Abstract

Trees always appear as green building in a city, it growth side by side with various types of soild infrastructures and often ended with a conflict. Many cities in Indonesia experience the conflicts, especially between road and trees, which resulting risks to public and high restoration cost, but this urban green dynamic has not scientifically explored yet. We initiates a study on the dynamics of tree conflicts with road infrastructure in Padang City, a representative city in Indonesia with numerous conflict events. Species of tree, diameter, and distance to infrastructure were measured along 1.5 km of secondary and 1.5 km of primary road. There were 524 trees belong to nine species were found along 3 km road, and 35% of the trees were conflicted with the infrastructure. Primary road was dominated by small trees and was only causing 11% conflicts, while secondary road was dominated by large trees and 71% were conflicted. Number of conflict led by Pterocarpus indicus on both road types, while Swietenia mahogani was only conflicted with secondary road infrastructure and Dialium indum was only conflicted at primary road. Conflict of P. indicus at primary road was found at all diameter levels but at the secondary road the conflict was mostly associated to large trees. We also found many trees without conflict at all levels of diameter on both road types. Conflict of trees occurred at various distance to infrastructure and this found on both small and large trees. This study highlight that conflict between trees and infrastructure differed among species, size of tree diameter and conflict will always occurred when trees planted less than 2 m to infrastructure.

Abstract

West Sumatra, one of the provinces in Indonesia, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful natural landscapes. Additionally, its agricultural sector significantly contributes to the region's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), including in Solok Selatan Regency, which boasts the Seribu Rumah Gadang area as its tourism icon. Solok Selatan Regency is also home to Lake Bontak, the only lake in the region, located within the conservation area of Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), one of the gateways for climbing Mount Kerinci. The Independent Conservation Group (KKM) Bangun Rejo has been managing agro-ecotourism by establishing a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and farmer groups. These groups engage in integrated farming, agriculture, and livestock businesses with nature tourism at Lake Bontak. The empowerment of these community groups aims to develop sustainable agro-ecotourism in Solok Selatan Regency. One method used is Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to identify the potential for agro-ecotourism development at Lake Bontak. The outcomes of these activities include the agro-edutourism development concept, the creation of social media accounts for promotion, and the cleaning and installation of tracking paths and tourist activity guides in the Lake Bontak area. Additionally, there is an emphasis on educating the community about conducting tourism activities that prioritize biodiversity conservation within the conservation area to support ongoing environmental knowledge around Lake Bontak. It is hoped that this area will attract both local and international tourists, particularly students and researchers interested in exploring the flora and fauna potential through the agro-edutourism concept.

Abstract

Sungai Masang Kecil is located in the middle of the PT Andalas Agro Industri (PT AAI) palm oil plantation and mill. This activity will have an impact on aquatic biota, especially benthos. Benthos occupies an important position in the food chain and lives permanently on the substrate to be used as a bioindicator of pollution. This study aimed to determine the Community Structure of Macrozoobenthos and the indicator species of water pollution in the Masang Kecil River around the PT AAI area, West Pasaman Regency. This research was conducted using a purposive sampling method with three sampling points, namely upstream and two downstream points after the Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and after the confluence of tributaries. Sampling using Surber net size 30 x 30 cm. The results of identifying the types of Bento's organisms as a whole identified as many as 45 species. Most species are found in Class Insecta. Based on the diversity index, the water quality in PT AAI's river basin was classified as unpolluted, and it could be concluded that the benthic condition was in good condition on a scale of 4. In the current study, the Diptera order as an indicator of polluted water was most commonly found among orders from other insect classes, namely, ten species. However, there were nine species from the Order Ephemeroptera as an indicator of clean waters and six species for Trichoptera.

Abstract

The palm oil industry is the largest economic supporter for the Indonesian economy from the agricultural sector. Behind the success story of this activity, there are environmental consequences regarding the decline in land quality as a result of improper land management. To study the effect of oil palm plantation management on soil fertility, a study was conducted in three locations, Dharmasraya Regency (Kanhapludult), South Solok (Dystrudepts) and South Coast (Haplohemists) in West Sumatra. Research data were collected from 2017 to 2022 respectively, and analyzed. The results showed that soils from Dharmasraya (DM) and South Solok (SS) experienced a decrease in pH value during the study period, while opposite results were found at the PS location. Total Carbon (C) and Nitrogen (N) content at the DM and SS locations were found to be similar, while at the PS location these parameters were much higher because the soil came from organic matter. Comparable results were also found for KTK, where the DM and SS research locations were lower compared to the PS location. The content of macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) in the soil describes the PS location much better compared to DM and SS. Because the PS location is organic soil, the higher nutrient content can be harmful to the environment because it can easily leak into water bodies which can trigger eutrophication

Abstract

The development of ecotourism in Kapalo Banda, Limau Manis, Padang, has potential to be expanded into agro-ecotourism through multi-stakeholder involvement. Key attractions include the scenic of river flows, agricultural cultivation, and stingless bee keeping, which support environmental sustainability and the local economy. With high vegetation diversity, the potential for stingless bee (galo-galo) breeding as a creative economic initiative offers new opportunities. This program aligns with the West Sumatra Provincial Government’s efforts to establish the area as a honey production center. However, challenges such as low colony production due to limited knowledge of farming techniques and the availability of flowering feed hinder its development. Through community engagement, empowerment activities were conducted from June to September 2024, including socialization, demonstrations, and training in bee farming techniques, supported by expert teams. Education focused on the potential of galo-galo and marketing strategies for local products. The results of this program indicate improved community skills and knowledge, supporting local economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation. Kapalo Banda partners have the potential to serve as a model for community empowerment based on natural resources, effectively enhancing community welfare. Multi-stakeholder involvement in developing Kapalo Banda Ecotourism has resulted in a series of activities ranging from cultivation preparation, colony propagation techniques, harvest preparation, to downstream processing and product marketing.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration in relation to the catch results of mackerel fish (Rastrelliger kanagurta) in Pulau Tikus Beach, Bengkulu City. Remote sensing data from the Aqua MODIS satellite sensor were analyzed over a 12-month period (May-April 2025) to assess monthly fluctuations in SST and chlorophyll-a as indicators of marine productivity. SST values ranged from 28.9°C to 31.2°C, matching the optimal thermal range for mackerel spawning. Chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 3.4 mg/m³, indicating a high abundance of phytoplankton and biologically fertile waters. Fishing coordinate data showed that the highest mackerel catches occurred around Pulau Tikus, with Robin-type boats operating approximately 7-8 nautical miles offshore. The relationship between SST and chlorophyll-a revealed that increasing SST was associated with elevated chlorophyll-a levels at depths of 8-15 meters, thereby increasing the probability of mackerel presence.

Abstract

Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) is a pelagic and neritic fish resource that has economic value. Fish diet is one of the important information in monitoring the sustainability of fisheries resources in the future. This study aims to determine the composition of food and determine the Index of Preponderance of frigate tuna caught by fishermen in West Sumatra waters. The method used in this study was random sampling by taking 98 samples of frigate tuna obtained from the catch of fishermen in West Sumatra waters landed at the Air Bangis Fish Landing Center, West Pasaman Regency, and Gaung Fish Auction Site, Padang. The analysis used the Index of Preponderance to determine the main food, additional food, and complementary food. The results showed the composition of food in the stomach of frigate tuna consisted of 3 groups of organisms, namely zooplankton (61.04%), phytoplankton (31.82%), and pisces (7.13%). The main food of frigate tuna is zooplankton (62.10%), while the additional food are phytoplankton (27.73%), and pisces (10.16%). The availability of frigate tuna food in West Sumatra waters supports the sustainability of the frigate tuna population in these waters.
