Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the Sowan tradition on Makeang Island, South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. This tradition is often practiced during Ramadan and aims to help children get used to fasting from an early age. The study will address two questions, the first being: what is the form of the Sowan tradition practiced by the Makeang Luar people? This question also serves as a prophetic effort to counter the current trend in local cultures, which is the gradual decline leading to extinction. A comprehensive description of this tradition not only illustrates how its processes and characteristics are carried out but also serves as a means of documentation that can be preserved as the collective memory of the Makeang Luar community. Additionally, it examines how the Makeang Luar people utilize the wisdom inherent in this tradition to educate children's character from an early age. The research employed a qualitative method using an analytical descriptive approach. This approach was selected because it involved participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews. Utilizing this methodology allowed the study to gather qualitative data, which was systematically presented based on the facts collected from the field. The findings illustrated how the tradition was practiced, the materials required, and the various meanings and wisdom embedded within it. In terms of meaning, the tradition encompasses several connotations, including resilience, integrity, and maturity. Additionally, regarding local wisdom, the Sowan tradition plays a significant role in shaping children's character from an early age. This character is reflected in their obedience in performing religious duties.

Abstract

Oral traditions, as an integral part of a society's belief system, not only serve as a guide for society in daily life, such as interactions between members of society and other people, and even with nature or the environment, but they also serve as recorders of history and culture, including natural events. This paper aims to describe the oral traditions of Ternate to identify potential natural disasters that hit Ternate City in particular and North Maluku in general. Therefore, the author uses the theory of myth function to embody the main research problem. The approach used in this paper is semiotics, especially in interpreting natural disasters that occurred in the past through codes contained in oral stories or legends. The research results show that the people of Ternate can only explain a few natural events in the past. Then, it is ontologically digested into myth to symbolise the cosmic-mystical realm of thought. Apart from that, the results of this reflection are related to cause-and-effect events, give rise to rules of behaviour, and become local intellectual ideals. However, records of natural phenomena or past events in myths or legends can, in theory, be linked to the truth and thus make cycles of disaster predictable. On the other hand, in a formal educational setting, this legend can be used to teach about mitigation. Legends about the mysterious origins of certain lakes are thought to include aspects of disaster or mitigation in Ternate.

Abstract

Greetings in different languages around the world reflect unique kinship dynamics within both nuclear and extended families. The Watam, also known as Marangis, a variant of the Ramu spoken by approximately 590 native speakers (Lewis, 2009: 623) in Papua New Guinea, employs two distinct kinship vocabularies in two sets of reciprocal relations to articulate greetings between aunt and nephew (namong~namkwae), uncle and niece (amuk~akwae), and uncle and nephew (aem~namong) (Foley, 2009:131--149). Building upon the insights discovered from the kinship greeting system in the Watam, the study of the Taba (Bowden, 2001), also referred to as East Makian (Lewis, 2009) spoken in North Maluku was investigated. The objective is to identify and elucidate the greeting lexicon in the Taba that signifies kinship relations. Employing a qualitative methodology (Miles and Huberman, 1992), the data collection techniques encompassed interviews, expert consultations, and recordings (Sudaryanto, 1993). Data analysis and interpretation drew upon two complementary theoretical frameworks: anthropological theories of kinship (Foley, 2009) and morphological theories (Nida, 1949). Findings reveal that the Taba encompasses six distinct kinship greetings related to marital relations. These greetings denote coexistential relations between parents and children, spouses, siblings, uncles and nephews, aunts and nephews, and grandparents and grandchildren. Each of these relations is characterized by the utilization of six unique morphemes: ko, doma, mota, hoh, mom, and bum. Additionally, the repertoire of coexistential relational greetings can be expanded through the incorporation of relevant unique morphemes. Collectively, these six greetings delineate relationships within both the nuclear and extended family spheres.

Abstract

A noun phrase (NP) is a syntactic category that plays an important role in forming a sentence, along with a verb phrase. The form required at least one noun as the head, and may be accompanied by  pre- and post-modifiers. This study aims to examine whether NP structures continue to play a vital role in shaping meaning in emerging forms of communication. This study was carried out in three stages: data collection, data analysis, and presentation of results.  The data were collected through observation, while the basic technique employed was tapping. The data used is the 10 most popular USS Feed Instagram post captions during April.  In the data analysis, the data were classified into NP’s categorisation based on (Quirk, Randolph; Greenbaum, Sidney; Leech, Geoffrey; Svartvik, 1985). The data were then presented both formally and informally. The result shows that out of 10 Instagram captions, a total of 310 NPs were identified, 193 basic NPs, and 117 complex NPs. The basic NPs appear in the form of a noun and its premodifier (s), while a post-modifier or both pre-modifiers and post-modifiers may accompany the complex NPs. The complex NP can sometimes be confusing because it includes too much information within one structure.
