Abstract

Kimak, Tanah Bawah, and Silip are three villages in Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, Indonesia, where animals are still used for traditional medicine. This study aimed to collect, analyze, and evaluate data on the use of animals in traditional medicine by the communities of Kimak, Tanah Bawah, and Silip. The research was conducted over three months, from March to May 2024. Data collection involved surveys and informant selection using the snowball sampling method. Fifteen selected informants were interviewed based on a prepared questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively (using descriptive statistics) and quantitatively (calculating the Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) and Informant Consensus Factor (ICF)). The results showed a positive correlation between informants’ age and their knowledge of animal-based traditional medicine, with informants over 45 years old possessing broader knowledge due to their longer life experiences. Dependence on traditional medicine was influenced by limited access to modern healthcare services and the cultural and spiritual significance of these practices. A total of 14 animal species from five classes were used, with Mammalia being the most dominant class (35.7%). Malayopython reticulatus had the highest RFC value (0.667), while species with the lowest RFC values (0.067) included Nisaetus cirrhatus, Galeopterus variegatus, Trachypithecus cristatus, and Nesolagus netscheri. The most commonly used body part was meat. ICF analysis indicated that disease categories such as skin ailments, internal injuries, nerve disorders, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and mental illnesses had the highest levels of informant consensus. Several used species are classified as threatened, highlighting the need for stronger conservation efforts through collaboration between the government, conservation organizations, and local communities. Balancing conservation with traditional medicine practices is essential to preserving cultural heritage while supporting ecological sustainability.

Abstract

This study investigates the daily activity patterns and feeding behavior of captive ring-tailed lemurs Lemur catta housed at the Schmutzer Primate Center, Ragunan Zoo, Indonesia. Through systematic observation over two months, including Ad Libitum and Focal Animal Sampling methods, data were collected on three adult individuals (one female and two males). Results revealed a predominant time allocation to resting (72.6%), followed by grooming (9.81%), locomotion (8.20%), and feeding (8.15%). Feeding activity peaked in the morning and late afternoon, aligning with thermoregulatory behavior such as sunbathing. The lemurs displayed a preference for provisioned fruits and vegetables, with limited manipulation of food items, reflecting species-specific feeding traits. No occurrences of agonistic, sexual, or play behaviors were recorded during the observation period. These findings highlight the behavioral adaptations of L. catta in a semi-natural captive setting and provide essential insights for enhancing animal welfare, enrichment, and management practices in zoological institutions. Keywords: daily activity pattern, feeding behavior, Lemur catta, ring-tailed lemur, Schmutzer Primate.

Abstract

Former tin mining land (known locally as camoy or kulong) has the potential to be utilized as fish cultivation land. Kulong possesses potential for fish farming due to its age, which supports the availability of trophic minerals essential for fish life. Fish farmers frequently encounter problems with disease outbreaks and mortality caused by pathogens, leading to low production yields. Improving the quality of the cultivation environment, including reducing sedimentation from commercial feed, is one solution to mitigate fish diseases and mortality. This community service aims to provide training on environmentally friendly feed for fish farmers through training and mentoring in its application. The program successfully enhanced the partners' ability to produce cost-effective (organic) environmentally friendly feed from agricultural waste (oil palm kernel meal, dregs, bran), which demonstrably improved the quality of the cultivation environment, reduced fish diseases and mortality, and has the potential to increase the quality and quantity of fish production.
