Abstract

Since 2016 acoustic detection technology for marine resources had been developed which was relatively simple and sophisticated, namely Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing. The technology was useful for monitoring and quantifying underwater targets such as marine resources and the environment that can be conducted continuously, sustainable, in situ, real-time, and low cost. This research had designed an Ocean Acoustic Remote Sensing technology instrument to detect signal propagation range. The step taken in this research was to build an acoustic device system such as transmitter and receiver based on TR-103 transmitting transducer sensor and Benthos Aq-1 receiving transducer. Based on the experiment results, the transmitter and receiver designed were confrmed with the measured piezoelectric quantity specifcations. The results at open ocean in the Thousand Islands showed the detection range of transmitter signal propagation to the receiver was 100 m.

Abstract

AUV is an unmanned submersible platform to accomplish a mission. Side-scan sonar, Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD), and underwater video camera are usually attached on AUV. These sensors were used for identifying seawater and seabed condition. Data acquired from a survey with an AUV in Kepulauan Riau processed by Neptus software. Side-scan sonar (SSS) visualization is compared to the video image. SSS signal visualization has a unique pattern that can be identified within the video image. Different substrate structure caused different signal visualization.  The relation between the video image and SSS visualization can be used for identifying habitat benthic profile.

Abstract

Gas hydrate is a type of hydrocarbon formed like crystals and is formed in the seabed sediment layer. Water temperature and pressure affected the area where gas hydrates are formed; gas hydrates are composed of gas and water elements. Gas hydrates have the potential as an alternative to current uses of oils and gasses. The identification of gas hydrates on the seabed can be detected using low-frequency acoustic, seismic technology. This research aims to identify the presence of gas hydrate in Aru Sea waters based on changes in the seismic character of the gas hydrate. The method used is seismic data processing with ProMAX software. This research uses seismic data for the 3.01 trajectory acquired by the Marine Geology Research and Development Center in 2016 in the Aru Sea. Based on the data processed, gas hydrate was detected on the 3.01 line with a depth of 5,925 meters. Gas hydrate indicator on the seabed is characterized by cutting stratigraphy, reversing its polarity, high amplitude, and shape following the seabed.

Abstract

Acoustic transducer is a source level component in the sonar equation that is indispensable as an underwater acoustic energy source, with a certain emission pattern called beamforming. In this research, we designed the construction of a driver circuit to trigger a piezoelectric (PZT) transducer to produce an acoustic energy beam for the purpose of detecting underwater targets. The manufacture of an acoustic driver with a simple working principle has been carried out to provide transmit (TX) and receive (RX) commands. The RX module will receive the acoustic signal from the TX and the results are recorded for analysis. The mixing of the information signal with noise makes the information obtained cannot be directly verified so that a signal processing process is needed to be able to separate the information signal and noise. Calibration using a spherical target was carried out to determine the detection results and the acoustic intensity level. Signal analysis and visualization methods use Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and wavelets.

Abstract

An accurate mapping of ocean seabed is needed to answer the challenges faced by the marine scientist today. Sub-bottom profiler present as one of the acoustics system which used to describe the sediment layer profile of the ocean bottom, as well as the thickness of the layer and the stratigraphy. The purpose of this research is to describe the 2D profile and to determine the value of the reflection coefficient of the sediment layers in Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi. The reflection coefficient is necessary to be analyzed related to the seabed sediment grain size and type. The data acquisition carried out using Syqwest Stratabox sub-bottom profiler with the frequency of 10 kHz. FFT signal processing and bandpass filter are applied to relieve noise from main signals as well as to get better results. The results of data processing show that seafloor sediments have a value of the surface reflection coefficients which ranged between 0.1168 until 0.7938 with type iron smooth sand.

Abstract

Classification of seabed types from multibeam echosounder data using machine learning techniques has been widely used in recent decades, such as Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Nearest Neighbor (NN). This study combines the two most frequently used machine learning techniques to classify and map the seabed sediment types from multibeam echosounder data. The classification model developed in this study is a combination of two machine learning classification techniques, namely Support Vector Machine (SVM) and K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN). This classification technique is called SV-KNN. Simply, SV-KNN adopts these two techniques to carry out the classification process. The SV-KNN technique begins with determining test data by specifying support vectors and hyperplanes, as was done on the SVM method, and executes the classification process using the K-NN. Clay, fine silt, medium silt, coarse silt, and fine sand are the five main classes produced by SVKNN. The SV-KNN method has an overall accuracy value of 87.38% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.3093.

Abstract

Detection of seabed can be obtained with a high resolution using side scan sonar instrument. This instrument also provides geospatial information of underwater target. This paper aims are to visualize and to interpret side scan sonar imagery both qualitatively and quantitatively, to analyse acoustic backscatter of seabed, and to perform processing characteristics of sonar signal using wavelet transform. Side scan sonar data are processed through the geometric correction to establish the actual position in the image pixel. The location of research study is Benoa Port, Bali Indonesia. The sonar surveys consist of several track lines survey with operating frequency of 325 kHz. The seabed texture consists of gravel with backscatter value range from 13824 mV to 23680 mV and 8832 mV to 13312 mV for sand, sediment ripples of 17792 mV to 32640 mV, dredging seabed of 8000 mV to 19330 mV, texture of mound area has 32640 mV, and rocky outcrop has 14845 mV to 23552 mV. The results analysis of the signal characteristics using wavelet transform generally defines the location of peaks and valleys of the backscatter amplitude for each texture. The peak magnitude of each texture in red color indicates the intensity of the seabed texture is more rough, complex and solid, while the seabed texture is relatively flat and soft physic material has a low magnitude the value in blue color.
