produced through humor-based learning activities. The findings reveal that humor serves as an effective pedagogical resource that stimulates imagination, facilitates idea generation, and creates an enjoyable learning environment that encourages active participation in writing activities. Students demonstrated improvements in thematic originality, creative expression, imagery, and the ability to reinterpret everyday experiences through literary language. Furthermore, humor contributed to the development of cultural awareness by enabling students to reflect on social realities, local traditions, and cultural values embedded in humorous narratives and experiences. Through the process of transforming humorous observations into literary texts, students developed a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and a greater sensitivity toward social issues within their communities. Despite challenges related to diction, figurative language, and maintaining stylistic consistency, the findings suggest that humor-based learning provides an innovative and meaningful approach to creative writing instruction. The study highlights the potential of humor as both an affective and experiential learning resource for fostering creativity, cultural literacy, and reflective engagement in literary education.

Abstract

Historical tourism sites contain cultural, architectural, symbolic, and social meanings that may be difficult for school-age children to interpret through factual explanation alone. This narrative literature review examines how storytelling can support heritage engagement among children aged approximately 6–12 years and how this engagement can inform creative-industry development. Fourteen academic and institutional sources published between 1990 and 2025 were purposively synthesized across five themes: heritage interpretation, child-centered learning, site-based experience, digital and transmedia storytelling, and creative-industry pathways. The reviewed literature indicates that oral, visual, performative, digital, and gamified storytelling can support imagination, emotional connection, inquiry, and cultural awareness when narratives are linked to authentic places and participatory activities. Potential creative outputs include educational tours, children’s publishing, animation, games, augmented and virtual reality, workshops, performances, and culturally grounded merchandise. The article proposes a five-stage framework connecting heritage resources, child-centered narrative design, site-based experience, creative production, and cultural engagement outcomes. Its contribution is to integrate educational, heritage, and creative-industry perspectives while emphasizing historical accuracy, community participation, child safeguarding, accessibility, intellectual property, and fair benefit sharing. Because the review is narrative and based on a limited purposive corpus, the framework requires further testing through site-specific empirical studies

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study explores the implementation of differentiated instruction in teaching Bahasa Indonesia to foreign speakers, focusing on how adaptive teaching strategies address linguistic and cultural barriers while enhancing learners' communicative competence. Differentiated instruction allows educators to modify content, processes, and assessments based on students’ varying proficiency levels, learning preferences, and cultural contexts creating an inclusive and engaging language-learning environment. Methodology: A qualitative case study approach was employed to provide an in-depth understanding of instructional practices. The participants were 20 foreign students (8 males and 12 females) from diverse countries enrolled in a Bahasa Indonesia course at the State University of Surabaya. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns in instructional adaptation, learner engagement, and classroom implementation challenges. Main Findings: The results demonstrated that differentiated instruction significantly improved students’ language acquisition, participation, and motivation. Learners benefited from varied learning activities, technology-enhanced tools, and flexible assessment approaches that accommodated different linguistic abilities and cultural backgrounds. Nevertheless, the study identified challenges in lesson preparation time and teachers’ capacity to maintain instructional consistency. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers one of the first comprehensive examinations of differentiated instruction in the context of Bahasa Indonesia as a foreign language. It offers a culturally responsive pedagogical model that bridges linguistic diversity with inclusive education principles, providing theoretical and practical guidance for educators seeking to enhance equitable, learner-centered language teaching practices in multicultural classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of a functional pragmatic approach in developing students' contextual understanding of literary works. The functional pragmatic approach emphasizes the importance of context in interpreting text meaning, considering the social, cultural, and situational backgrounds that influence communication in literature. In literature education, this method helps students go beyond understanding the literal content of a text. It encourages them to explore the deeper layers of meaning by considering the relationship between the author, the reader, and the broader societal context in which the text was produced. The research employs a qualitative case study design, engaging literature students as participants to examine how this approach is implemented in real classroom settings. The study utilizes several data collection techniques, including observations, interviews, and document analysis. These methods allow the researcher to comprehensively understand how the functional pragmatic approach is applied during literature lessons and its impact on students' comprehension. The findings indicate that this approach significantly enhances students' ability to critically analyze the meaning of texts and deepen their understanding of the social and cultural contexts embedded in the literature.Additionally, it fosters an appreciation for the values and messages conveyed through literary works. The study's implications suggest that incorporating a functional pragmatic approach in literature instruction could powerfully support the development of students' contextual understanding and critical thinking skills. By emphasizing the importance of context in literary analysis, this approach can help students engage with texts on a deeper level, making literature more meaningful and relevant to their lives.
