Abstract

Abstract

Essential Ecosystem Area (EEA) Belibis Island is located in Solok Regency, West Sumatra Province which renown as the habitat for significant population of Whistling Ducks Dendrocygna javanica (vernacular name: Belibis). In line with the development of tourism sector in this area, through site clearing, the building of recreational facilities and human establishment, seem to have neglected the ecological aspect during the process. The idea to recover the typical characteristic of this area as habitat for the whistling ducks has been recently stated by the Municipal Authority of Solok City. Recalling that this area has been severely impacted by human, hence comprehending its socio-ecological aspects becomes essential to support the development of an environmental-friendly ecotourism activity herein. Therefore, a socio-ecological survey was then conducted to understand the perception and knowledge of local community toward the biodiversity in Belibis Island, especially in its relation to the tourism activity. Eighteen respondents, consisted of visitors and local people, were inquired using socio-ecological questionnaire, which later descriptively analyzed. The result showed that most of the respondents satisfied with the current condition of Belibis Island, with emphasis for further improvement on the management system. There was indication of people willingness to participate in maintaining the environmental condition. Lot of respondents possess knowledge regarding wild plants and animals in Belibis Island, even before the establishment of tourism site in that area; however, the existence of these wildlife not what attracted them to come. These findings indicate the needs to further improve natural biodiversity in Belibis Island as focal point for ecotourism destination. It can be achieved, presumably, through isolating some parts of the area from human interference to help the thriving of natural wildlife, constructing nature-basesd aviary to introduce the whistling ducks or other wild birds, as well as deploying any other way.

Abstract

Trees always appear as green building in a city, it growth side by side with various types of soild infrastructures and often ended with a conflict. Many cities in Indonesia experience the conflicts, especially between road and trees, which resulting risks to public and high restoration cost, but this urban green dynamic has not scientifically explored yet. We initiates a study on the dynamics of tree conflicts with road infrastructure in Padang City, a representative city in Indonesia with numerous conflict events. Species of tree, diameter, and distance to infrastructure were measured along 1.5 km of secondary and 1.5 km of primary road. There were 524 trees belong to nine species were found along 3 km road, and 35% of the trees were conflicted with the infrastructure. Primary road was dominated by small trees and was only causing 11% conflicts, while secondary road was dominated by large trees and 71% were conflicted. Number of conflict led by Pterocarpus indicus on both road types, while Swietenia mahogani was only conflicted with secondary road infrastructure and Dialium indum was only conflicted at primary road. Conflict of P. indicus at primary road was found at all diameter levels but at the secondary road the conflict was mostly associated to large trees. We also found many trees without conflict at all levels of diameter on both road types. Conflict of trees occurred at various distance to infrastructure and this found on both small and large trees. This study highlight that conflict between trees and infrastructure differed among species, size of tree diameter and conflict will always occurred when trees planted less than 2 m to infrastructure.

Abstract

West Sumatra, one of the provinces in Indonesia, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and beautiful natural landscapes. Additionally, its agricultural sector significantly contributes to the region's Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), including in Solok Selatan Regency, which boasts the Seribu Rumah Gadang area as its tourism icon. Solok Selatan Regency is also home to Lake Bontak, the only lake in the region, located within the conservation area of Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS), one of the gateways for climbing Mount Kerinci. The Independent Conservation Group (KKM) Bangun Rejo has been managing agro-ecotourism by establishing a Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and farmer groups. These groups engage in integrated farming, agriculture, and livestock businesses with nature tourism at Lake Bontak. The empowerment of these community groups aims to develop sustainable agro-ecotourism in Solok Selatan Regency. One method used is Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to identify the potential for agro-ecotourism development at Lake Bontak. The outcomes of these activities include the agro-edutourism development concept, the creation of social media accounts for promotion, and the cleaning and installation of tracking paths and tourist activity guides in the Lake Bontak area. Additionally, there is an emphasis on educating the community about conducting tourism activities that prioritize biodiversity conservation within the conservation area to support ongoing environmental knowledge around Lake Bontak. It is hoped that this area will attract both local and international tourists, particularly students and researchers interested in exploring the flora and fauna potential through the agro-edutourism concept.

Abstract

Sungai Masang Kecil is located in the middle of the PT Andalas Agro Industri (PT AAI) palm oil plantation and mill. This activity will have an impact on aquatic biota, especially benthos. Benthos occupies an important position in the food chain and lives permanently on the substrate to be used as a bioindicator of pollution. This study aimed to determine the Community Structure of Macrozoobenthos and the indicator species of water pollution in the Masang Kecil River around the PT AAI area, West Pasaman Regency. This research was conducted using a purposive sampling method with three sampling points, namely upstream and two downstream points after the Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and after the confluence of tributaries. Sampling using Surber net size 30 x 30 cm. The results of identifying the types of Bento's organisms as a whole identified as many as 45 species. Most species are found in Class Insecta. Based on the diversity index, the water quality in PT AAI's river basin was classified as unpolluted, and it could be concluded that the benthic condition was in good condition on a scale of 4. In the current study, the Diptera order as an indicator of polluted water was most commonly found among orders from other insect classes, namely, ten species. However, there were nine species from the Order Ephemeroptera as an indicator of clean waters and six species for Trichoptera.
