Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

ASTM A216 WCB is a cast carbon steel material commonly used in valve components due to its good mechanical properties and resistance to high temperatures. One of the major issues encountered in its application is surface wear. To enhance surface hardness and wear resistance, a hardfacing process was conducted using the GTAW welding method. This involved the application of buffer layers using ER308 and ER309 filler metals, followed by hardfacing layers of Stellite 12. A total of four specimens were prepared with varying combinations of buffer and hardfacing layer numbers. The visual inspection results indicated the absence of surface defects in all specimens, demonstrating good welding quality. Dye penetrant testing revealed a non-relevant indication on specimen 3 with a size of 1.3 mm, which remains within the acceptable limits as per ASME Section IX standards. Macroscopic examination showed sound fusion between layers, free from defects such as porosity or cracks. The deepest weld penetration was observed in specimen 4, which used the ER309 buffer layer, achieving a depth of 1.5 mm. Overall, the use of ER308 and ER309 buffer layers significantly influenced the quality of the hardfacing welds, contributing to the formation of homogeneous and defect-free layers. This study provides valuable insight into material selection and welding parameters to improve wear resistance in ASTM A216 WCB-based valve components within industrial environments.

Abstract

Replating the ship’s hull is an essential repair process to ensure that a vessel remains operationally seaworthy. Replating welding can be performed under both docking and floating conditions. These differing conditions influence the cooling rate, which in turn can result in variations in hardness (HV). This study examines the effect of varying the distance from the waterline (30, 60, 100, and 130 mm) and water temperature (25°C, 28°C, 30°C, and 32°C) on the hardness values produced during welding under floating conditions. Each variation combination was tested using the Vickers method with three repetitions, and the reported HV values represent the average of those measurements. The results show that the highest hardness value under floating conditions reached 218.5 HV (30 mm, 25°C), while the lowest was 195.7 HV (130 mm, 32°C). All measured hardness values remained within the acceptable limits specified by BKI for low-carbon steel. This study demonstrates that the closer the weld groove is to the water surface and the lower the water temperature, the higher the resulting hardness due to increased cooling rates. The limitations of this study include the absence of microstructural data and the unavailability of individual measurement data for further statistical analysis.

Abstract

The outer shell of an ISO tank plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of its contents by withstanding temperature fluctuations, pressure, and radiation. Research on the fabrication of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank outer shells therefore provides both scientific and practical value, particularly in ensuring mechanical reliability and structural performance. This study investigates the welding of American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) A36 steel plates using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and evaluates the effect of welding parameters on mechanical and microstructural properties. Four specimens were prepared by varying welding current at 70 and 80 A on plate thicknesses of 4 and 12 mm. The results indicate that both current and thickness significantly influence the weld zone microstructure, with transformations from ferrite–pearlite in the base metal to widmanstätten and acicular ferrite in the weld metal. In terms of mechanical performance, the highest hardness value of 198.387 HVN was recorded in the 4 mm specimen welded at 70 A, demonstrating the strong dependence of hardness on combined current and thickness conditions. These findings contribute to optimizing welding parameters for the safe and reliable application of LNG tank outer shells.

Abstract

The selection of transportation fleets plays a crucial role in determining the cost efficiency of logistics operations. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of investing in company-owned vehicles compared to using third-party rental services on the Bandung–KTSH route operated by PT X. Using a quantitative approach with a causal associative design, this research applies the Vehicle Operating Cost (VOC) method supported by investment feasibility analysis tools including Cash Flow, Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period (PBP). The analysis shows that the average daily operational cost of company-owned vehicles reaches IDR 1.904.479, which is higher than the rental cost of IDR 1.865.385 per day. Additionally, the results show a negative NPV (-IDR 344.739.419), negative IRR (–11%), and an unattainable payback period within the 5-year investment horizon. Therefore, it is concluded that using leased vehicles is more cost-efficient than investing in company-owned trucks for this specific route.   DOI: https://doi.org/10.51557/yknegr07
