Abstract

This study investigates the use of digital communication in academic settings, specifically focusing on WhatsApp group chats among English Education students at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (Unihaz), HIMABI 2024. The research analyzes the patterns of language use in chat messages, exploring the prevalence of informal language features such as abbreviations, emojis, and code-switching between Indonesian and English. The study also examines student perceptions regarding the impact of these language features on communication efficiency, clarity, and the overall academic atmosphere. The results reveal that informal language enhances engagement, fosters a supportive learning environment, and mitigates barriers to communication. However, the overuse of informal elements such as abbreviations and emojis can sometimes cause misunderstandings, particularly for students unfamiliar with these conventions. The study highlights the need for a balance between informality and academic rigor in digital communication. It concludes that while informal language serves an important role in student collaboration, educators should guide students in maintaining clarity and inclusivity in academic contexts

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the mastery of the simple present and present progressive tenses among second-semester Counseling Guidance students at Universitas Prof. Dr. Hazairin, SH, Bengkulu. The purpose of the study is to assess students ability to use these tenses correctly in both written and spoken forms. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of a grammar test to evaluate students' written proficiency and structured interviews to assess their spoken usage. The results revealed that while students showed relatively high proficiency in using the simple present tense, their performance with the present progressive tense was weaker. Common errors identified included confusion between the two tenses, omission of auxiliary verbs, and incorrect verb forms. These findings suggest that students have a solid grasp of the simple present tense but face difficulties with the present progressive tense, largely due to the absence of similar tense forms in their native language. The study concludes that targeted grammar instruction, particularly focused on the present progressive tense, is essential. It also recommends incorporating task-based learning and form-focused instruction to enhance grammatical accuracy. The findings offer valuable insights into tense acquisition among Indonesian EFL learners and have implications for improving English grammar teaching practices at the university level.

Therefore, the researchers conducted this study to find out how students perceive the use of note-taking strategies in listening process. This study was based on qualitative research. 24 students from an English Education department were selected to participate in this study. This study used questionnaires as a data collection technique. After data collection, the researchers conducted a descriptive analysis of the data following the process of reading or remembering, describing, and classifying. The results of this study indicate that students have a good awareness of using note-taking strategies in listening classroom. The students used note-taking strategies while listening to understand and remember each point of the information that was hear. It acts as a tool for developing working memory, focusing attention, and identifying important ideas within the information presented. The act of writing down information strengthens memory and helps students recall key details later. Students were focused on main points, paraphrase some ideas in their own words, and use symbols/color-coding to highlight important information in listening subject. Furthermore, using note-taking strategies in listening comprehension has many benefits, such as helping students retain information better, grasp key points, paraphrasing information, organizing notes with headings and lists, review previously learned material, and can improve students’ motivation, and increase students’ listening comprehension. As it is known that note taking can be a good strategy in learning due to its function and advantages in listening classroom.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of online media discourse on public opinion during the Bengkulu regional elections using a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The research focuses on the dominant narratives presented in online news and social media, highlighting themes such as economic development, political integrity, and candidates' personal character. Data were collected from multiple online platforms during the 2023 election campaign period, including major news websites and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The findings reveal that economic development narratives had the strongest impact on voter sentiment, with candidates emphasizing local growth receiving more positive responses. While concerns about political integrity were present, they did not significantly influence voter behavior. Personal character emerged as a crucial factor, particularly on social media, where voters engaged more with narratives of trust and relatability. This study contributes to understanding the role of media framing in regional elections, reinforcing previous research on the impact of localized issues on voter behavior. The findings offer practical insights for political communication strategies in regional contexts and highlight the need for media literacy to critically engage with media discourse.

Abstract

This study presents a narrative review of gender representation in language textbooks, examining how male and female characters are depicted across diverse educational and cultural contexts. The review aimed to identify patterns of underrepresentation, role stereotyping, and heteronormativity, as well as to explore how systemic factors shape textbook content. A systematic literature search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar using targeted keywords and Boolean combinations. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies from 2010 to 2025 that analyzed gender representation in language textbooks through content analysis, discourse analysis, or mixed methods. The findings reveal persistent gender imbalances, with men more frequently represented in professional and public domains, while women are marginalized or confined to domestic roles. Cross-national comparisons demonstrate that such disparities are more pronounced in developing countries but also persist globally, including in contexts with progressive policies. Furthermore, heteronormativity remains dominant, with LGBTQ+ identities largely absent from textbook narratives. These outcomes underscore the gap between policy commitments to gender equity and entrenched cultural, political, and religious influences in education. Addressing these challenges requires curricular reforms, stronger enforcement of gender-sensitive guidelines, and teacher training to critically engage with biased materials. Future research should broaden geographic scope, adopt intersectional perspectives, and investigate digital learning environments. By highlighting both persistent inequities and potential avenues for reform, this review emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable textbooks in shaping learners’ identities and opportunities.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines students' views on the use of Basic Reading Comprehension materials developed with the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and a multicultural-based approach. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of PBL with a multicultural approach to improve students' reading comprehension, motivation, and learning engagement in a diverse educational environment. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach involving 300 Indonesian students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires, then analyzed thematically to produce the effectiveness of this approach. Results: Students felt more motivated and active in discussions when the material combined problem-solving tasks and culturally relevant content. PBL improved the ability to understand texts through critical thinking and collaboration, while the multicultural approach helped students integrate the material with their cultural background, thus encouraging inclusivity and awareness of diversity. Challenges found include the need for more assistance for students who are not familiar with PBL. Conclusion: The integration of PBL with multicultural-based materials can significantly improve reading learning by making it more interactive, inclusive, and meaningful. It is recommended to provide additional support for diverse learners and develop more culturally responsive teaching materials.
