Abstract

Rubber plants are an important plantation commodity as a source of non-oil and gas foreign exchange for Indonesia so they have a bright future. Propagation of rubber plants by grafting depends on the quality of the rootstock, and the graft as well as the grafter. The rootstock for rubber seedlings comes from seeds classified as recalcitrant. They have high moisture content, short shelf life, quickly loose their ability to germinate, and their cells freeze if stored at temperatures below 0oC. This study aimed to extend the shelf life of rubber seeds using a wax coating technique. The study was carried out for 2 months at the Unand campus III laboratory. A completely randomized divided plot design consisting of two factors, namely application of wax layer and shelf life was used. Application of wax slowed rubber seed germination. Various explanations are possible for this observation. One is that the ratio of wax/water in the suspension used to apply the wax layer was not appropriate. The longer the seeds were stored the lower the percentage germination observed. Therefore, further research should be conducted using less than 50% wax in the suspension use to coat the seeds.

Abstract

West Sumatra, one of the provinces in Indonesia, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful natural landscapes. Additionally, its agricultural sector significantly contributes to the region's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), including in Solok Selatan Regency, which boasts the Seribu Rumah Gadang area as its tourism icon. Solok Selatan Regency is also home to Lake Bontak, the only lake in the region, located within the conservation area of Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), one of the gateways for climbing Mount Kerinci. The Independent Conservation Group (KKM) Bangun Rejo has been managing agro-ecotourism by establishing a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and farmer groups. These groups engage in integrated farming, agriculture, and livestock businesses with nature tourism at Lake Bontak. The empowerment of these community groups aims to develop sustainable agro-ecotourism in Solok Selatan Regency. One method used is Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to identify the potential for agro-ecotourism development at Lake Bontak. The outcomes of these activities include the agro-edutourism development concept, the creation of social media accounts for promotion, and the cleaning and installation of tracking paths and tourist activity guides in the Lake Bontak area. Additionally, there is an emphasis on educating the community about conducting tourism activities that prioritize biodiversity conservation within the conservation area to support ongoing environmental knowledge around Lake Bontak. It is hoped that this area will attract both local and international tourists, particularly students and researchers interested in exploring the flora and fauna potential through the agro-edutourism concept.

Abstract

Organic rice farming is one of the crucial strategies to ensure food security in West Sumatra. However, the development of organic rice farming in West Sumatra has not progressed significantly. Only a few farmer groups apply for organic re-certification from the Organic Certification Institute. This study aims to analyze the institutional structure of farmer groups that have successfully maintained organic rice farming systems by examining farmer characteristics, group norms and rules, and social and cultural factors that influence the sustainability of organic rice farming systems. The study was conducted in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. Three farmer groups were selected based on their current status of organic rice certification. This study used a multidimensional approach encompassing social, cultural, and economic aspects to assess the sustainability of organic rice farming. Data collection was carried out through a focus group discussion. The result showed that, though farmers' groups are certified, only a few members are implementing an organic rice farming system. However, they are still involved in making compost, natural pesticides, weeding and harvesting. This finding indicates that the main strength of these groups lies in bottom-up institutionalization and internal belief in organic values. Abstract

Low cocoa productivity in Dharmasraya Regency, reaching only 549.94 kg/ha , is closely related to limited farmer knowledge regarding standard canopy management. This community service activity aims to optimize canopy architecture and improve the garden's microclimate through pruning technology transfer for farmers in Nagari Sitiung. The activity was implemented using module-assisted counseling and field training by creating demonstration plots (demplot) for Immature Plants and Mature Plants. The results showed an increase in the technical understanding and skills of the partner farmer groups regarding four main types of pruning: shape, maintenance, production, and restoration pruning. Through proper canopy management, the Leaf Area Index (LAI) value can be optimized and garden humidity can be controlled to reduce the risk of pest and disease attacks. It can be concluded that this technology transfer has succeeded in improving farmers' competence in managing cocoa plant canopy architecture as an effort to increase productivity sustainably. As a follow-up, it is recommended to provide continuous assistance regarding side-grafting techniques to rehabilitate unproductive plants.

Abstract

This study presents a systematic literature review of scholarly research examining tourism development challenges in Indonesia from 2010 to 2025, based on publications indexed in ScienceDirect. Literature identification and selection were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA framework, while bibliometric mapping and thematic analysis were performed using Visualization of Similarities (VOS). The initial literature search was carried out in ScienceDirect using the keyword string “tourism AND problems in Indonesia”. A multi-stage screening and eligibility process followed this. The selected articles were organized using Mendeley Desktop and subsequently subjected to manual verification to ensure data validity, thematic relevance, and consistency with the research objectives. Only studies that met the predefined inclusion criteria were retained for further analysis. The validated dataset was then analyzed using VOSviewer to visualize thematic relationships and co-occurrence patterns among the main research topics. The resulting VOS maps were manually interpreted by examining the most frequently occurring keywords and their relational structures. Based on this analysis, the study identifies major patterns and research gaps that provide directions for future investigations into tourism-related challenges in Indonesia. Overall, the tourism issues identified in the literature were systematically classified into three primary dimensions: environmental, social, and economic issues.

Abstract

Rice is a primary necessity for the Indonesian people, as it serves as a source of energy and carbohydrates. Rice cultivation requires strategic approaches to increase production, aiming to prevent threats to Indonesia's food security. One strategy that can be applied is the jajar legowo rice planting system. The jajar legowo system is a technique that manipulates planting distances to increase rice yields, resulting in a greater number of edge plants. This activity aims to enhance farmers' understanding of rice cultivation using the jajar legowo system to achieve better harvests and to boost their enthusiasm in working on their agricultural land. The activity was conducted on the rice fields owned by the Tanjung Raya farming group, located in Nagari Sungai Dareh, Pulau Punjung District, Dharmasraya Regency. The method employed involved directly practising the jajar legowo rice planting system in the farmers' rice fields. The activity proceeded smoothly, successfully increasing the farmers' understanding of *jajar legowo* rice cultivation to achieve better harvests. Both the farmers and students involved in the activity were able to perform their tasks according to the specified guidance. Looking forward, it is hoped that similar activities will be held, as this initiative by the students of Campus III Universitas Andalas Dharmasraya aims to provide benefits and positive contributions to the surrounding community.
