Abstract

Kegiatan pengembangan profesionalisme guru menjadi kegiatan wajib bagi semua guru untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mereka secara berkala. Kegiatan yang diadakan secara daring dan berupa rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan sejawat belum banyak dilaksanakan. Kegiatan pelatihan yang biasanya hanya sekali dilakukan tanpa kegiatan lanjutan hanya meningkatkan pengetahuan guru, tetapi tidak memberi mereka kesempatan untuk mengimplementasikan pengetahuan baru ini di kelas mereka masing-masing. Kegiatan pengembangan profesionalisme guru yang dilaksanakan sebagai kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat selama lebih kurang satu bulan ini berpotensi untuk membantu guru merefleksi dan berkolaborasi dengan guru sejawat mereka di sekolah yang sama sehingga mereka dapat lebih percaya diri dalam mengimplementasikan pengetahuan baru mereka. Kendala teknis maupun kurangnya komitmen guru untuk mengikuti kegiatan ini secara utuh terjadi dalam program ini. Dampak nyata dari rangkaian kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan ini belum dapat dirasakan dalam jangka pendek, akan tetapi dengan dibukanya peluang untuk para guru membentuk komunitas belajar diantara sejawat mereka, diharapkan mereka dapat saling memberikan dukungan baik secara pengalaman maupun emosi. Kata kunci—Pendampingan sejawat, Pengembangan profesionalisme guru, Guru Bahasa Inggris SMP Abstract  Teacher professional development activities are mandatory activities for all teachers to improve their knowledge and skills regularly. Activities held online and in a series of training activities, and peer coaching have not been widely implemented. Training activities usually carried out only once without follow-up activities only increase teachers' knowledge but do not allow them to implement the newly acquired knowledge in their language classes. The reported teacher professional development program, carried out as a community service activity for approximately one month, can help teachers reflect on their teaching and collaborate with their peer teachers at the same school so that they can be more confident in implementing new knowledge. Technical obstacles and lack of commitment of teachers to participate in this activity as a whole occurred in this program. The real impact of this series of training and coaching activities cannot be observed in the short term, but with the opening of opportunities for teachers to form learning communities in their own school and collaborate among their peers, it is hoped that they can provide mutual support both experientially and emotionally. Keywords— Peer coaching, Teacher professional development, Junior high school English teacher

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perception of senior high school students in Probolinggo toward the implementation of English online learning during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic according to their personalities. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a survey as the technique of gathering data. The study utilized online questionnaires on students’ perceptions and students’ personalities and involved 489 respondents from 7 state senior high schools in Probolinggo. The result indicated that the student’s responses were mostly positive toward English online learning. It reached 88% of the respondents who responded positively to the implementation of English online learning. It was found that the students with extroverted personalities contributed more positive responses compared to the introverted students. The positive responses from the extrovert students gained 88% while 79% were the positive response from the introverted personality students.

Abstract

Abstract: The use of technology in language learning has improved the development of educational products. Related to reading, it makes reading materials is not limited to printed-text only. The Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) makes smartphones have big impact on education since it can be used as a device to access variety of technology-based learning materials. In such a way, the development of learning materials that can be accessed from a smartphone is highly needed. Thus, the need for accessible learning materials from a smartphone is crucial to students, especially during the situation where online learning must be carried out. Since students must do distance learning with teachers, smartphone application can be an additional material that can accommodate students to learn independently. The current study is conducted to develop a smartphone application prototype to support the benefit of technology to the practice of English Language Teaching in Indonesia. The R&D model of Borg & Gall (2003) was used to develop this digital supplementary reading material in the form of a smartphone application prototype. The first final product of this study is a smartphone application named ‘Seeds’ that has implemented the three-phase reading technique. Besides, it consists of three different titles of descriptive text added with different forms of reading activities. The product is also supported with additional features like pop-up glossary, re-reading, show-score, and share-score. The second product is the e-manual book in the form of .pdf where it is written in English and Indonesian. Berkaitan dengan kemampuan membaca, hal tersebut membuat bahan bacaan tidak terbatas pada teks dalam bentuk fisik saja. Mobile-assisted Language Learning (MALL) menjadikan smartphone memiliki pengaruh yang besar pada pendidikan karena kemampuannya dalam mengakses berbagai macam bahan ajar berbasis teknologi. Hal tersebut menyebabkan pengembangan materi pembelajaran yang dapat diakses menggunakan gawai menjadi sangat dibutuhkan. Oleh karena itu, kebutuhan akan materi pembelajaran yang dapat diakses menggunakan gawai menjadi sangat penting bagi siswa. Terutama selama pembelajaran online sedang diberlakukan. Semenjak siswa diharuskan untuk melakukan pembelajaran jarak jauh, aplikasi gawai dapat dijadikan sebagai materi tambahan yang dapat memfasilitasi siswa untuk belajar secara independen. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengembangkan suatu prototype aplikasi gawai untuk mendukung manfaat teknologi pada kegiatan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia. Model penelitian R&D oleh Borg & Gall (2003) diterapkan dalam pengembangan materi tambahan membaca dalam bentuk prototype aplikasi gawai. Produk hasil penelitian yang pertama adalah aplikasi gawai bernama 'Seeds' yang telah menerapkan teknik membaca tiga fase. Selain itu, aplikasi yang dikembangkan berisi tiga judul teks deskriptif dengan berbagai bentuk kegiatan membaca. Produk tersebut juga didukung dengan fitur tambahan seperti pop-up glosarium, re-reading, show-score, dan share-score. Produk kedua adalah e-manual book dalam bentuk .pdf yang ditulis dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia. Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at (1) finding out whether the EFL students taught using Google docs show better writing ability than those taught without using Google docs, (2) discovering if there is a significant difference in writing ability between the introverted students and extroverted students taught using Google docs. This research involved two intact classes of ten graders in SMA Kristen Charis Malang consisting of 29 and 28 students respectively that were randomly selected to be the experimental and control group.  The experimental group worked collaboratively outside the class using Google docs whereas the control group worked in the face-to-face class. Both groups were assigned to compose an expository essay based on the topics given in the pre-test and post-test to reveal their writing achievement before and after the treatment. The results showed that the mean score of experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. When it comes to personality learning styles, there was no significant difference in the mean scores obtained by the extroverted students and introverted students.Keywords: google docs, writing ability, expository essay, personality, learning styles

Abstract

Writing is one of the fundamental English skills that students must master, yet it is also one of the most challenging. Students often struggle to express their ideas in written form and are unsure of what to write. To write effectively, students need a clear idea or inspiration, and one way to generate ideas is through pictures. Pictures can help center students' attention on the content, providing visual stimuli that inspire imagination and creativity. Specifically, pictures on Instagram can serve as valuable tools for students, allowing them to focus their attention and build their ideas. This research explores the use of Instagram as a tool for teaching report text writing in senior high school. The subjects were tenth-grade students of SMAN 4 Malang. The researcher employed a descriptive qualitative method, documenting the teaching and learning process and gathering students' responses through questionnaires. The results indicated that teaching report text writing using Instagram involved six steps: introducing the concept and purpose of report text writing, selecting appropriate pictures on Instagram, discussing and analyzing the pictures to generate ideas, guiding students in organizing their ideas, having students write their report texts, and reviewing and providing feedback. An impressive 85.7 percent of students agreed that Instagram should be used as a tool for learning writing. This structured approach made the writing process more engaging and interactive, significantly enhancing students' ability to generate and organize ideas, ultimately improving their writing skills. The positive response from the majority of students highlights the effectiveness and potential of using social media platforms like Instagram as innovative tools in educational settings.

Abstract

Tinjauan sistematis ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kemampuan pemahaman bahasa kedua anak. Pemerolehan bahasa kedua pada anak merupakan proses kompleks yang dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor. Memahami faktor-faktor ini dapat memberikan wawasan berharga bagi pendidik, orang tua, dan pembuat kebijakan untuk mengoptimalkan strategi dan intervensi pembelajaran bahasa. Tinjauan ini mengikuti pendekatan sistematis dengan melakukan pencarian komprehensif di berbagai database, termasuk sumber pendidikan, psikologis, dan linguistik. Penelitian relevan yang diterbitkan dalam dekade terakhir dimasukkan dalam analisis. Tinjauan ini berfokus pada anak-anak berusia 5 hingga 12 tahun, karena ini adalah periode penting untuk perkembangan dan perolehan bahasa. Dengan menggabungkan penelitian-penelitian sebelumnya sebagai evaluasi literatur yang lebih menyeluruh, penelitian ini menggunakan metode tinjauan literatur sistematis (SLR) untuk menjawab permasalahan penelitian. Temuan ini mengungkapkan beberapa faktor kunci yang mempengaruhi kemampuan pemahaman bahasa kedua pada anak-anak. Pertama, faktor kognitif individu, seperti kapasitas memori kerja, perhatian, dan fungsi eksekutif, memainkan peran penting dalam pemrosesan dan pemahaman bahasa. Kedua, faktor sosial budaya, termasuk keterlibatan orang tua, status sosial ekonomi, dan paparan bahasa kedua di masyarakat, mempengaruhi hasil pembelajaran bahasa. Ketiga, faktor pengajaran, seperti kualitas metode pengajaran, desain kurikulum, dan lingkungan kelas, mempunyai dampak besar terhadap kemampuan pemahaman bahasa anak. Berdasarkan temuan-temuan tersebut, tinjauan ini menggarisbawahi perlunya pendekatan komprehensif dan holistik untuk meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman bahasa kedua pada anak-anak. Ini menekankan pentingnya mengintegrasikan faktor kognitif, sosial budaya, dan pembelajaran dalam program pembelajaran bahasa. Selain itu, tinjauan ini juga mengidentifikasi kesenjangan penelitian dan memberikan rekomendasi untuk penelitian di masa depan guna lebih meningkatkan pemahaman kita tentang penguasaan bahasa kedua pada anak-anak.

Abstract

Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programs have emerged as the latest trend in EFL writing classes. AWE programs act as a supplementary to teacher feedback and offer automated suggestions and corrections to students' linguistic errors such as grammar, vocabulary, or mechanics. As there is a need for better recognition of different AWE brands utilized for different levels of students, this research sheds light on identifying six university students’ views of an AWE program, namely ProWritingAid (PWA). The six students are categorized as having high or low writing achievement. This descriptive study delineates the students’ perceptions qualitatively. A semi-structured interview was used to collect the data. The findings suggest the students’ positive views of PWA because it could make class time more effective; it had useful feedback on grammar, vocabulary choices, and mechanics; and it built students‘ self-confidence over their compositions. In addition, for different reasons, the students engaged differently with PWA to enhance their drafts, e.g. using PWA only for the first drafts or for the first and final drafts. Finally, despite of the students’ constructive views on PWA, there was a risk that students only engaged superficially with the program by hitting the correction directly.

Abstract

The current study is designed to investigate vocabulary teaching strategies/activities employed by teachers in Islamic senior high schools by referring to the principle of the Four Strands proposed by Nation (2007). A survey research design was used in line with the study's goal. English teachers who teach in Islamic senior high schools or Madrasah Aliyah, both public and private schools in West Sumatera, were the study's target demographic. The questionnaire and interviews collected the information required to respond to the survey's question. The finding reveals that teachers employ four kinds of strategies/activities following the Four Strands by Nation (2007) in teaching vocabulary to students. The findings of the study suggest that this study might give an insight that more strategies/activities need to be done by teachers to enhance vocabulary learning. The findings of the study provide some implications for future practice in teaching-learning process of teaching vocabulary. In reference to the findings, the recommendations are addressed to EFL teachers and future researchers. Some implications of the study are also discussed.

Abstract

The use of ICT in language testing has recently expanded to more diverse computer-based exams. This includes achievement test like UNBK (Ujian Nasional Berbasis Komputer) and university entrance test such as SBMPTN (Seleksi Nasional Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri). thus, students need to get used to using this kind of test before taking a competency exam. The method employed in this study is Research and Development (R&D). Based on the process and results of the development of this English Computer Based Test, it has many features that can cover the difficulties in conducting online tests such as timers, anti-cheating, and other features that are always a challenge in online tests. Some features are not working normally like audio and also some bugs in the product. Furthermore, these products can provide insight into the effectiveness of online tests and can be adjusted to the needs of test makers.

Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions about online listening classes utilizing the Revised Community of Inquiry (RCoI) framework. Their perceptions were viewed in relation to gender and the learning system used in online listening classes. This survey involved 97 undergraduate EFL Department English students at a state University in Malang. The data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 33 statements with four scales on the Likert scale. The finding showed that the students positively perceived four presences in RCoI. The analysis also reported that male and female students perceived differently among the presences in RCoI. Moreover, Zoom is the most frequently used in online listening classes. Lastly, some recommendations were also made in this study.
